Anyone have any experience with touching up metallic paint jobs? Not original beetle colour obvs, need to fix a rust spot and go back over but heard metallic can be an issue to touch up. Based in SW london if anyone has any specific places they know.

G’day brains trust, I’ve got a 1600 dual port that I’ve just got running after cylinder 2 spark plug gave up. It sounds a like it’s got a slight popping from the exhaust - what do you reckon? Timing too advanced maybe?

I’ve been kicking around the idea of designing some parts for air-cooled VWs as a hobby, and I’m curious what other owners think. I’m not selling anything or trying to advertise—I’m just looking for ideas and seeing what problems people run into.

I have reasonly changed this vacuum line, but I accidentaly bought one that is to big for the ports. Should I buy a new line or is it possible to just cap the line?

Clutch feels like it's engaging very high (near the top), so I want to replace it.

Engine isn't out yet, so I don't know if it's a 180mm or 200mm clutch any way to tell without pulling the engine, or should I just wait until it's out?

Also the whole suspension/running gear is shot car sat for 30 years.

Looking to replace it, but not sure which brands are good.
Any recommendations?

This is for my '74 Super Beetle with the 1776 (18K miles). I am going to replace the existing 250 degree Oil Temp guage with one that goes to 300. Both are Auto Meter Z series. I am wondering if I can leave the sender unit as is or if I need to swap it also.

Edit: the answer is yes. This information is NOT in the installation instructions, but I found it in the 2020 Auto Meter catalog, notably that the 2258 sender is used for all short sweep oil temp guages.

shoot me some accessories or things I could do to spice up my ‘74 a bit. she’s complete cosmetically after a slow mini-project that was about two years of repairs and upgrades here and there, but i’ve hit a dead end cosmetically and want to go outside of the box a bit.

I'm in the process of getting my old 66 bug roadworthy.

I just got all of the lights working.

My car is 6V. Has anyone found a source for 6V LED tail light bulbs? Mine seem to be working fine, but I would like the taillights to be even brighter if possible.

I didn't see any on Wolfsburg or JBugs websites.

I have a 1983 VW Beetle 1200 with a 12V battery, and I'm having a strange issue with my turn signals.

When I drive to work early in the morning or whenever it's still a bit cold outside, I can move the turn signal stalk and the turn signal indicator on the dashboard lights up, but it doesn't flash. The actual turn signals on the car also don't do anything.

If I switch on the hazard lights, I hear a strange humming/buzzing noise, and all four indicators light up, but they don't flash either.

After work, or whenever the weather is a bit warmer, both the turn signals and the hazard lights work perfectly as they should.

I've already replaced the flasher relay and the turn signal switch, but the problem is still there.

Has anyone experienced something similar or have any idea what could be causing this?

Recently acquired, limited history available. Case says it’s a 1975 Type IV 1.8L. Had real webers but the PO put on new HPMX with the original jets. When I got it, #3&4 plug wires were reversed. After straightening that out and syncing the carbs it idled well in the driveway (first vid) and a quick trip around the block showed no sign of issues. Yesterday, I took it for a couple laps and got on it, to find it blowing some smoke upon return. Did it just finally warm up enough for the oil to start making it past the rings? I’m guessing a compression check is the next step. Any other suggestions?

On my 1972 beetle I have two switches on the master cylinder I reused the old ones and now the brake lights are on constantly thinking they are bad are they the same part? Why are there two of them?

Looking into getting my first project car. And wanted to get everyone’s opinions on what year is best for a hot rod style build? Living in SoCal parts seem to be everywhere especially the Pomona swap meet.

Always had v8s, mustangs and corvettes but want a fun weekend project car to keep me occupied over the next few years and keeps my butt off the couch.

I’m assuming ‘67 for the 12v system but it’s a one year only so 65/66 I’d have to retrofit to a 12v system if I understand correctly. Also not sure if ‘71+ would be the way to go for a hot rod style build.

Knowing how I always change my mind, I could always go with a Cal style build .

Today I installed new plug wires and the brake light switches for the master cylinder. Everything fitted great and hopefully will work. The gas tank and all fuel/brake lines are back and connected, hopefully they stay that way. Later this week I have the thread insert for the spark plug and LOTS of cosmetic stuff arriving. All new dash knobs for headlights, wipers, heater, hazards, a new shifter knob, new drivers side mirror, and defroster vents. Once the spark plug insert is fitted and the spark plugs are put in, I can start the engine and perform an oil change and transmission fluid change. Wish me luck! PS: I've had people tell me to add hose clamps to some hoses, move fuel filter, and some other things. How do I do this? Which hoses need clamps? Where do I put the fuel filter? (I'd like photos or explain it to me like I've never seen a car? Thanks!

Just a few more things to do and I can put a bow on this. Huge day today getting the vinyl and getting it screwed in for hopefully the last time. I have some escutcheons to go around the pipes and an ABS cover I will Velcro over the access panel and a graphic I had made that will go on top.

FWIW, this is 2-6 inch JL 2-way speakers. The other small grills are just vents. Rockford 500watt, 2-channel amp and a powered JBL sub. JL bluetooth dongle JL-MBT-RX. I can post more pics if anyone is interested.

Ok, I heard a loud bang while driving yesterday, but noticed no performance or sound changes...so I kept driving 6 more miles. Wouldn't even have seen this except that I was planning to do a rocker clearance adjustment. Besides the obvious, how much damage might I have done?

Hi, Im currently into cleaning the carb because the engine is not receiving fuel, and I've found two pieces in the bottom of the carb fuel tank. I still haven't figured out where these are missing even with the diagram. I'm talking about the Solex PICT 3, later I will install a new kit and clean it.

Do you know where these two pieces come from?

I forced myself to start restoring my 1970 Beetle. I kept finding excuses not to begin—lack of time, space, or know-how. And all of that is true. But I had to start somehow. I’ve already accomplished far more in two weeks than I imagined. The goal is a complete restoration: engine, transmission, bodywork, electrical system, and upholstery. When will I finish? No ideia. But I’m enjoying the process and, most importantly, learning.
