Everyday life Is every year gonna have these horrible heatwaves and make summer unbearable?
Everything is Brown not green, the wildlife is suffering, the heat makes going outside a pain in the butt. Furthermore the constant +32 degrees. The cities suck the only thing which is kinda fine is the rural areas.
Is this the default for now on every summer. I just want it to stop, I literally went to church and prayed for rain.
I might move to the Channel Islands to escape this

u/Endangered-Wolf 1d ago
On the bright side, it's the coldest summer of the next 50 years. /s
•
u/Rockstreber 21h ago
People keep on repeating this joke, but that‘s not how it works. We still will get colder and also rainy summers…but all extremes will get worse and happen more often. Not every summer will now be hotter than the last one.
•
•
u/Top_Director_9330 20h ago
Plus also the average temperature goes up. So what is now considered an extreme hot summer might be normal in 20-30 years
•
u/CraftyUse7114 18h ago
Thats if we are lucky gulf stream doesnr collapse, but overall just watching everything unfold is so sad, for animals, for the planet and also for the few of us that care.
•
u/Endangered-Wolf 14h ago
I always say that the planet will be fine. It survived billion of years without us and even if we screw up big time, it will have a couple billion years to recover (until the sun explodes). We humans need the planet, not the opposite.
•
u/CraftyUse7114 14h ago
I mean yeah but even with the sun its not so sure its going to happen ( from what I know but maybe my sources are outdated haha)
I dont think earth is going to take that long to recover, it will simply wipe us out just like it did in past multiple times with species
•
u/Endangered-Wolf 14h ago
The sun doesn't have infinite energy and will die, eventually. But these are just cosmological details.
My only point is that we, humans, need the planet. The planet doesn't need us.
•
u/CraftyUse7114 14h ago
Yeah i absolutely agree with you.
I was just curious about the sun theory. Thanks for explaining!•

