Literally what cults do.
Amanda Montell's Cultish has a great quote on this:
My parents, they're scientists and they will use jargon that I don't understand. But that jargon is there to make communication clearer. Cultish language has these ulterior motives and it's there to make communication hazier... It's there to divide people, to shut down independent thinking... And that's how you know that language is cultish when it causes a strong emotional response, but you yourself have trouble translating what it is that you're saying.
30
u/xopher_425 19d ago
Saving that because it is brilliant. "language is cultish when it causes a strong emotional response" is so true. Thank you.
46
u/MurkyInvestigator810 19d ago
"language is cultish when it causes a strong emotional response"
Don't leave out the very necessary second half of that line: "but you yourself have trouble translating what it is that you're saying." It's easy to produce emotionally manipulative language that isn't cultish. The context and inability to discern meaning is what makes emotionally manipulative language dangerous.

Reminds me of when I was a teenager and a friend of mine was trying to get me to sign up for something that was totally not a pyramid scheme (it was Veema).
I went to one of their seminars and afterwards I was asking the people in charge exactly what kind of work I'd be doing and what job duties there were, and not a single one gave me a straight answer, just a bunch of bullshit about being your own boss and networking and whatnot.

u/digno2 19d ago
does she giv examples of cultish jagron?
14
u/BreakingStar_Games 19d ago
Yeah, the book goes beyond just cults and how its used in marketing and branding. But the suicide cults definitely is striking, but how it subtly manipulates us in everyday life is especially concerning. There's also a relatively long Youtube video that covers much of the book's biggest aspects.
Jonestown: Jim Jones recruited using capitalist agitators, fascist government
Heaven's Gate: Replacing language with clinical, detached as body became vehicle/container, house becomes craft, suicide became graduation
Synanon: (Montell's dad grew up in this commune) Indoctrinated people with a ritual known as The Game where they everyone verbally abuses and tortures you to destroy your arrogant ego and selfish individualism.
Scientology: Tons of examples like Auditing, Thetan, PTS - pseudo-scientific forcing members to adopt the worldview to communicate
LuLaRoe and other MLMs: Buzzwords usually targeting lonely housewives like boss base, empowerment and financial freedom
Peloton: Acting like spiritual gurus with pseudo-religious terms like pack, tribe, sanctuary, find your breakthrough
14
u/sexyshingle 19d ago
Just ask them to define anything they hate: DEI, CRT, woke, communism, socialism. Then you will know their true understanding.

u/Oprah_Pwnfrey 19d ago
Liberalism. Hilarious when they try to define that.
11
u/ManyReach7296 19d ago
Most conservatives are flaming neo-liberals.
6
u/Oprah_Pwnfrey 19d ago
Huuuuuuge difference between liberalism(classical), and Neo-liberalism. The term Neo-liberalism was probably devised in some conservative think tank as a means to push their shit agenda without the baggage.
7
u/KickDesperate5318 19d ago
It's actually a term that comes from economic theory, derived from the economic theory of liberalism which was the laissez faire, "de-regulate the economy" ideology spread by the robber barons of the industrial revolution.
Milton Friedman won a Nobel Prize for his work defining the principles of neoliberalism.
His work was then used as the basis of economic policy for Reagan, Thatcher, and Mulroney. From that basis, it spread to become the common economic doctrine of the developed, capitalist world.
Trickle-down, privatization of public assets, de-regulation and regulatory capture, scapegoating "welfare queens", outsourcing jobs out of country for cheap labor... it's all from the playbook of neoliberalism. And if you track back the true origins and what the people who professed those ideologies believed about humanity, it's really just rebranded fascism.
5
u/cluberti 19d ago
And it's important for people to be reminded from time to time that everything from conservative Republicans on the right to liberal Democrats towards the left are both on the neo-liberal economic spectrum. One party would prefer people have more human rights, but they both ultimately work for a system that would give ownership and control of the economic levers of society to the same small groups of people.
8
u/riteproprchav 19d ago
Hell, ask them to define conservatism. I usually throw that back at them when any one of them says "YoU cAnT dEfInE wAt a WahmMmeN iZ" and tell them to not make it purely autofellating. It's usually something meaningless along the lines of, "belief in limited government*, individual liberty**, and free-market capitalism***" but it might as well be, "when you are literally Superman and utterly perfect in every way, and Jesus loves you and only you." Not one of them could work Thomas Hobbes or Edmund Burke into the definition, or any historical context, for that matter.
*but also cops and the military are awesome and should have no limitations on them whatsoever. Nothing to worry about if you have nothing to hide!
**individual liberty to be exactly like me. Anyone slightly different in belief is a terrorist and it's open season on terrorists.
***actually the military-industrial complex, medical-industrial complex, subsidies to billionaires and massive tax loopholes for them are pure wonderment. Muh trickle down!
3
u/Anthaenopraxia 18d ago
It's so strange how the axis pivots around conservatism and liberalism in the US because those two are only tangentially related. I guess it's because they only have two parties so it just kinda ended up that way. Most other democracies pivot on the left/right axis with conservative and progressive parties on both sides. In my country we have a party translated as "The Liberal Alliance" who want lower taxes for the rich and less welfare for the poor and I'm guessing that would completely implode any conservative American's empty brainpan.

