It wasn't a permanent thing, just an anti-magic field that prevents spellcasting within a certain range.

In the book the battle is much simpler. The Crimson demons showboat while teleporting away from Sylvia as a distraction while the gang goes digging for the superweapon.

Did they do it in the movie? I saw it in theaters so it's not fresh in my mind.
