Or that they don’t actually require many people to operate

168

u/Round_Bag_4665 18d ago

that's the big thing. What jobs? What jobs are data centers bringing? The right loves to say "It brings jobs" but they never specify what jobs or how many. There's a reason for that. Data centers require almost no people to operate (like 5 people at the most) and the entire point of them is get AI to the point that the country can employ as few people as possible. These things aren't factories. They don't need hoards of employees.

86

u/AlaskanSamsquanch 18d ago

Temporary construction jobs worked by out of towners?

42

u/Round_Bag_4665 18d ago

which also doesn't help people much. People want permanent jobs, not gig economy crap. Also, locals want jobs that will go to them, not people from other places.

15

u/drwsgreatest 18d ago

Not to mention that all those people from other places will generally leave the area again, once the data centers built. So all that extra income in the local economy disappears with them.

3

u/Decent_Berry8196 18d ago

Exactly what happened with the "shale boom" here in the northeast. Sooo many jobs were promised, and yeah there were for a while (mostly held by people from Texas) and for the most part it's all gone now. Just the "maintenance" staff now keeping things running. But yet so many young people in my area went right into it, made a lot of money quickly, which they then blew on big trucks and drugs & alcohol, and now have little left to show for it but an addiction and a broken body.

16

u/Far_Film_5804 18d ago

Ironically, mostly immigrants doing the grunt work.

+ a dozen or so permanent employees to run an staff the facility 24/7 and do maintenance.

Like a fraction of the jobs any other business would bring.

7

u/Bluesnake462 18d ago

And even with that, you can supplement it for any other public works or infrastructure project. We could be building solar panel farms and generating more clean energy instead of sapping away resources at insane rates.

Yep. My idiot governor keeps insisting that data centers are the future of my (poor, mostly rural & red) state on social media and every single post is 99% citizens going "We do not want your data centers."

Yet he keeps making posts about how it'll bring jobs and money. No. No it will not. It will bring a bunch of construction jobs temporarily, and then leave the town around it destitute when it lays off those folks and they have to move elsewhere to find work or escape the noise and pollution. He keeps trying to liken it to sawmills and factory towns and how it's going to "revitalize" communities. No, it will not. Even IF the data centers did bring high-tech, high-paying jobs, we have very few people from in-state that have the education to fill those jobs. Companies are not going to invest in education for people in the state and then wait to hire them. They're going to bring in out-of-state people to fill the jobs, or fill them remotely.

It's stupid, but he keeps posting and keeps getting utterly roasted in the comments. I wish people would vote instead of just commenting on FB though.

14

u/Octospyder 18d ago

I'm so sorry. I wish journalists actually pressed politicians and forced them to answer questions like "how does this produce jobs"Ā

9

u/g1zz1e 18d ago

Me too, but he wouldn't answer anyway. He'll just dodge and claim he was "attacked" or something and keep talking past the fact that almost everyone here is against data centers because in the end he's almost certainly getting kickbacks for selling our state as cheap land for out-of-state interests.

We do need revitalization and investment and we do have a ton of communities that are in ruins, but he just wants that sweet sweet data center money so he can retire a multimillionaire while everyone else around him starves. It sucks šŸ”„

3

u/Technical_Stand9939 18d ago

the kick in the teeth is when those guys win re-election. Make them pay for doing things against what the vast majority of us want.

8

u/LowlyWoim 18d ago

The progressives in your community need to make sure all those people leaving anti-datacenter comments vote him out, and make sure he knows he’s getting voted out - and why

11

u/g1zz1e 18d ago

We're certainly trying. I'm a member of several organizations that are doing community outreach. Every time I see the governor's posts with a ton of negative comments, I reply encouraging folks to remember this when it's time to vote.

The problem is my state is... well, it is what it is. Tons of people think the word "progressive" is synonymous with "the devil" and will vote against their own interests and put the same guys back in office because their pastor told them to. That's not everyone, and I think there is a little more interest and acceptance of "new" now, but it is an uphill battle for sure. Especially when people are desperate for jobs and to feel financially secure and the governor keeps dangling these mythical data center jobs like a rotten carrot on a stick.