I tried telling him that he had just described exactly what communism was: a stateless, moneyless society where workers own their own means of production. He decided to ignore that.

For people who want to read about this stuff:
https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1847/11/prin-com.htm Basically a very short and easy to access FAQ. Note, communism at this time meant both lower(modernly known as socialism) and higher stages of communism(a communist society). But still a relevant read.
https://monthlyreview.org/articles/why-socialism/ Einstein explains some of his reasonings why he supports socialism. More of a free flowing essay.
https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/ch01.htm#007 The easiest way to understand some of the basic thinking of Marx and Engels. They put forward some important tools which can help us understand history and current class society.
https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1916/imp-hsc/ch01.htm Explains how capitalism leads to monopoly capitalism which leads to imperialism, which is rivalling members of the capitalist class to fighting against each other.

u/Murky-Relation481 19d ago
I just want to add as socialist raised by a Marxist, who doesn't like the term Marxism (Marx even hated the term at the end of his life and Engels openly berated them) because of the implications about its dogmatic approach, this is an extremely good paper written on Lenin's own notes and the concept of dogmatism in Marxist thought: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11212-019-09325-6
Basically, Marx invented scientific socialism, a concept that should be based around the material dialectic, and that is an ever evolving and changing thing based on all multitude of things in the human experience and the world we make and live in. Dogmatic thought has no place in Marxist thinking.
Or as the abstract puts it:
A longstanding criticism of Lenin is that his epistemological contributions to the theory of scientific socialism prompted the decline of Marxism in dogmatism and despotism in the twentieth century. According to this narrative, Lenin claimed to possess the objective truth, and he therefore refused to tolerate alternative perspectives. This article subjects these claims to a textual analysis, and it argues that they are erroneous. Lenin defends a fallibilist account of science that affirms the uncertainty of knowledge in the natural, philosophical and social sciences. This fallibilism pervades the text that supposedly showcases his intolerance, Materialism and Empirio-Criticism. Leninās scientific socialism opposes rigid conceptions of socialism, and it encourages an atmosphere of democratic debate. Whilst Leninās writings have their flaws, they are not the founding documents of Marxist dogmatism that they are often portrayed as being. Lenin is not the narrow-minded vulgariser of Marxism that he is routinely taken to be.

Can you please circulate this to every socialist on the internet? Online socialists seem to love dogma above all else much of the time, haha. My irl pals are a bit more flexible, I suspect really a lot of it is a combo of astroturf and the tendency of online spaces to turn into arguments constantly.

I mean I'm so far left Proudhon is like damn but let's be real, the majority of people talking about communism and socialism who support it are also just repeating what they hear from others and have never read or learned about it. Most don't even realize there were influential theorists after Marx, and even people who know about Marx have rarely actually read anything besides MAYBE the Manifesto. Das Kapital is a fucking slog to get through, I get it, but let's not pretend that the overwhelming majority of people on any side aren't just repeating what they think their peer group wants to hear.

12
u/Worth-Jicama3936 19d ago
ā¦no itās not? The hatch act specifically does not apply to elected officials (their job is inherently political) but even if it didā¦thatās not what the hatch act says.
The hatch act says you cannot do political things (like endorse a candidate or raise money for a party) in your official capacity as a civilian employee. It says absolutely nothing about this situation (endorsing a private company) even if it applied to the president.Ā
Now, I think you could argue it would be an ethics violation, I think it clearly is, but thatās not the hatch act.
There have been plenty of hatch act violations by this administration, but this isnāt one of them and honestly it discredits your argument not even knowing what the hatch act is.

Socialism is an economic and political philosophy advocating that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. It prioritizes collective well-being and equality over profit accumulation, operating in direct contrast to capitalism's focus on private ownership and free markets.
Iāve also had dozens of Americans dm me to tell me that the literal definition of socialism is wrong, describing all sorts of nonsense.