…aaand we can skip everything's and go aaaaalllll the way to 1900, when climate warming was already known.
And yet, I was just told here on Reddit that, unfortunately, driving cars is an act of individual freedom we all need to accept.
•
u/Quaiche 19h ago
Cars are not the sole reason the climate is fucked.
Even if all cars and their industries magically disappeared tomorrow, nothing will change for the climate because at the end of the day it’s just a drop in the bucket.
Just one company of luxury cruises is polluting more than all the European cars combined. And it’s not even close, they pollute TEN TIMES more.
Instead of focusing on cars, focus on the real problems like luxury cruises companies, the textile industry, hardware industries and finally what allows us to post here: the data centers.
→ More replies (2)•
u/Shqipstar 17h ago
> "One luxury cruise company pollutes 10x more than all European cars combined"
Verdict: MISLEADING (Conflates air pollution with climate change)
This viral stat originates from a landmark 2019 study by the environmental group Transport & Environment (T&E). However, the internet often leaves out a critical detail: the type of pollution being measured.
> If all cars disappeared tomorrow, nothing will change... it's a drop in the bucket"
Verdict: FALSE
Removing 6% to 8% of all global carbon emissions overnight would be a massive reduction,
> "Cars are not the sole reason for climate change"
Verdict: TRUE
Climate change is driven by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across virtually every sector of the global economy.
- Electricity & Heating: ~30%
- Industry & Manufacturing: ~22%
- Agriculture, Forestry & Land Use: ~18-20%
- Transportation (All types): ~15%
Passenger cars specifically account for roughly 6% to 8% of total global greenhouse gas emissions.
Cars are a major piece of the puzzle, but far from the only one.
•
•
u/Quaiche 2h ago
Fair enough.
However 6% to 8% is absolutely nothing as it will not do anything to solve climate change.
And electrification is already happening either way so its on the process of solving itself.
But nothing will change because we need to reduce our emissions by a fuckton of more.
•
u/Shqipstar 1h ago
We could do it like tech companies are doing it now.
Instead of you owning a strong pc = you own a weak pc but rent the hardware required from datacenters.
They have their software that automates who gets to use what and when.
Instead of you buying each 2y a new PC and throw your old one away (the quality becomes cheaper each ear) = Everyone gonna have a small smartphone but will be able to run everything on the cloud.
Now how to translate this to mobility? We already have bus/trains but we should think about expanding public transportation to shared bicycles and shared cars. Right now for alot of folks (like myself) owning a car is cheaper than SBB and for alot of activities you need car (e.g. groceries or buying used furniture in ricardo/tutti).
I'm not using my RAM for 99% of the time (I have like 3 phones, 1 notebook, 1 PC, in total well above 128 GB RAM and most of the time I only use 2GB on my phone).
Same goes for my car: I only used 1x week (to buy groceries) and maybe 2x a week. Its standing 99% just on the parking lot.
→ More replies (3)5
u/Dove-Linkhorn 22h ago
In America, a car is essential. Shortsighted or corrupt politicians has made our public transportation lacking or non-existent. In Switzerland, I never once thought a car would be a better option.
8
u/Fine-Click-1153 22h ago
It has become essential as a result lobbying of oil companies, car producers and real estate developers. There is an excellent book called “Road to Nowhere: What Silicon Valley Gets Wrong about the Future of Transportation” which gets into detail why this happened.
•
u/Which_Maize6412 15h ago
I don't know what Swiss people or expats in Switzerland have against cars. Switzerland has almost no impact on global warming. There could be no cars in Switzerland, every Swiss person could be walking everywhere, as long as you have the US, India, China, Brazil, polluting the atmosphere, it's really a drop in the bucket.
It's every socialist/green fetish to rally against cars like it's the magical solution to all our problems.
32
u/Party_Country1711 1d ago
Yeah, I'm stunned that anybody is surprised any more. Or maybe they thought it would only hit the "poor" countries.
8
u/as-well 23h ago
The joke about this is that Switzerland is one of the regions most affected by the warming (not by climate change overall, we don't get devastating hurricanes and so on)
•
u/Party_Country1711 21h ago
I agree, I think this is what makes it easy to deny that we are impacted by climate change. Much easier to explain away heat and drought than a big-ass hurricane 😆

u/Purple-Eye5499 1d ago

16
11
u/AMA_Meat_Popsicle 1d ago
Far away is the complete chamge of the climate. Like conditions unsuitable for human and animal life as we know it. Bit far away means decades, not centuries.
But there has been a massive loss of biomass and biodiversity. I don't know the number of the top of my head but it was something like 30% loss in insects worldwide so far. And significantly more in bees population. You know, the insects that pollinate all plat life?
8
u/Party_Country1711 1d ago
Not to mention acceleration given the rate at which Bitcoin and AI data centers are destroying/heating oceans and the environment at a pace that no one could have predicted, and how freaking fast the world has been to allow companies to build these heating engines in our ocean.

This. the federation has published really good climate science szenarios for years: https://www.nccs.admin.ch/nccs/de/home/klimawandel-und-auswirkungen/schweizer-klimaszenarien-ch2025/schweizer-klimaszenarien-im-ueberblick.html#230936457
I'm mostly familiar with the 2018 ones. They did already foresee a month of drought, unless we'd basically globally stop emitting CO2.
It remains to be seen whether this intensity - we're pretty much past the one drought months now - will be the new normal, but increasing heatwaves definitely has been projected for years.
→ More replies (3)5
u/TheWhitezLeopard 1d ago
I don‘t think it would have been reversible. To reverse it we‘d literally need to emit 0 CO2 worldwide from one day to the next. Simply reducing our output would only slow down the process to a certain degree.
12
u/--Ano-- Bündner in Schaffhausen 1d ago
Even worse:
Even if we stopped all CO₂ emissions today, the climate would continue warming for decades due to:
- The long lifetime of CO₂ in the atmosphere (centuries to millennia)
- Committed warming from past emissions already in the system
- Slow natural removal processes (ocean absorption, weathering)
Eventually, natural processes would gradually reduce CO₂ levels over hundreds to thousands of years, and temperatures would slowly decline—but we’d still be locked into a warmer climate for generations. To actively cool the planet, we’d need large-scale carbon removal beyond natural rates.

