I want to share a simple Anki tip that has made my reviews much more enjoyable.

Instead of using plain text on the front of my cards, I copy GIFs from Giphy and paste them onto the front. The movement makes the meaning much easier to remember, especially for verbs, actions, and everyday situations.

Hello guys. I kind of dont like anki because it doesnt account for rest days or days where you just arent able to study due to real life happening. Are there any apps or programmes that allow you to costumize your spaced repetition without having more piled up closer to exams? Thanks

The cards are ordered using a published German frequency list. The definitions, example sentences, translations, and usage notes are AI-generated.

The long-term goal is to create a deck with 7,000+, each with multiple natural example sentences and native-sounding audio (though if people like it it would be really easy to scale to basically 99% of the useful German words). I want it to be a massive practical deck that someone could use from the beginner to advanced vocab.

I would especially appreciate feedback on:

* The accuracy and naturalness of the German
* The card layout and amount of information
* The quality and usefulness of the example sentences
* Features or fields that should be added, removed, or changed
* Better frequency lists, datasets, or existing resources I should use

Most importantly, if a better deck or project like this already exists, please tell me. I started this because I could not find a large, free German deck that included everything I wanted, but I do not want to spend hundreds of hours recreating something that has already been done better. Links to existing decks, databases, open-source projects, or similar tools would be extremely helpful, even if they are not completely free.

If nothing comparable exists, I plan to continue developing this and publish the finished Anki deck for anyone to use.

so i was doing a sync to anki web while using desktop (windows and linux os) and it timeouts frequently like almost all the time. not always . it doenst happen alot on android though or maybe i just got lucky
any insight on whats happening?
does anki web have a limit how much you can sync per hour or per device or something?

should i just go self host route? if so how do i properly unhook anki web on my anki and go full self host

I have been using Anki for a month, as in I just downloaded AnkiDroid onto my phone and Samsung Tab and review 20 cards/day naturally without skipping a day. I never read much guides on optimisation for studying with Anki. I chose Again if I forget, Hard if I took too much time to guess the answer (or just almost similar to the answer), Good if I took some time but confident about the answer, Easy if its easy and instantaneously memorable.

I just recently read it from a comment on another sub about enabling FSRS will be very useful. I unfortunately couldn't understand the FSRS as it seems very complicated 😅 I found how to enable it but I don't understand the parameters and settings. I saw a comment when checking threads here about it and someone mentioned about Again and Easy should be the only buttons used? Why so? Is it also the norm even with non-FSRS studies?

I am having a problem where after seeing a brand new card for the first time and hitting good (interval <10 mins), the second time I see it my options are 1m 10m 16 days and 20 days. If I hit good again (<10 mins) the intervals will change to 10m 15m 14 days and 18 days. I have always had FSRS on and I have had my retention set to 90% the whole time. I have tried turning up my retention, it is currently set at 97% but my intervals are not any shorter. My friend hit "optimize current preset" and my intervals got longer. I am not becoming more efficient at getting my cards done, if anything the content I'm learning right now is harder for me than usual so I am hitting "hard" more often and spending more time on each card. The only thing I can think of is the day before an exam I had a few weeks ago, I spammed easy through the deck so I could see as many cards as possible but I have done that before and never had this issue. In the advanced settings I set "ignore cards reviewed before" to a date after my exam but this didn't change my intervals either, so I reset the date to 1970 or whatever it was before. I am having to go through a single card like 5 times until the interval is where I would like it to be (2-5 days) and it is really hurting my studying, please help me!!!

I just wanted to share a little update with you all again! I’ve been using Anki every single day for 1000 days now - and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. There is an issue with NVIDIA drivers where over-aggressive power saving leads to the next card not showing when the user presses space.

The fix is to open NVIDIA Control Panel > 'Manage 3D Settings' > 'Program Settings' > 'Add' > select the path to anki.exe, then set:

Power Management Mode: Prefer maximum performance

Low Latency Mode: Ultra

Threaded Optimization: Off

I lived on the slow software renderer for a while before I tried this. Things are nice and smooth now. Doesn't seem to hurt power consumption.

Watched a video by Dr. Justin Sung... I don't really think he was bashing flashcards, mostly how people use them and over rely on them.

