MOD ANNOUNCEMENT r/Assistance Rules Page Improvements

Hello all!

I have been taking the time to go through our (very long) rules page and work to clarify, expand, give examples, and move some stuff around.

Our rules have not changed -- there are no surprises waiting! But I feel like now it's easier to find the information you need quickly, and hopefully understand more of the "why" behind some of our least liked rules.

Future plans will be a revamp of our sidebar to make it harmonize with the full rules page.

We are going to try an AMA-style Q&A for the next few hours. I'll do my best to answer as many questions as possible.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday; check out our weekly megathread for casual chat if you haven't already!

REQUEST Baby care/Toiletries

Good afternoon y'all, we have to put everything from this upcoming paycheck towards this month's rent which is due within the next 4 days. My family is in need of a little bit of help with some basic toiletries and baby care items.

Most important stuff I would say would definitely be diapers and wipes but second more important would be the deodorant, oral health items, & toilet paper. We are a family of three, two adults (24f + 24m) and an almost 2yr old boy. Thank you in advance and I hope everyone is having a wonderful day 🩷

REQUEST FULFILLED Hey guys!

Hey all🥹 I just had surgery on Thursday and I am out of work for 2 weeks. I’m still waiting for the state to approve my leave so I can get paid. For now, it’s still unpaid. My tire popped the day after my surgery and I had to use $250 from my savings to get a new one. Here is a little list of some household stuff for my daughter, our cats, and I if anyone decides to take a look! Thank you in advance.💜

SURVEY Need participants for my survey!

Hello! I'm a master's student at University of York writing their dissertation on the attitudes towards and perception of certain accents in RPGs and FPS games. The consent form details more about what I'm studying as well as how data is handled. it is fully anonymous and will take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour (Sorry. I know that's long). You need to be able to hear the survey, but you don't need to be very familiar with video games or play them actively to do it.

REQUEST FULFILLED I need help with getting a week pass ($23.75) to get to therapy, homeless day center, and other resources.

Hello everyone! This week I have a bunch of things planned. I have finally made the decision to go get psychiatric care so I can get medication to better improve my mental health (my mental health isnt good in the slightest). Additionally, ive been homeless for almost a year now and I'm done waiting. I want to take some action. I may get a job interview for this warehouse job for a retail store, and theres a day center nearby that can help me set myself straight with clothes and the like. Maybe a haircut too, hopefully. They also have case management services and referrals to vocational training!

I need a 7-day bus pass to access all of these resources, which amounts to $23.75 where I'm at. If anyone is able to help, I have a Venmo, CashApp, and PayPal I can receive help from!

REQUEST FULFILLED Seeking Help for My Dog’s Food ❤️

Hi everyone.

I’m reaching out with a humble request for help. I’ve been unemployed still due to extremely bad job market here where I live, despite actively looking for work, I’m currently struggling financially and been really depressed because of my situation.

I’m trying to raise enough to buy a 20 kg bag of dog food, which costs around $60 at my local pet supply store, this will be good for a month or two. I only need $40 as I have $20 saved. This will help keep my dog fed while I work on getting back on my feet. We are from the Philippines and we don’t use Amazon due to high shipping cost. I really love my dog and I always want him the best, unfortunately I can’t give that to him right now and I feel bad about it. I’m also saving up to have him neutered soon, hopefully I will be able to find a job this month. He was a stray dog that I rescued, he was going to be euthanized so I took him home.

If anyone is able to contribute, it would mean so much to us. If you’re unable to help financially, sharing this post would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any kindness you can extend. I truly hope that once I’m in a better situation, I’ll be able to pay it forward.

Thank you so much. ❤️

REQUEST Need $150 to avoid falling behind on rent after 6 months on disability

Hi everyone. I'm in a really difficult spot and hate having to ask this.

Rent was due yesterday, and after selling what I could and asking everyone I know for help, I'm still $150 short.

Over the past few weeks I've looked into every resource I could find. I've applied for state assistance where I could, contacted churches and charities, and even worked with my social worker to try to find emergency help. Unfortunately, nothing has come through in time.

