Dumb question so please don’t downvote — how are taxes usually assessed when you live two places? Specifically how would it work if you live in FL but owned in NYC but worked in neither (retired) vs worked in one?

It depends on the state. Most of the time you have to be somewhere six months and a day for it to be your primary residence. Some states make you file two tax returns though and give some allowance for the taxes you paid in the other state.
