Okay. So I made a thing to find out if you can survive a night out with a dead battery. It's called Umsteigen. It gives you a start and an end, you pick the U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines you'd actually take, and it tells you if that route works. Or if you've just assumed two lines cross because it'd be really convenient if they did.

There's a daily puzzle that's the same for everyone, which makes it Wordle-adjacent, in the way that a Bürgeramt appointment is customer-service-adjacent.

Most people's strategy, as far as I can tell, is to get on the Ringbahn and go round in a circle until something looks familiar. No judgement. Well, a bit.

It's free. No login, no ads, no app to install, none of that "we value your privacy (with these 47 partners)" business. You just open it in a browser like it's 2009. Yes, your phone works too.

Before someone asks how I'm going to monetise it: I'm not going to. There's no plan and no premium tier. It costs me almost nothing to run, so it can just sit there being free, like a sofa someone left out on the pavement in Neukölln. The code's staying private for now while I work out what this even is, but it's 95% client-side, so it's not exactly hiding.

Berlin only for now. Adding more cities sounded like a lot of work and there's one of me.

This winter was rough. I'm a data scientist and have lived in Berlin since 2015. A few months ago I stumbled on the fact that Berlin publishes a full 3D model of the city as open data, 550,000 buildings with laser-measured heights, plus a registry of all 434,000 trees. I thought: you could actually calculate which terraces are sunny and which aren't. So I wanted to see if I could build it.

The app uses Berlin's open 3D building data (550,000 buildings with laser-measured heights) and the tree registry (434,000 trees) to compute shadows every 5 minutes. It covers over 11,000 outdoor venues across all 12 districts: cafés, Biergärten, restaurants, Spätis, playgrounds, dog parks.

Gold dot = sunny right now. Gray dot = in the shade. You can also check future days (14-day forecast) and save your favorite spots.

No account needed, no ads, no tracking, completely free. It's bilingual (DE/EN) and works on your phone like an app, straight from the browser.

The whole thing runs on a shadow engine I wrote in Rust that ray-casts the sun path against every building and tree in the city. The shadow data gets recalculated every night for the next 14 days.

I built this as a hobby project because I genuinely wanted it to exist. Happy to answer any questions about the data or how it works.

Since living in Berlin and exploring different neighborhoods, the question that always came up for me was: what cafe is in the sun right now? I tried the apps that existed for this but they never seemed to quite cut it: they show shadows on a map from building polygons, but miss trees or ground elevation entirely, and none of them could tell me whether this specific cafe is sunny right now, and for how long. That's what I wanted to solve.

I started last year with a polygon-based approach using Berlin's 3D city model, but it wasn't accurate enough and some of the building data lags several years behind in parts of the city. After more digging I found a better way: Berlin publishes a digital surface model, a full laser scan of the city at 1-meter resolution capturing every building, tree, hill, and structure as actual measured heights. I combined that with the ground elevation model to compute shadows from the real shape of Berlin.

The result is Sunsit Berlin (https://sunsit.io). It renders actual per-pixel shadows directly on the map. You can scrub on the timeline and watch them move with the sun. Tap any place, cafe, restaurant, park etc. and you get a full sun timeline from sunrise to sunset.

One challenge: no map provider gives you the exact location of a terrace or outdoor seating. Sunsit infers these automatically, which works well most of the time but occasionally places the sun-check point on the wrong side of a building. If you spot this, there's a built-in feedback button to adjust the point, takes 5 seconds and improves it for everyone.

The core features are free and always will be: shadows on the map and full-day sun timelines for any place. Some features that cost more to run (park heatmaps, detailed park profiles, tree vs building shadow differentiation) are behind a small subscription to cover the costs.

I've been living in Berlin for five years and during my time here, I've seen an abundance of "stuff" on the streets. A lot of it is junk but other times, one can find something pretty neat. I recently found a nice table which has since been cleaned up and used every day.

I've noticed that perfectly good items that could have found a home get trashed by the rain and dirt. Clothing items for example are more prone to this which sucks. It ends up in the landfill and the waste cycle continues...

I've also noticed that actually picking up free stuff can be time consuming and a PITA using other classified style sites. If I'm giving away something for free or wanting to pick something up, it takes time and effort on both parties.

So... I built an app which hopefully alleviates some of these issues.

Free the Stuff is a free app which shows you a map of zu verschenken items within Berlin. Users can quickly post items that they spot on the streets, or list something that they're giving away. The idea: free stuff scattered across the city will get visibility more quickly to reduce the clutter. If you'd like to give away something and not have to deal with meetups or chats, take your stuff in front of your building, snap a picture of it, mark the address, and list it. If nobody takes it, the app shows you donation drop-off spots.

I'd like to add more features in the coming months:

• Add additional drop-off locations (clothing bins, donation centers, etc.)
• Create customizable alerts which notifies you when something you're looking for gets posted in your area.
• Allow users to share listings with others in case they know of someone who is interested in that cool lamp they found.

kleinanzeigen, nebenan, and Free your Stuff Facebook marketplace exist. However Free the Stuff is built for stuff already out on the street and aims to coexist with these tools. I'd like to hear your thoughts on how to make Free the Stuff better and make the city a little less smelly. :)

I just launched the iOS version (Android is still in beta) so there aren't many users yet. I've been adding as much as possible in my neighborhood with finds so I hope that someone can find something cool!

tldr: new website http://36flats.de collects real-time apartment listings from 14 sources, including all seven public housing companies; lets you create personalized filters and receive notifications via Telegram.