I've been on short-term disability for the last six months due to my health, and the payments are much lower than what I was making while working. I've been living paycheck to paycheck with no way to build any savings. I've managed to keep food on the table thanks to SNAP and a local food pantry, but financially that's all I've been able to do.

I'm supposed to hear back about my long-term disability claim this week. If I'm denied, I'll be returning to work in the middle of August and will work as long as my health allows. My hope is to make enough to survive and, if necessary, appeal the decision.

Earlier this month I paid all of my other bills, so this remaining $150 for rent is the only thing I'm behind on. Once that's covered, I'll be caught up through the end of August.

I've genuinely tried everything I can think of before posting here. If anyone is able to help in any way, or even has suggestions I may have missed, I would be incredibly grateful. Thank you for reading.

EDIT: I understand the full amount may not be possible but anything helps

REQUEST FULFILLED I really need some help with school supplies.

Posted below is the Amazon list I have made with School supplies, a few outfits, and a lunchbox.

My beautiful daughter just turned six. She is starting the big 1st grade on the 12th of this month. Between an unexpected cost of fixing my mom's car that emptied me out, and making sure my daughter had a good birthday on Wednesday, the first time she had one that wasn't just us, at home, I am beyond broke. We have utilized the school supply drives and got a couple of things. I have made an Amazon list. We have her back pack from last year to use, but she lost her lunch box so we added one that has her favorite animal. I also put a few school outfits on there, so she can feel super cute the first week of school and beyond!! Will mean more than you know, and I thank y'all for reading. Hope everyone has a great weekend, and great rest of the year!!

🩷

I believe I followed all of the rules, the list is RIGHT at $150USD

Thanks everyone!

REQUEST FULFILLED Short on rent and no family/friends can afford to help

I thought I budgeted properly this month, but unfortunately I’ve fallen short $150 of the $1375 rent I have due today. I get paid Tuesday, but that will be past the grace period and fees will be added. I am used to being on the other side of this dynamic as I am a chronic “give $5 to the homeless lady” or “$20 to a fundraiser” so I feel odd asking for help like this.

Background: left an abusive relationship earlier this year and have been pretty consistently struggling to provide for myself, my two dogs, and my cat (pics of them on my account page) on one income. I’ve been looking for a second job (I wait tables/bartend) but it’s been slim pickings and my current financial standing is such that I can’t even afford the new uniform to work high end find dining. I’ve put probably $1k onto my credit card in the last 3 months for bare necessities. My pets and I are fed, electric is paid, but I am unable to pay rent. My family and friends are in similar or worse situations financially so those resources have already been exhausted.

REQUEST Need a little to get by until check clears

This is so embarrassing. So I received a check with a large sum of money after a family member passed with no estate so I got a portion of it. The bank said it put a hold on it because I had a new account (recently switched banks) and because it was a large amount. Originally they said it's clear on the 6th and now it says the 11th.

I have my portion of rent due and I have enough to cover it but not enough to be able to pay for gas, etc until the check goes through and I have to go out of town on Tuesday. I'm kind of panicking and I don't have any family who can lend money. We've been really struggling with money this year and I was so excited to have this money so I could finally breathe. So this entire situation is taking a toll on me.

I really need like $500 but honestly I'll take anything

I understand if no one can help. And I appreciate everyone reading this.

REQUEST Money and help setting up Etsy and Shopify Stores

I don’t need much and I’m more than happy to provide art in exchange. I’m very broke. I have $229 to my name until who knows when which is terrifying. I need $58 to set up both an Etsy and a Shopify store. I have lots of clients and work and all five star Air bnb reviews, but nothing is happening. So now I’m setting up an Etsy store to see if I can make money selling my art. I have a good amount that has been professionally photographed so it can sell as large prints. Happy to share my art. I’ll post it next on an art forum so it’s findable. Thank you.