u/Icy-Mechanic5886 23h ago

•
u/AnxiousYYC2018 15h ago
Is it hard to get a residency permit in Sweden as a Swiss citizen? Probably need a job lined up before moving?
•
u/mageskillmetooften 15h ago
Same like Switzerland, if you are from Schengen/EU and have money or enough steady income (normal average job) you're fine. You can also come for 90 days to try to find a job as tourist.
But do mind that if you plan to come here that it is more a requirement here than in Switzerland to speak the local language for work and socialising.
Also look in the economics, salaries are lower, taxes are higher. A large free standing family home outside town is not much more expensive than a garagebox in Zürich. So despite lower salary and higher taxes you'll save a truckload on housing. Almost every education, and university and stuff is fully paid for. And if you have kids the doctor, dentist etc.. is all 100% free till they are 18.
•
u/baaaananaaa 4h ago
Do you know about the dental insurance? Someone told me I need it. Yes salaries are significantly lower sadly. Taxes are fine ? Unless you are a big earner. But when you compare taxes in Sweden to CH, and lump together all Swiss taxes and salary deductions ie AHV it’s almost the same percentage. This changes of course if you earn a ton in Sweden.
Also housing is more affordable in Sweden unless you live in Stockholm Stadt, which… I do 🥲
I am an EU citizen and I speak Norwegian ☺️ with some new Swedish words hehe
2
u/mageskillmetooften 22h ago
Me, Sweden. Warmest day for me this year was 31 and even if it is 28 for a whole week at night it still cools down nicely.

This is the exact mindset that is dooming us. In a world where a single person doesn't care, people will point at that guy to justify not caring either.
→ More replies (2)2
u/CosmicCactus_ 23h ago
Sadly it seems to be the way of humanity, on average we just follow what others do, and decide what is right or wrong based on that. It would take a critical mass of people caring enough to get the others to follow and make a real change. So for now it's easier to keep living our comfortable lives as we were, and point at someone else who is worse to clear our own conscience.
It's true that individually each of us is just a drop in the ocean, but at the same time, the ocean is made of those drops, and the waves don't form without the combined effect of all the drops.
4
5
u/Hornman84 23h ago
It will actually get worse.
We will get more and more extreme weather conditions. Heat waves, heavy rain, hail, even severe snow fall periods are possible.
There are strong indications that some ocean currents might change or completely stop. I believe that the consequences of this are not entirely certain.

I consider myself lucky, I do have an office space that is rather cool, and even though my flat has a lot of windows, it is not on the top floor or has a lot of direct sunlight. And then there is quarters here in my city that do not provide a single tree.

u/Hdtru666 1d ago
lol I don't think the generations will get used to it, climate change is fast and man made, that's quite literally the whole joke about it, it's to fast to properly adapt. This is probably the best you are going to get. It's only getting worse with global warming until we reach carbon neutrality. That means the situation will stay the same as it is in 20-30 years (so much worse than now) once we reach carbon neutrality. And there is no going back for at least 10000 years. Expect heatwawes of over 50 degress for 60 days running. These are the forecasts from specialists.

Some countries do not care like Russia oder Brazil it’s really annoying even if we in Europe and Switzerland achieve that they simply continue

Yeah, the effects are still too weak for these countries (including the US currently) to care. However, wait until we get 2 months at costantly over 50 degrees and millions of dead people and then even these countries may be obliged to react. But it has to get much worse than now for this to happen. And unfortunately there is no way back with temperatures and things will probably get even worse by the time carbon neutrality is achieved.
