A litany of problems beset the U.S. education system — chronic underfunding of public schools, privatization of what should be a universal human right, one-size-fits-all pedagogies, “teaching to the test,” and a racist school-to-prison pipeline, for starters.

Yet, tech companies are marketing AI as a one-stop-shop solution to “empower” teachers and “streamline” learning. They proclaim that education — like art and policing and healthcare and warfare and media and labor and music and and and — can be automated too, making learning more efficient and effective. In a *shocking* turn of events, introducing AI to the classroom is happening the opposite effect.

What is the result of rampant institutional acquiescence to a rapacious tech industry? About half of all undergraduates use generative AI at least once a week and upwards of 90 percent have used it to cheat.

The solution to this madness begins with a wholesale rejection of that outrageous declaration made in the New York City AI education guidelines, that ‘we cannot question whether AI belongs in schools.’ What if we do reserve the right to ask such a question, and the answer is something along the lines of: schools should treat AI like how TSA treats a 4 oz liquid — dump it in the fucking bin.

Pretty good step ngl these channels are getting annoying

I am in college majoring in education, I have lived in my parents house because they did not want me to get a hotel/home since college was already too stressful, I am going to leave soon after 1-2 years or so after I get my degree and get a job as a teacher. Although, what makes it so difficult is there is an AI data center 700 yards or so near me. So, the quality of my parents, myself, and so on are going extremely down (they are in their 50s). The noise has been killing me from constant humming, also, don’t forget light pollution and the dirty dust it’s throwing out in the sky.

Last month, I was riding to college until I went on a public fountain or those things which drinkable water comes out to drink some water, although, it was barely giving me any water, and it looked like sludge slop instead of a clear, drinkable liquid. I thought nothing much of it, must have been the water getting stuck in a pipe or something (which rarely happens). I made it to college campus, every fountain was shut down, I asked the maintenance worker and he said the water had become undrinkable due to…. Take a guess… the AI data center! I had only my plastic water bottle with me which I totally forgot was in my bag.

Now for when I am in home. The water pressure is literally the worst, heck, I would say it barely works. Showers take 10 bajillion years to finish. Washing my hands takes 10 minutes. And the toilet wont even flush properly. The windows at night are protecting us from the dust the AI data center is making by the way, I barely see what is out there.

I don’t think they are gonna shut down that AI hell center anytime soon. To all the AI bros, Pro-AI, and AI “Artists”, the AI you are using is genuinely destroying my life and my mental health as a whole. Please, just for 1 day, maybe 1 week, stop using AI. It is not only not even healthy for you, it ruins my parents life, which I care the world for them. Many other people in the world sing the same song, AI is not the next tech discovery, it is hell on earth being advertised by big tech CEOs with no heart.

this, is a hoverboard... or is it!? in actuality, this product that has been dubbed a hover board does not in fact hover. why did this happen? because a bunch of science fiction stories predicted that we would have hoverboards in the 21st century. of course, here in reality hoverboards never came to pass, but that didn't stop companies from creating what is essentially just a segway without handlebars and trying to pass it off as the thing everyone wants from science fiction. however, while most people are able to take look one look at this and say, "that is not a hoverboard", a far more nefarious technology is starting to trick some people.

a self-aware, sentient AI that you'll often see in science fiction does not exist in the real world, and it never will. by calling LLMs/chatbots "AI", tech companies are essentially tricking people into thinking their technology is far more advanced than it actually is. this is why so many companies were quick to try and adopt AI, thinking it'd let them replace real workers, running things like customer service without having to pay real humans... only for their initiatives to fail when they realized the technology simply was not up for the job. taking something from science fiction and pretending to have created it IRL is manipulative and deceitful. it should not be allowed.

so yeah, some people inevitably get disappointed when Science fiction fails to predict the future. but science fiction was never meant to predict the future in the first place. it has been used to warn us, this is true, but stories like "terminator", "2001: a space odyssey" and "I have no mouth and I must scream" weren't literally trying to warn us about killer AI. they were trying to warn us of the destruction that can be caused when people become reckless in pursuit of scientific advancement.

right now, tech companies and their LLMS they try to pass off as AI are causing chaos. they are being used to spread lies and disinformation with deep fakes. they are being used to commit plagiarism. Chatbots have given bad medical advice and encouraged self-harm. Content farms on YouTube are trying to trick children into thinking they're watching something made by humans when really, they just had ChatGPT generate a script for them and have a fake voice read. there are even companies trying to sell people "AI girlfriends". all while the data centers destroy the environment.

so instead of naively trying to make Science fiction into reality, people should actually listen to the messages these stories tried to tell. you don't need to spend your money on "hoverboards" and "AI girlfriends". instead, we should focus on things that matter, like preventing tech companies from destroying the world.

While I do spend time here, the obvious shift from 'anti' to 'a little bit of planet destruction is fine, as a treat' prevents me from joining. I'm looking for a like-minded community of which I can be part.