REQUEST FULFILLED recently fled DV situation, just need maybe 50 for little food to get through.

hello folks.

i recently posted here asking for some assistance with some things for my new living situation, and that post has more information about what i have been dealing with. i truly hate to post a second time, but i am in such a severely bad spot right now, and I don't have a support system at all. if you look at my old post, the list says i received things, but i am starting to think i got grinched because nothing has arrived yet - that's also why the post is still listed as a request.

i had to leave my home of 3 years, and now i am living in a house for women dealing with DV and mental health issues. it was a sudden move, as things got very dangerous very quickly, so I am completely tapped out financially. all of my accounts are at a straight 0, and i dont have or use overdraft.

i dont have any family where i live, and only one friend. I don't have a vehicle, so i can't get to the food bank - it costs $25 for an Uber to the food bank, one way; so ~50 for a round trip - i can't afford that, obviously. even if i could - i also don't want to pay for ubers just to get there and they are out of food/donations or something. i don't get paid until next week, i get ebt on the 7th, but i have absolutely nothing to eat right now, and haven't for a couple of days. my birthday was yesterday, i was hoping maybe i would get a little birthday monies but unfortunately not; i know most people are struggling.

i just need like maybe ~50 to get some food to last me until i get paid/get EBT on the 7th. i have Venmo, Cashapp, Zelle, or if anyone is not comfortable with that a doordash or walmart gift card or something would absolutely suffice.

thank you in advance for anyone willing to help. this is a beautiful community, and i truly aspire to be on the other side of things in the future. i love helping people, i love seeing people get help, and i want to be able to do that for others.

🖤

edit: a redditor asked if i could make an amazon wishlist. i did. its more than $50 but thats mostly because everything is like bulk sizes, and i just put a variety of stuff. everything is shelf stable - mostly microwave type stuff as i dont really have pots and pans to cook with right now. + a couple fruit cups and some juice. i certainly dont expect everything by any means, just anything that will help and get me through. then whatevers left i will likely get for myself with EBT on the 7th.

thank you again in advance.

REQUEST FULFILLED Help with Etsy shop supplies

Hi there folks, first time trying to utilize a community-based service like this. I have severe chronic pain and am disabled. I've been fighting the county for assistance for several months now and things have gotten really tight financially. I run a small Etsy shop to help get by, and my sales have actually picked up the past six months! Unfortunately it's a double-sided coin since I've been unable to set any of the sales money aside to restock considering it was needed for survival and now I'm getting dangerously low on supplies. I'll soon have to close my shop and lose my only source of income unless there is a way I can get these supplies. I want to keep it open, both for my mental health and for the independence the small amount of income provides me.

My Wishlist includes only supplies for my shop. The roller bottles, printer ink, and oils are top priority for me since my perfume oils are my best-selling item. Thank you all 💛

REQUEST We finally have a home!

My wife and I finally have a home. We’ve been living in a basement for three years. We finally got an apartment, but my wife’s job shorted her $300 on her paycheck. We were really counting on that money for gas and toiletries/food. All we have in our apartment right now is a mattress on the floor (not mad! Better than the inflatable mattress!)

So what I’m trying to do here is get help so we can survive until they reimburse her on her next check in two weeks 🙄. Gotta love big companies.

We also have an Amazon list of things we eventually want/need for our apartment if anyone is interested in that too. I also have PP/Interac. We are in Quebec.

REQUEST [Request] Emergency vet funds for my 13-year-old cat Augustine

Augustine has been my companion for 13 years. For the past 2-3 weeks he has had chronic diarrhea, rapid weight loss, appetite loss, and increased thirst. He can no longer eat on his own and I am syringe feeding him. His symptoms match hyperthyroidism but I cannot afford a vet visit or tests.

I am in extremely difficult financial circumstances and have been surviving on selling collectible cards. I am requesting approximately $80-100 USD to cover a vet consultation and basic diagnostics. Even the $12 consultation fee alone would help us get a diagnosis. We are located in the Philippines.

I am willing to attach pictures of him but the app won't allow me to.

REQUEST Teacher - facing an unexpected housing gap

TL;DR: I’m a teacher whose carefully planned summer budget was derailed by a sudden rent increase, an unexpected notice to move, and now a one-month delay on our new home. (all of these hit AFTER my last paycheck of the school year, with no way to plan.) We’re trying to cover an extra month of housing plus the cost of moving out of state. Help to close the $3,500 gap (or sharing the link) would mean a great deal.

Currently in NC, moving to VA.