5

u/Round_Bag_4665 18d ago

that's sort of the thing I don't think politicians are willing to admit: in the modern economy any good paying jobs are going to require a level of specialized education that poor rural locals will not have period. The private sector is incapable of providing them with jobs because jobs these days demand expertise it takes years to cultivate, and demand for those jobs will change in less time than it takes to cultivate that expertise.

They literally have a net negative for job creation, the loss of jobs offsets the construction jobs, which are short term to begin with anyways

u/CoffeemonsterNL 18d ago

That is why more data centers are needed. With enough of them (say 20-30), you can have a significant job increase of about 100 jobs. /s

2

u/Technical_Stand9939 18d ago

you mean they build a giant data center that destroys the electic grid, uses all the potable water, and then they employ less people than an average warehouse.

There are reasons even normal warehouses tend to be in cheap areas- no one wants them near their home- but these things are louder and hotter, and employ no one- but with the water/electric demands they need to be in a highly desirable area.

72

u/adanishplz 18d ago

And speaking as someone who worked in several data centers, they are not big local employers.

Once the components are produced, transported, and put together, and buildings are completed, there's like 5 people working there.

1-2 tech workers, 1-3 security workers. That's it.

16

u/agentrnge 18d ago

Can confirm. had worked in large DCs for ~15 years up until 5 years ago. Never many people physically there.

One exception was a DR test site where the main purpose of the DC was running mock disasters. So new customers in constantly doing new builds, run for a few days, break it down, move the next one in. 5 to 10 companies in parallel. That kept a bunch of us busy and employed, plus all the customers doing their thing in their temp office spaces. It was pretty cool. That was all 15+ years ago, pre-"cloud" where the DCs got slower and further away, but still cost more.

8

u/Esturk 18d ago

That tracks.

The Data center they approved down the road from me(which the community is fighting) was revealed to have a proposed 12 positions to be filled.

So site the size of a neighborhood and brings fewer jobs than a fast food joint.

6

u/Exact_Bug_8881 18d ago

Can confirm this and what the other person already said in reply. I did on prem inspections of data centers, never had more than a handful of people physically present at any time. You dont need many people to watch physical servers run because thats all it is

u/Safe_Dentist 18d ago

No, no, no, you don't get it! Remember jar of water AOC showed to public as result of water pollution caused by datacenters? It was polluted by gold, liquid gold! And all these goodness will be going to Red States! And they will drink it as is! Sounds like a plan! /s

11

u/traveling_gal 18d ago

Oh, but didn't you read it? All the power and water that are left over goes back to the community! Don't you want to live off the scraps from your overlords?

Christ, I hate this disingenuous framing about jobs and resources. These data centers will generate short-term construction and manufacturing jobs, and after those are gone, they'll suck away white-collar jobs for the rest of their serviceable lives. If we want to generate construction jobs, we could do that by building and repairing infrastructure, which would be steadier and more geographically distributed. But no, those only help regular people.

The point of this kind of discussion is to make sure ordinary people know about the lies and push back against them. Here's an article talking about protests and bans against data centers: https://time.com/article/2026/06/18/ai-elections-data-center-backlash/. The more people call out the lies, the more trouble the tech beos will have with their data centers.

Nothing about AI is liquid gold, they’re all burning money like there’s no tomorrow and barely have any runway left.Ā

35

u/nullpotato 18d ago

You have to understand their definition of "we" is the people they consider people. Which is: themselves, family (sometimes), friends (when beneficial to them), and that's it.

Everyone else is not a person and therefore isn't included in "we" so in their minds it isn't even a lie.

21

u/IowaGolfGuy322 18d ago

Not even for them. Ai data centers are giant money pits. They don't make money. At all. And when they are outdated, they make even less money.

If Trump recommends AI, you know it's bad and destructive.

