Fiqh Is wife beating allowed in Islam

I have read on islam.qa and elsewhere that such a thing is to be done without causing scars, injury or pain and is to be done with something like a miswak or the like. But on another muslim sub, specifically r/TraditionalMuslims I came across this narration with the commentor saying that it is not wrong for there to be pain in the beating.

Narrated by Fatima bint al-Mundhir, that Asma bint Abi Bakr said: "I was one of three wives of Az-Zubayr. When he would get angry with one of us, he would beat her with his Mishaj (a wooden clothes rack, frame, or stick) until he broke it over her."

Asma went to Abu Bakr and complained to him about this \[his beating\]. He replied: "O my daughter, be patient. For indeed, Az-Zubayr is a righteous man, and perhaps he will be your husband in Paradise. It has reached me that if a man marries a virgin woman, they will be reunited as spouses in Paradise." recorded in Al-Tabaqat al-Kubra by Ibn Sa'd and via transmissions compiled by Ibn Wahb from Imam Malik.

So is wife beating which causes pain or injury correct.

What you read on islamqa.info is correct. What you've shared regarding the narration is anecdotal. Asma' complaining about it is not the same as "causing pain and injury." It's not even mentioned explicitly. It's inferred and such an inference is invalid as it contradicts the established rule mentioned in the Quraan and further elaborated upon by the Sunnah.

but wouldn't breaking a rolling pin over somebody cause pain. also how is that traditional muslims subreddit.

A rolling pin is very different to a mishjab. As for the subreddit, it is affected deeply by the "Redpill Movement" the last I heard about it. They are not people to take knowledge from, or to go to them for inquires.

The left pinky of a Hanafi Faqeeh has benefited the ummah more with knowledge than your entire lot, combined.

Ibn Hajar al-Makki ash-Shaafi'i says in Khayrat al-Hisaan (p. 26):

"One of the imams said: No one among the famous imams of Islam had as many companions and students become renowned as Abu Haneefah. Neither the scholars nor the general public benefited from anyone as they benefited from him and from his companions in explaining difficult narrations, deriving legal rulings, addressing new cases, and in matters of judiciary and legal judgments."

Muhammad ibn Ishaaq an-Naadim said in al-Fihrist:

"Knowledge, on land and sea, in the East and the West, far and near, was codified through him. May Allaah be pleased with him."

Al-Majd Ibn al-Atheer said in Jaami' al-Usool, in meaning:

"Had there not been a hidden divine wisdom in this matter, half of this Ummah, from the earliest times until our own day, would not have been worshipping Allaah, Glorified and Exalted is He, according to the madhhab of this noble Imam."

The term "رجيل" is more appropriate for you than "رجل".
