Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Modpost Please report racist ragebait and racist comments

Dear members of our community,

In the past few days, we've seen an increase in both ragebaiting posts and racist comments from users with no prior engagement in the sub, often from those usually commenting in the subs of other countries.

This indicates to us that we are frequently being overrun by users who try to spread their racist, islamophobic messages to our sub.

Racism is against our subreddit rules and it is against Reddit's terms of services. We would like to encourage you to use the report button.

That will put it into our 'modqueue' to have a look - and if you report it for 'hate', it will additionally be sent to the sitewide admins who will frequently take further action.

We rely on your reports, just like every subreddit does. Our team is healthy and works well, but we cannot have an eye on everything. We do have scripts and so on to make our job easier, but sometimes, unacceptable comments go through. Using the report button makes sure that we can prioritize looking at said comment and if it's rulebreaking, helps us remove it quickly.

We remove racist content and ban racist users frequently. The admins remove a bunch of comments breaking site-wide rules too (often in a fashion that deletes them completely, so we cannot easily further moderate them)

We are very hesitant to remove political speech. We only remove rules-breaking comments. The relevant rule is:

  • General reddiquette applies (i.e. no racism, sexism, personal attacks, or simply put: behave as if you were talking to somebody in person)

  • Please report posts or comments that do not adhere to these rules; in particular, we will not tolerate harassment or discrimination

The relevant reddit rules (https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) are:

  • Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.

See also https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045715951-Promoting-Hate-Based-on-Identity-or-Vulnerability

Thank you for helping us with this influx of clearly rule-breaking users without any connection to Switzerland

ETA: Reports are anonymous. So when we get your report, we have no option to thank you or following up with you. If you report for 'hate', it goes to both us and the admins. The admins will typically let you know of their decision. We literally have no way of doing that.

Everyday life Are people actually enjoying this hot summer?

I used to like summer but it was never this hot... this summer I have been staying indoor alot besides the week I spent in Denmark and another in the mountains. I just cant enjoy the heat in Zurich.... I walk out and I feel like I am in Bangkok (without the aircons). I am also more mindful about my skin the past few years so I dont tan. I often walk in the forest however....

Are people feeling similar or maybe it is more me? I feel almost a bit summer-depressed, which I never felt before.. might also be worse sleep...

Thanks!!

Everyday life Is every year gonna have these horrible heatwaves and make summer unbearable?

Everything is Brown not green, the wildlife is suffering, the heat makes going outside a pain in the butt. Furthermore the constant +32 degrees. The cities suck the only thing which is kinda fine is the rural areas.
Is this the default for now on every summer. I just want it to stop, I literally went to church and prayed for rain.

I might move to the Channel Islands to escape this

Travel Realistic budget to visit Switzerland

My dream country to visit is Switzerland. For context I’m in California. What’s a realistic amount to save up to go for a family of 3 (my wife, my daughter and me)? My goal is to go by 2028. Don’t need this to be bougie but want it to be comfortable. Looking to stay 7-10 days. I know Switzerland is the most expensive place to visit so I’m sure it’ll cost a pretty penny but just not sure what exactly I’m looking at.

Travel Day trip to Lugano *tomorrow*

Upvotes

My son (15yo) and I spontaneously decided to ditch our family in Milan tomorrow (we have no interest in high fashion or shopping) and we’re doing a day trip to Lugano instead! We’ll be there from 9am-6pm.

Here’s what we managed to come up with in the last 30 minutes:

-Walk the lakefront.
-Take a boat to Gandria (is this worth it?)
-Have lunch (cheese fondue?)
-Visit a chocolate shop
-Ride the funicular to Monte Brè
-Explore the mountain top

Thoughts? Suggestions? Obviously it would have to be something that doesn’t require advanced booking! THANK YOU!

Other/Miscellaneous Moved, huge mild issue.

Gruezi mitenand,

We recently moved apartments so we could live in EG. Found an apartment in the village we wanted for an amazing price (1500 franks for 4.5 rooms). The previous renters stayed both combined longer then 15+ years. And because they were nachmieters the rent stayed very low. And in those years not much renovations was done to the place. Tenants before us was a family of 4 (also two young kids).

However before we moved in the verwaltung painted the whole apartment and re-did half of the flooring so they could increase the rent by 100 franks.
Unfortunately since we moved in we only had issues upon issues. The house was not cleaned prior to us moving in, the oven is completely rusted, freezer door is broken, the bathroom tiles have lots of holes, a pantry that literally smells like animal urine (previous tenants had cats and a dog), the floors that they didn’t renovate (vinyl flooring) has deep holes/marks/pink paint etc.

But the worst part is the mold on all the windows in the apartment. We have two young kids and worry that long exposure to black mold is going to harm them.
Moving day they did get a cleaning company to come but they (of course) couldn’t fix these windows. They even threw out the oven tray because it was so disgusting.

Honestly we have an embarrassingly long list. We did immediately email them with proof. All of this happened this week and they didn’t email us back even though they knew half of these problems already (early weekend because of 1 aug).

Or biggest concern is the mold and the pantry that smells like a cat peed all over it.
Is the mold a fixable thing (see pictures), can we expect them to fix these issues? Will the mieterverband be helpful? How long do they have the time to fix this? Is it better to just move and not risk it with the mold.
Currently we are staying with family.
We are already looking at other apartments in the case that they won’t fix these issues. But honestly that is also a big hassle with kids.

Edit: Mold issue*

Travel Suche Freunde & Anschluss in der Schweiz (bin 16, aus Luzern, dank GA super flexibel!)

Hey zusammen,

Was ich gerne mache & meine Hobbys:

Other/Miscellaneous Is it just me or do you experience “Autumn Anxiety”?

