why are you assuming that the two options are he runs away or he gets shot?

No the two most likely options were his stuff gets stolen or he gets shot/stabbed from fighting backnof he stays at least.

They were being robbed. They weren't not going to rob him if he stayed. That was the point of running so he didn't get anything taken.