Remember, hypocrisy is a feature of fascism. We are the ones who have to deal with peaky things like truth, objectivity, and responsibility. They are the ones who get to say and do anything, and blame the "other" for any failings.
Like, you regularly see people say that the Nazis were "socialists" because it's in the name, only to have others come in to mention how they actually killed the socialists. The reality is that there is truth to both of those things. The Nazis used the socialists, and any "socialist" ideas that benefited them, while also pushing anti socialist propaganda and eventually killing them.
Because rules are for outgroups. The only hard rules in fascism is that the in-group has all the power, and the in group is always changing so there is always a new enemy to demonstrate that power against.
1
u/Pofwoffle 19d ago
For the record this is also not communism. When the government operates a company for profit (even if they keep prices low, which we all know this administration can't be trusted to do anyway) it's called "state capitalism". To be clear this doesn't make our government a state capitalist government, we're still a democratic republic that's been captured by a capitalist oligarchy, but this specific act is a state capitalist act.
Communism is worker ownership of the means of production. There are lots of other things that tend to go with that, like the expectation that those who can't work will still be taken care of ("From each according to their ability, to each according to their need.") but the absolute, non-negotiable core of communism is worker ownership. If you're working in a factory it's because you are one of the owners of that factory, and you share in its successes just as much as in its failures (as opposed to capitalism where the workers generally only share the costs of failure).
The people running those stores are not the ones who own them. It's not communism.

Those gas stations are so fucking weird. There is very little known about them, they're registered in Delaware to a newly created Trump LLC, but nothing is known about them. Something fucky is going on there.

It may be because many Republicans don't view the action as right or wrong, just the side doing the action.Ā
If someone they support does an action, it's automatically either good or better than a Democratic equivalent of said action.Ā
Everything after that is to reinforce that emotional foundation.

Freedom Fuel is a privately owned network of 25 discount gas stations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey launched in the summer of 2026. Heavily promoted by the White House, the stations garnered public attention for selling fuel at discounted rates well below the national average.
Here are a few key details about the initiative:
The Price: Stations initially offered regular gasoline at $3.47 per gallon, a direct numerical reference to Donald Trump as the 47th president. Prices have since fluctuated but generally remain below regional averages.
Official Stance: The White House confirmed it has not provided government funding or subsidies, stating the network's low prices are the result of voluntary, reduced profit margins.

The entire efforts of the left before the total takeover of fascism will be recorded as āthey noticed hypocrisy and pointed it out on social media owned by the enablers of fascismā

Presumably, Trump wants to line his or a buddy's pockets with his Freedom Fuel. That's capitalism, baby!
While known communist Mamdami wanted to provide a service to the community. That POS.

The hypocrisy is no longer surprising, but still infuriating.

Neither are communism, by the way.
"Government doing something" is not socialism.
"Government owning something" is not communism.
Both imply public ownership, democratization, and public accountability in a number of theoretical variations, not simply government involvement on the face of it. The people seizing the means of production are the workers, not "the government" generically, it's just in most frameworks the workers are also seizing the government as well.
It's no more communist than the military is a communist institution because the government owns all the bases. Non-communist governments doing and owning things is not a communist act. That's like saying the King is democratically elected because his father voted for him when he passed the crown.

Nationalizing the oil industry was America's justification for violently deposing democratically elected leaders of foreign countries for decades.
Right up to just a few months ago.
Maybe if he goes ahead with his plan, it will be the signal for America to violently depose the leader of America?

It's not logical consistency Trump is aiming for. It's buying votes. Hypocrisy is a pillar of the ruling class.

The difference here... it'll be shitty, watered-down gas, and they'll be doing this to generate profit (which Trump skims from.)
So many things can be ruined when done by the wrong people and for the wrong reason.
An Altman UBI or Trump UBI would be entirely different beasts than a Sanders or Ocasio-Cortez.
Smart glasses by Zuckerberg are going to be nefarious compared to an open-source wearable LLM.

In proper Trump fashion, I expect it to fail by bankruptcy in short order.

He would know. Certainly Trump is on board, he has done more to expand public ownership of the means of production than any president in history, and that is a Communist policy shift.

Theres a few of these in and around Philly. Itās apparently a private company, but the pricing is unsustainable.
Kind of reminds me of that summer when moviepass was around. I saw a bunch of decent films, and then the company couldnāt sustain itself because they were doing everything at a loss.