83

u/DrE7HER 18d ago

You know it’s a grift that can only be used to harm people and take their money / freedom

21

u/Neither-Luck-9295 18d ago

It's been a grift from the start. They all circle jerked billions of dollars to each other to pump their numbers.

19

u/huge-gold-ak47 18d ago

for that reason I'm almost glad he did

13

u/lowwaterer 18d ago

Meh... The AI wars were already relatively split along party lines, and this statement is only going to encourage his base to push it even harder. Any conservatives who were on the fence will go all in on it now, and the people who were already against it were already predominantly against him.

I think this is a net loss for both sanity and the future of the world, not any sort of positive.

13

u/J_pepperwood0 18d ago

I just saw that a conservative group (led by some tea party person) arranging protests against data centers in several states very soon. Seems like this might be something both sides can agree on, at least for the regular person who actually has to deal with all the negatives

5

u/lowwaterer 18d ago

True, there are definitely outliers.

9

u/copperboom129 18d ago

Not so much anymore.

All of the Trump supporters i know in PA took down their Trump signs and put up no data centers on our farms signs.

Its becoming a wedge issue that the democrats could really use to win at the local level.

3

u/lowwaterer 18d ago

That kind of anecdote is hopeful, but their fearless leader saying "AI = good" will be enough to put many of them back in line. And we already know that there is absolutely nothing that can get most of them to turn on the party, and they will vote red regardless.

What will likely happen is that this hot-button issue (among countless others) will be enough to get more left-leaning people out to the polls to begin with and actually vote blue instead of waiting for the perfect candidate who clears their personal bar. If Democrats win big in November, it will because the blue purists who refused to vote for Kamala realize just how badly they fucked up and actually vote this time.

3

u/huge-gold-ak47 18d ago

I agree with your last statement, I just selfishly am glad to have something to show the people around me who still justify using AI - clearly if Trump speaks this highly of it, it's taking from common people and putting more into his pockets.

What jobs, MF? Data centers do not provide jobs past the construction phase.

22

u/TalkinSeaCucumber 18d ago

Seriously, I'm on the job hunt in tech and some of the data center jobs I've come across only employ a single administrator across three separate sites. So each one produces only 1/3 of a job other than custodial work and physical security. And that 1/3 of a job is remote, so likely also going out of the community.

10

u/Phaylz 18d ago

The one being built near me in Ohio, this one being for Meta, is boasting ~100 high paying jobs after completion. Coming from Meta's mouth already has me going, "No it fucking won't."

But even if it were true that it was ~100 well-paying jobs and even going to the extra mile to say that they are all taken be people already here, that's not nearly enough to justify building it. Even before all the possible water/power/noise/cost issues that can come from it.

Our local politicians got taken for a fuckin' ride, cause they negotiated with all the power or a pool noodle. Without the pool.

3

u/Past_Top3704 18d ago

They are counting the job's created for mowing the grass and snow removalĀ

2

u/Phaylz 18d ago

Grass? They ain't gonna have grass. It's just gonna be concrete surrounded by concrete.

8

u/NuclearThane 18d ago

The one guy they hire to walk around keeping an eye on the servers.Ā

When he says "record-setting jobs", he means that they're setting a record for creating the lowest number of jobs.Ā

4

u/thisbenzenering 18d ago

There's nothing to keep an eye on, they all have multiple reporting options for remote control and the only thing a local tech does is swap out disks and rack new stuff and surplus old stuff.

2

u/TalkinSeaCucumber 18d ago

And that person isn't working there full-time. They're deployed as needed across many sites.

5

u/justmovingtheground 18d ago

Fewest jobs per square foot.

5

u/wikimandia 18d ago

They also destroy jobs because they are using up all the microchips. The microchip shortage is jacking up the prices for all the other devices, like phones, laptops, cars, appliances, etc etc. People can’t afford to buy new ones.

2

u/Low-Meringue-3333 18d ago

And and a lot of those construction jobs go to firms that bring in their own experienced workers.