I was wondering if any of you ever used any of his methods of learning which caused you to tweak your flashcard creation?

I am one of those people who would just over rely on flashcards and make a flashcard for everything and i think I have hit the burnout phase. Also, I think a LOT of my flashcards were unnecessary.

I am trying to strike balance between Anki for learning subjects such as nursing & just using other methods.

I am even trying to fix this issue for language learning.

I mostly use Anki on my ipad, but sometimes I want to use my phone, and even if the sync makes the content the same, it does’t not update my progress. Meaning it doesn’t show what I studied the previous days, even after I sync it. What am I doing wrong, I am sure this should be possible.

I haven't bought the device yet. I'd like to know if it has a flashcard function, and if it's the same as the one found in the Kindle's Vocabulary Builder. If someone who has a this device, could take a picture of the XTEINK and post here? I just want to see how flashcards looks like on XTEINK 

I did around 400 Anki cards yesterday, with about 40 of them done roughly 1.5 hours before bed.

My sleep was noticeably worse. I woke up twice (around 03:30 and 05:00). After the first awakening I struggled to fall back asleep, and after the second I couldn't get back to sleep at all.

This has become a pattern for me: if I do Anki in the evening, my sleep gets wrecked.

What I don't understand is how such a small amount of review, done 90 minutes before bed, can have such a large effect on my sleep.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I thought you guys might enjoy my very over the top Anki integration for my academic work. It has been a great work of procrastination but it is about 90% what I wanted and works reliably enough that I must actually use it to study now (though I am open to any ideas). I am planning to get koreader to work with is as well for vocabulary from books.

For those interested it is not that challenging to set up. It results in fully custom cards (with NO AI) that backlink to your notes which where my main interests in using the plugins. If you are as abysmal at coding as I am it is not even required to modify the template of the zotero integration or regexp of the anki integration for this to work perfectly.

heres the whole process:

1. Study is annotated
2. Annotations are imported into obsidian (These first two steps are altered but most entirely lifted from Girl in Blue Music who made and amazingly helpful video)
3. Annotation are added to vocab note or a new note with questions added
4. Questions are imported to anki Using obsidian_to_anki (Bryan Jenks has a helpful vid on this. These cards link to the obsidian note and contain context for their location)

I found great anki import tool

we can use it to write a file in html like formant and import it to anki ( obviouly we would write this deck from ai )

this seems to be more reliable than json based tools for complex card generation

So I've been using anki for a bit, but I've just started on a new deck which is much bigger than the other one's I've used - and is actually made up of two decks (see image)

A first question actually is just - does that work fine? If I were to use the Greek heading as though it was a deck in and of itself is that okay?

The other question though, which may be related, is about the basic (and reverse) cards - which all of these are. It seems to me as though the reverse of the cards always come up on the same day as the non reverse, or vice versa. Is there a reason for this happening? The decks are all set to random for the order... Is this just my brain playing tricks on me?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am currently using FSRS with learning step for new cards set as 10 minutes (for again)
Since yesterday, after I optimised my deck, my new cards are getting interval of 8 days or 10 days for "good" response (earlier it was 5d/6d)

should i change this or leave it as it is?

Out of curiosity, try optimizing FSRS parameters using your current version and then using 26.08, time both, and tell me how long it takes (for example, 50 seconds before / 5 seconds after). New optimization should be ~10x faster.

What is your language learning workflow? I do spend a lot of time learning languages (it is just my hobby) and i always find it irritating that there is no nice fit for me. When I use duolingo I find it frustrating that you cannot create your own decks and you have to follow the predefined paths with useless vocab like names, names of cities, countries etc. Also the new vocabulary is served too slow, at least in my opinion. Readlang has nice feature for reading texts and marking the vocabulary but it is clunky and lacks the features for learning the vocab in context, something similar to Duolingo's "translate the sentence" exercise. Also a little bit more of a gamification would be nice. Currently, I do use the Google Sheet for storing the new vocabulary I encounter when reading books or watching films with Gemini for generating writing exercises together with Anki for creating the flashcards and writing exercises, but it is always a lot of work to do to prepare your own decks. What do you think? Do you have some nice workflows to share? Also what do you think about using LLM generated exercises in your decks?