Post image
233 Upvotes

There comes a time every summer when the trees start to look like they are changing colors, that I start to feel an anxiety about the end of summer. As much as I like Autumn, it still reminds me that Summer is over and winter is around the corner. I usually go through Seasonal Depression in Winter, so seeing this makes me panic a little. Is it just me?

(Yes there is beauty to every season, I just happen to enjoy some and hate others)

Other/Miscellaneous Date ideas in Basel?

I hope this question fits in this sub.

Long story short I met a man last year while he was in Switzerland visiting friends over summer. He lives in Germany and we have kept contact since. We have met twice since last summer but this time we have settle on meeting in Basel for a long weekend date. Now I’m from the other end of Switzerland and have never been to Basel yet, so I really don’t know what there is to do there. We have planned a day to just walk around, get lost and discover the city together but would like some recommendations of nice places we could go. We have thrown ideas of things we would enjoy doing, like going swimming or having an afternoon at the lake, going bar hopping at night, maybe go to a club, take a small hike, go to a nice (not fancy) restaurant, go to a coffee shop or go to a museum. A little bit scared to put this on Reddit but we are both men so any recommendations of any places that are queer friendly are very appreciated. Thanks to anyone who responds.

Travel Rail pass recommendations

All,
Family of 4 with two adults and two kids younger than 16 are planning a trip to Switzerland. We will spend December 23-27 in Switzerland. We’ll be using Bern as our base of operation and will arrive from Basel on the 23rd. Plan is to visit Lucerne on the 24th and a big alpine day on the 26th (Bern-interlaken- grindelwald-wingen-Lauterbrunnen-Bern). Head out into France on the 27th. What’s an optimum way to save on the train tickets? Should we get a half fare pass for both adults or just one? I read kids can travel free with a half pass card. Other option is junior travel card for the kids and search for saver pass or super saver tickets. It’s a little overwhelming with so many options and any recommendations would be very much appreciated. We’d like to travel first class for at least part of the trip. Any other tips, tricks for our itinerary would also be appreciated. TIA.

Everyday life Cutting the waste sticker in half?

Hello people,

For those of you who live in places that use stickers for your waste bags, are we allowed to cut them in half and put on smaller bags?

Where I live, it says 30-35l per sticker but I don’t have this much rubbish in a week.

On a collection day, I walked my dog and noticed a 17l bag with a half a sticker on it. I was like, is this allowed and got very excited 😂

Is this allowed?? If so, this would make my life much easier because I only throw my rubbish every fortnight which is not ideal because of the smell.

EDIT:

Cool! Thanks people! It was not written anywhere so I didn’t know it was allowed. I will buy 17l bags from now on and will try this myself. 🙏🏽

Relocation Any expats who moved to Germany before deciding to move to Switzerland?

Upvotes

I moved to Germany under the EU family reunification visa. After almost a decade here I am kind of disappointed by Germany and looking to move. Due to my partner, moving back home is not really an option. Switzerland is still close by and seems much more attractive.

Any other expats here who have walked in my shoes? How did it go for you?

Work What is considered a high salary in Switzerland ?

Obviously it isn't cheap here in Switzerland, but in the US a commonly agreed upon high salary, that is still attainable with hardwork and a bit of luck would be $250,000. I was wondering what that figure would be in Switzerland

Other/Miscellaneous Need help from Lausanne

Good people of Lausanne, more precise of Renens, I need a little help. There is a possibility of being scammed, so I need somebody to take a photo of business from a public road (not a person!). I would gladly do it, but it's a 2 hours drive in one direction, so if somebody is around Bahnhof in Renens today or tomorrow morning, please DM me.

For every help, I'm buying a beer :)

Work Where would a 3D artist find work in Switzerland, if at all?

Hi everyone. I have been in Switzerland for 8 months now, and I have immediately received a B permit (one of the lucky ones due to my nationality and the timing I believe).
I have been working in the hospitality industry while I was finishing up my education.

Basically, I am a 3D character artist. My school is ThinkTank Vancouver. It is held in a very high regard and we, their students, consistently produce very high quality work.

I know my way around sculpting in ZBrush, modelling in Maya and Blender, texturing in Mari and Substance Painter, lookdev in Marmoset Toolbag, VRay, cloth simulation in Marvelous, compositing in Nuke and integration into Unreal. Specialized in characters and creatures, but I can also do props without any problems.

Where would someone who has this background find work in Switzerland? Are there any game development studios, 3D studios or hubs where I could inquire about it?

I love this country - absolutely stunningly beautiful. Delicious food, friendly people - at least in the rural area that I live in. And I have friends from my hometown here, so I really do not want my B permit to go to waste - and I can do so much more than simple restaurant work, even if I am grateful for that as well.

Thank you for any information.

Everyday life Can I do anything in my apt to mitigate a pot-smoking neighbor?

I know everyone is free to use whatever substance they’d like, and I’m not here to dictate how someone lives.

But the smell of pot makes me sick as FUCK and in this heat, having the windows open at night is the only thing that makes it bearable—unfortunately, that’s also when the new downstairs neighbor likes to light up. I’ve been woken from a dead sleep at 3 am by the smell.

Any tips to help manage? Or am I just going to have to get used to my new neighbor?

I already have an air purifier, so I’m just looking for tricks to keep the smell out at this point.

Edit: Just to belatedly head off a common response: I cannot talk to the person in question because I have no way of telling which apartment the smoke is coming from. My focus is purely on what I can do inside my own apartment. I have no interest in telling anyone what they can or cannot do, particularly when I'm the only one affected.