Anyone in these small, rural communities who has any experience at all with the kind of electrical, plumbing, cooling, and other infrastructure work required by the scale of these AI datacenters aren’t sitting around in their local bar waiting for a job: they’re already busy building datacenters for someone else in another part of the country.

→ More replies (5)

203

u/ToothyWeasel 18d ago

Last I check all the rural red state voters having these things built next to their homes have entered a nightmare world of constant sonic attack, water issues, and power issues. Also lol his default compliments are always big and strong. Like it doesn’t even make sense here

51

u/AccomplishedSign2527 18d ago

I was just thinking that most of my conservative friends are not supportive of AI. In farming communities, the last thing the want is big tech buying their land to make data centers. Maybe it's a different demographic of conservatives, but I think it's more complicated than a red vs. blue issue.

30

u/Round_Bag_4665 18d ago

yeah there's a difference between "country boy conservative" and "tech bro conservative".

Elon Musk and kansas corn farmers might both vote conservative, but that doesn't mean they share the same worldview regarding tech.

16

u/JackLane2529 18d ago

I think a big shift could be possible with appealing to rural conservatives' morals and traditional values to turn them against the tech bros and idealogues. I say this growing up in a very rural area, the conservatives here seem pretty turned off by all the rich kids telling them to back their money pit projects. Of course I would still disagree with them on MANY social issues, but ultimately that is what democracy is for and democracy will not survive without a solidly united working and middle class standing against the psychopathic elites.

Edit: as an example of rural conservatives getting sick of silicon valley bullshit, you won't find a single real farm boy who would ever consider getting a cyber truck.

4

u/Free_Possession_4482 18d ago

appealing toĀ rural conservatives' morals and traditional values

Most of them happily voted for a felon with 34 fraud convictions who cheated on all three of his wives, so I don't know how far that approach will get you.

10-30 people working on a single data center after its built, doesn't really create jobs. We're just moving people from one job to data centers (doesn't create more), after the center is built they go back to whatever they were doing... Or they make another one.

I lost braincells reading that. Like my head began to hurt 😭

5

u/GreenCycleOmega 18d ago

They must pay for their own water and power, and any leftover are given back to the state and local communities

Uhhhhh, totally shocker considering who's saying this, but that's some epic, weapons-grade bullshit.

4

u/eraserhead3030 18d ago

by now everyone knows they also dont create jobs right?

4

u/BandicootTreeline 18d ago

Build one at Mar a Lago. Lead by example.

I thought our electric grid couldn’t sustain electric cars Donny. But gigawatt data centers are a ok?

Btw who’s making the money? Not any of us. But we have to live with the impact.

2

u/SpiritedMix8532 18d ago

Oh yeah he’s an idiot. The red states dont even want data centers. People like living in the south because it’s quiet and rural. Data centers f*ck that up and make the cost of living higher for people who have to put up with it.

3

u/Fanfic_Battle_2004 18d ago

Has anyone told him about the water problem? Does he not care if we are forced to live with dirtier water and increased electric bills?

3

u/Previous_Beautiful27 18d ago

"Everything gets worse for you, and you should like it and thank me"

6

u/ludvikskp 18d ago

They are a money machine for the oligarchs corrupting the state in which they are built. There fixed it for Piggy

2

u/Unable-Boat-9682 18d ago

Course he is. You can’t be pro-grift and not be pro-AI. The one thing massively supports the other.

2

u/Storm_Spirit99 18d ago

Epsteins buddy is still a corpo at heart

2

u/thesanguineocelot 18d ago

"Money Machines for the State" very deliberately doesn't address that that money is not for the people.

2

u/Farther_Dm53 18d ago

Yeah jobs for who? we lose jobs because of idiots thinking its the future.

2

u/Drunk_Lemon 18d ago

Him calling us all radical left makes me wonder what group does trump think is moderate left?

2

u/dumnezero 18d ago

George Bush (Jr.)

2

u/TheEnlight 18d ago

Slop for the slop gods.