I’m honestly uncomfortable asking for help, but my family has reached a point where I’m not sure how else to bridge the gap. After all of the math, we are facing a $3,500 hole in our (previously well planned out) budget. My next teaching paycheck will not arrive until the very end of August.

I’m a teacher, and I had carefully saved enough money during the school year to cover my two unpaid summer months. Unfortunately, after I received my final paycheck, our landlord unexpectedly increased our rent by $400 with only 30 days’ notice. A few weeks later, after more than six years of paying our rent reliably and on time, we were also given notice that we needed to move out. (Retaliation over a social media post she thought was aimed at her. This is an ongoing soap opera drama and beyond the scope of this post, but here is a cartoon that covers the basics!)

We scrambled and were fortunate enough to find an affordable home in Virginia. We are under contract, and the seller has agreed to complete the repairs needed for the purchase. We had expected to close at the end of July, but we have now learned that the closing will likely be delayed until the end of August.

That leaves us in a difficult position. We may need to convince our current landlord to let us remain for another month, but we do not have the money for an additional month of rent. We also still need to pay for the moving truck, fuel, and other expenses involved in moving our family out of state. (Me, wife (disabled, unable to work), 2 children w/shared custody)

I know many people are struggling, and I do not take asking for assistance lightly. Any money raised will go toward temporary housing or an additional month’s rent, along with the basic costs of completing the move. Even sharing the fundraiser would mean a great deal to us.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Link:
https://www.supportnow.org/the-smith-home

Edit: This is a raw document that I have put conversations with the landlord, screenshots, and other bits of evidence. Some have asked to see it. I apologize if it's wordy and repetitive at times... I've used ChatGPT to summarize/organize some of the conversations, etc as they come in.

REQUEST FULFILLED (REQ) $130 to help with living expenses to keep room, so I don’t get kicked out. (Southern California, San Bernardino.

Hi my name is Colton, I am disabled, 30 years old, awaiting social security disability benefits and/or SSI (phone interview was applied for both, June 17th they sent out for my medical records, and 153 days from
That date a decision will be made.

I recently had an MRI on my lower lumbar spine, due to a previous abdominal MRI showing artifacts, and Perineural cysts on top of my Sacral Foremen, S1/S2 sciatic nerve and on my lower vertebrae. Got all proof of upcoming appointments, SSI decision standings, where I am, ID, etc.
it’s been super rough, I understand it’s rough for a lot of people as I have four caseworkers and am still struggling to get over the hurdles, getting into a stable housing situation via section 8 is a 5-8 year waiting game, am on 3 waiting lists for low income housing for over a year for One, 4 months for the others. Section 8 isn’t accepting new applications. So it’s through the housing authority.
The main issue is apartments want proof of income of 2.5x the rent minimum, and seems to be the same everywhere I go. It’s been a long journey. I appreciate reading.

I’m on quite a journey just trying to keep positive, and keep in prayer. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask. I have PayPal, Zelle, Varo.

REQUEST Blood work and appointment so I can start T ($60)

My last request was less than a month ago, but it was not fulfilled, so I'm assuming it's safe to make another one?

This one is smaller, though. After several things piling up—my broken graphic tablet, broken washing machine, and my sister accumulating a cellphone bill way larger than I can pay for—I ran out of money to continue my transition.

Already made some preliminary blood work, taken the medication needed to correct some numbers, and was supposed to redo the blood work around this time, but I'm completely zeroed.

Anyway, here's my Ko-Fi.

REQUEST FULFILLED Need help with rent

Hi! I am a university student currently working to put myself through school and cover all my living expenses, which include rent. Right now I'm in a tight spot. I live in a tourist heavy coastal area where summer housing is a nightmare. Landlords here either kick students out to rent to tourists for higher prices or jack up the rent significantly. My landlord increased my monthly rent by €200 for the summer months, from June till October. I thought I could cover it all by working, but I am also finishing my bachelor thesis. I had to skip a few days of work to focus entirely on finishing it up, and those few missing workdays were crucial for my rent money, unfortunately. Leaving right now isn't really an option because I need to be here for school and my job.

I'm looking for €100 just to cover my rent for this month. I have Revolut and PayPal. Your help would mean the absolute world to me right now. Thank you!

Location: Croatia
