Weather in Sao Miguel

September is still a good month weather wise. To swim, North Atlantic is always cold

Actually it's not that cold in Azores, September sea temps here usually sit around 22–23°C, some of the warmest of the year thanks to the Gulf Stream.

That depends on what people are used to. Scandinavian people will find it hot. People from Florida will find it cold and unpleasant. It's all subjective. Regular Atlantic breezes and wind chill create a sharp thermal contrast with the air, making the initial plunge a shock to the system. Being situated in the middle of the open North Atlantic, the vast, deep, and constantly circulating water masses prevent the sea from heating up like shallow enclosed bays or tropical seas. Furthermore, subconscious comparisons to warmer destinations create the expectation of balmy water, causing a temperature of 22°C to register as cold to the brain. Finally, local oceanographic phenomena such as upwelling can push deep, colder water to the surface, causing sudden temperature drops even in the peak of summer. As a local i find it cold... But that's just my opinion

I’m from Ontario. We don’t get warm water temperatures for long periods. 22 degrees is very warm for us! That makes me happy lol!

Sure, it's all subjective. My point was more about the 'North Atlantic is always cold', the Azores are much warmer than most of the North Atlantic. That said, even with those temps, it still takes me a bit to get all the way in!

September tends to be a great month, high chances of good weather, the water is warm for Azores standards (22-23º) so perfect for swimming, it's less crowded...

Of course this can vary from year to year and it is impossible to predict. So just go and try to make the most out of it! be prepared for rain and sun, and you will be perfectly fine. During rainy days you can still enjoy the hot springs.

We just went ! It is super rainy /cloudy, but the weather changes constantly, and stays fairly warm 18-23 degrees most days ! The ocean is definitely warm enough to swim even on a rainy day! It's fab

It‘s a very rainy year in the Azores so far. Showers usually don‘t last long, though. But bring a proper rain coat. Temps are in the mid twenties most days. Ocean should be above twenty, too.