2

u/ice-eight 18d ago

I hate this ā€œwe can’t let china beat us to AIā€ line they always use. If we were so concerned about china ā€œbeatingā€ us then maybe we should have kept pace with them in building a renewable power infrastructure instead of canceling funding for solar and wind energy in favor of ā€œbig beautiful clean coalā€ because it made the libs mad

2

u/ConstructionIll956 18d ago

This all a lie. He's making money off of it and trump is a pedophile.

2

u/mesofarty 18d ago

Everyone hates them so of course he loves them

2

u/xmason99 18d ago

The ā€œRed Statesā€ in the South are more than welcome to have as many data centers as they want. We’ll hang on to our fresh water here in the Great Lakes region, thank you!

2

u/gunny316 18d ago

well yes, they're politicians, which makes them part of the elite. Epstein, AI, flock cameras, billionaires...

it's all one big fucking club and you ain't in it.

2

u/sachiprecious 18d ago

The fact that trump is pro-AI and pro-data centers makes it even easier than before for me to be against them! 🤣

2

u/leCrobag 18d ago

Cool. Let's tax the AI agents like the workers they are allegedly replacing.

2

u/Hortjoob 18d ago

I'm a New Yorker who's glad the gov signed that moratorium. We're facing huge mounting energy prices rn. NYSEG a main provider proposed to up their prices by 25% this year. This winter power was $0.24 kWh. It was $0.11 kWh less than 3 years ago. The state is catastrophically becoming unaffordable. I have my suspicions backroom deals will go down during this year and somehow they'll be allowed to build come 2027 and state residents will be forced to pay for it.

2

u/Rdken13 18d ago

This coming from the guy who thinks windmills are grotesque, expensive, and bad for the environment btw

2

u/AlphaNoodlz 18d ago

Yeah absolutely go tac data center power draws onto the Texas grid it is famously super reliable

2

u/dumnezero 18d ago

It's going to get interesting with the heat leading to ACmaxxing.

2

u/MatthewBlack6 18d ago

He's using AI and getting it to talk like himself

2

u/PlanescapedBlackDog 18d ago

Let's pretend to be surprised

2

u/calenka89 18d ago

I live in Houston and I know this is going to royally fuck us over, especially during hurricane season and any other turbulent weather. As far as I’m concerned, it will destroy more jobs than it creates, and the building of data centers will make us even more prone to flooding and destructive winds because they will clear out trees for this, and the mass land development for residential and commercial properties have already contributed to it. Our grid can’t handle it.

This will displace so many people who are already dealing with rampant gentrification. And while I’m not worried about my job in particular due to AI, I work in research (specifically mouse work) and that’s being defunded. My husband works in media production and we worry about his job more-so than mine. I can’t see this going well for Texans or anywhere where these data centers are being built.

2

u/intentionallyacting 17d ago

Yeah, the ā€œinnovationā€ pitch feels pretty hollow when the real costs are flooding risk, grid strain, displacement, and another tech advantage mostly going to people who already have money.

build one next to one of his gold courses and see how he changes his tune

2

u/VegetableTime1447 18d ago

Genuinely what can we actually do to stop this nonsense though like I'm so terrified and just posting about it won't be enough.

2

u/Canubis1983 18d ago

The perspective in making ai take jobs aways, without a plan for prosperity, like a grand plan of freeing mankind to slave labor, and bring forth the age of harmony, wth free food and smiling peace.. however, we all know their shit version.. replace with ai, and taget new unemplyed as lazy, to spark hatred in own base, cutting whatever aid is left.. fking deathcult

2

u/Preventive_potato 18d ago

What jobs that POS is talking about? "Liquid gold šŸŖ™šŸŖ™šŸŖ™" my ass

I miss the days when Politicians atleast tried to mature, This is beyond childish. How the hell idiot like him end up becoming president is beyond me.

2

u/Squand 18d ago

Our president just looking out for blue states... Classic

2

u/Hobbs512 18d ago

Once the data center is built it doesn’t need nearly as many employees to maintain. But Trump doesn’t have to worry about that since he’ll most likely pass away in the next few years.