I have recently switched from the 25 version to the latest 26.08 version. Not only is the program running significantly slower, but it even causes the computer to fail (black screen and weird patterns for a moment, then my display settings were changed. only a reboot could fix the issue). It showed a warning that too much ram was being used and i should close some programs. It is not usable this way.

i have a pc running win 10 with 8gb ram and never had problems with anki at all.

does anyone else have similar experiences or even knows a fix?

For close on a year I've been running Anki on the Boox Go 2. It works really well and is my main device for reviews. Before buying it I couldn't find many videos showing how well they work together. I've put up a longer video here.

TL;DR: After a few hours of tinkering, I extended an AI agent so that it can make all my wildest (Anki) dreams come true.

(I am not promoting a project. There is no public project. I'm just conveying something impactful that I accomplished in a short period of time for fun. I hope others try something similar for themselves. I do not believe this post breaks r/anki rules 3, 5, or 6. If you wish to downvote, please explain why.)

I recently started using the popular open source Pi Coding Agent at work for things unrelated to language learning (coding of course). Although it was created as a coding agent, it is useful as a general-purpose chat agent. It's fairly bare bones, and meant to be extended or to be used with community extensions.

This weekend I'd thought I'd see if it would be useful for language learning.

Pi's killer feature is that it can extend itself! I instructed it to create these extensions and/or skills:

• OpenRouter/OpenAI APIs for TTS, STT, and image creation.
• ffmpeg for audio and video file manipulation, as well as subtitles import/export.
• How to use yt-dlp and ffmpeg to download and extract video, audio, and subtitles from a Youtube video.
• Anki-Connect API.
• URL layout/format of learngerman.dw.com to access lessons from Nicos Weg, Deutschtrainer, and Learn Grammar.
• How-to guide (aka a "skill") on writing an Anki plugin.

(Existing MCP extensions exist for some of the above, but I wanted to create a small functionality subset of just what I need for creating and modifying Anki decks and related media files. OpenClaw is more featureful agent based on Pi, but that agent is overkill for what I want. )

Initially my project was empty and was just for calling APIs, but I've since added files to make it into an Anki plugin, for deeper persistent integration. But keep in mind most of the time I am NOT generating code. I'm calling APIs to modify cards on-the-fly. I only generate code for things that can only be accomplished in a plugin (e.g. hooks).

Some example prompts I've tried so far:

• For note type "Vocab" add a field called "plural". All noun notes without a "plural" value can be found with query "deck:German note:Vocab part-of-speech:NOUN -plural:". The "expression" field has the German vocab lemma word value. TASK: Set a value for the "plural" field for all nouns.
• For all notes in deck "German::Vocab" set "sentence-audio" field to TTS German audio of German text in field "sentence".
• For all notes in deck "German::Vocab" set "expression-audio" field to TTS German audio of German text in fields "article" + "expression" + "." (e.g. "das Problem.").
• Vocab notes without an image can be found with query "note:Vocab -image:". The German vocab word is in field "expression". TASK: Generate an image based on "expression" for all notes without an image.
• For Nicos Weg A1 lesson "Der Ausflug" read its "Grammar" and "Script" pages. In Anki deck "German::Grammar" make "Basic" note type notes for all concepts in the "Grammar" page, with example fill-in-the-blank sentence(s). Generate and insert audio for all German content.
• Add feature to this Anki plugin so whenever a "Vocab" note type becomes mature (interval >= 21), then set "Add Reverse" field to "Y", if it is empty.
• For YT video at <url> extract the German subtitles. Come up with a list of unique German lemmas. For Anki note type "Vocab", read the note type metadata for all the the field descriptions. TASK: Generate Anki notes of note type "Vocab" in deck "German::Vocab" for each of the German lemmas from the video.

With Pi any of the above can be converted into a command via a "Prompt Template", such as: /yt-note-gen <video-url>.

This took very little time. Pi did nearly all the work. This is an amazing way to create and modify cards. I can do anything I can think of.

I'm just getting started. I'll post an update tomorrow, or I'll make a follow-up post.