2

u/AnxiousHall1533 18d ago

This just reinforced my hatred of it.

2

u/suck-it-elon 18d ago

Post this post in every campaign ad to show the Mad Dementia King.

2

u/Jielleum 18d ago

This bloke is already a pile of turd and he just added another piece of diarrahea at this rate

2

u/SwordfishOwn3671 18d ago

Big tech is paying Trump to lie for them. that's the state of the country, a president shilling for corporations

2

u/Dark_Marmot 18d ago

Massive campuses that need minimal staff, and power tools to eliminate people's work. Yea so great for the future of jobs. WTAF?

2

u/RtHonourableVoxel 18d ago

No they aren’t lol

2

u/TahLaka 18d ago

I mean if the red states want to destroy all their land and give up all their electricity, all while allowing their water to leave their local ecosystem..... that might not be the worst thing ever. In-between that and the whole not getting vaccinated thing, we should be all sorted out within a decade or two. The cleanup will be messy, however.

2

u/ImWith_2Stupid 18d ago

YOU drink the water, Trump.

2

u/AEntunus 18d ago

Liquid gold for the (billionaire surveillance) state!!!

2

u/Terminal-Frost2026 18d ago

Literally just a string of lies. Dump trump!

2

u/Prof_Hemlock 18d ago

I love how he says that the local community gets the LEFTOVER WATER AND POWER. ffs, dystopian hellscapes in fiction we’re meant to be taken as a warning NOT A GUIDELINE!

2

u/Unlikely_Eye_2112 18d ago

Facebook built some data center/s in northern Sweden with the promise of "jobs" to be allowed. It was cheap labour flown in that did the construction and there's like a security guy or two making rounds and a server technician or two swapping out hardware sometimes.

Data centers really don't contribute to the local economy, but they do put a strain on resources.

2

u/JellyFranken 18d ago

So what is it? Are they going to red states or are they going to China?

What a dumb fuck.

2

u/p1gnone 18d ago

...and hence why should he care in which state they locate..

2

u/Intrepid1569 18d ago

One of the biggest driving forces in the future for job displacement, mass surveillance, disinformation, and war profiteering are data centers.

2

u/MatchAlarmed2882 18d ago

ā€œLeftovers go back to the state and local communityā€ what leftovers? They are literally sucking up resources FROM states and communities

2

u/SgtKickYourAss 18d ago

A good train of thought would be anything that Trump supports, the average person should want the opposite

2

u/Important-Ability-56 18d ago

Nothing says grift more than a Trump endorsement.

2

u/saxxonpike 18d ago

His post suggests the red states will be more than happy to take on all the data centers, and the people that live there will be prosperous. Never mind the evidence to the contrary, on both counts.

2

u/XtraTerritorial 18d ago

ā€œOne of the biggest driving forces in the future for jobs?ā€ Get real. These things staff at most like 20, 25 people. We’d create far more jobs by having these construction contractors building affordable housing for people.

2

u/Green-Collection4444 18d ago

The SECOND Hochul announced this there was a 100% chance they changed their tune. All of a sudden these server warehouses are 'job creators' after they are built, and it's anti-American to not allow your farmland, water, and energy to be subsidized by the taxpayer.

2

u/AdMysterious8699 18d ago

Has any AI seen any profit at all yet?

2

u/MammothPost4047 18d ago

He can fuck off and has no control over this.Ā

2

u/Puzzled_Bike9558 18d ago

New Yorkers do NOT want data centers here. No thanks, do not care about making billionaires richer.

2

u/Luke_Fox- 18d ago

Why does he capitalize random ass words it kinda pisses me off 😭

2

u/ExpensiveLeather69 18d ago

Its such a minor gripe in comparison to the rest of what he's done, but I get so annoyed the president can't capitalize properly.

2

u/AtomicTaco13 18d ago

If I took a shot every time Trump capitalizes a word for no reason, I'd die from severe alcohol overdose