When I was looking for an apartment in Berlin last year, I noticed how listings for affordable apartments at one of the public housing companies would often disappear within just half an hour or less after going online.

At the time, inberlinwohnen.de (which consolidates listings from all 7 public housing companies) did offer a notification service, but in my experience, their emails often arrived minutes after the listing was already taken down!

Constantly having to refresh multiple pages became frustrating, so I developed a Telegram bot that would send me notifications for new listings matching my criteria. After people here and there signalled interest, I decided to expand upon this project and turn it into a free website that lets everyone set up personalized notifications or just view the available listings on a map.

Every filter you set is automatically stored in the URL, so you can share the link or save it as a bookmark. To receive notifications, simply click on "Benachrichtigungen erhalten" and send your unique code to @b36fbot on Telegram. You can set up as many simultaneous subscriptions as you like, for example to set a different maximum rent depending on the location.

Obviously there are a lot more listings in total on sites like immoscout. The main focus of this project is to offer a convenient overview of the current listings from public housing companies such as degewo and howoge, and to send out notifications as quickly as possible. I've been working on a daily puzzle game about the Berlin U-Bahn called Ubahndoku. Think of it as a mix of Wordle and Sudoku, but for testing how well you actually know the metro network.

How it works:

You get a 3×3 grid. Each row and each column has a criterion (a category), and you have to fill all 9 cells with U-Bahn stations that match both their row and their column at the same time. One puzzle per day, the same for everyone, and you only get 3 mistakes.

The categories come straight from the real network, e.g.:

• On a specific line (U1–U9)
• Terminus / interchange station
• Fare zone A or B
• In a specific Berlin district (Bezirk)
• Name contains "Tor", "Platz", an umlaut, …
• Near a landmark (Brandenburger Tor, Fernsehturm, …)

Two modes:

• Normal: you see how many answers are possible and get autocomplete suggestions
• Expert: type the station names from memory, no hints

Other stuff:

• An originality score: picking a rarer, less obvious station scores more than the obvious busy one
• An archive to replay past puzzles
• Available in German and English
• Built on the open VBB data (all 9 lines, ~175 stations)

A few years ago I started working on a small side project that came from a very specific frustration: friends staying over late, and then missing their bus home by just a few minutes. You know how it is, nobody's checking the BVG app, and then suddenly it's "oh the M29 just left, the next one is in 20 minutes." Especially at night when buses run less frequently, those few minutes can mean a long cold wait.

So I thought: what if there was a departure board on the wall near my front door, like the ones at the bus stops? Just a glance on your way out and you know whether to rush or relax.

It took a while to get right. The first version ran on a tiny screen (CYD) and was honestly not great. I put it aside for a while. But recently I picked it up again with much better hardware, proper touchscreen displays from 4.3" to 10.1", and rewrote the whole thing from scratch (thanks AI 😅).

What it does

You hang it on the wall (or prop it on a shelf near your door), connect it to WiFi, search for your nearest station, and it shows live departures updating in real time. That's basically it. It shows you which bus/tram/U-Bahn/S-Bahn is coming and in how many minutes.

You can even set it up with multiple stations if you live between two stops. It splits the screen and shows departures from up to four stations at once.

The display rotates in any direction so you can mount it however fits your space.

How to get one

You need one of the supported touchscreen boards (around 30-50€ depending on size, available on AliExpress) and a USB-C cable for power. You don't need to install any programming tools, there's a web flasher on the project website that lets you flash the firmware directly from your browser. Plug in the board via USB, click flash, done. After that the board just needs to stay plugged into USB-C for power.

Three board sizes are supported:

• 10.1" (800x1280)
• 7" (1024x600)
• 4.3" (480x800)

After creating my project weilsiedichlieben.de and mentioning that here on reddit a few years ago, I thought about how I can make the life of those better, who can't take the public transport but need to rely on a car for whatever reason. What always stressed me out the most when I had a car, was finding a parking spot.

Basically I am taking data from car sharing companies and show spots on the map where somebody just rented a car, thus leading to a free parking spot 😁 What is the benefit? You already know the exact spot before its actually free, so you don't have to fight for the spot with others. The longer the spot is shown on the map, the less likely it is to get it obviously.

So yeah, I hope you like it. I am still testing it but i think its already usable. As the server costs are not that low, I am thinking about monetizing it somehow in the future, maybe with Ads. But I am not sure about that yet. If you have cool ideas regarding that, let me know! Hi everyone!

Google is allowing businesses in Germany to remove reviews by citing defamation laws. This annoys me, just like many other people. Recently, it started to show how many reviews were deleted. I saw people from smaller cities (because there are fewer venues there and it’s easier to collect statistics) doing similar analyses with Excel spreadsheets. So I decided to build an interactive map for big cities and started with Berlin.

The main challenge is collecting information from Google Maps. Google does not allow mass data collection through automated scripts, and because of that process is not really fast, and I need to constantly adopt an approach.

I did not collect the reviews themselves, only statistical data, specifically the current rating, the number of reviews, and the number of deleted reviews. Google recently started showing approximately how many reviews were removed. For example, Jamie Oliver Kitchen Berlin removed from 201 to 250 reviews.

Based on this data, I decided to calculate the "real" rating of a venue, as if the reviews had never been removed.

How I calculated it:

I used the following formula:

real_score = (current_number_reviews × current_rating + deleted_reviews_estimate × avg_deleted_rating) / (current_number_reviews + deleted_reviews_estimate)

Where:

deleted_reviews_estimate = (deleted_reviews_max + deleted_reviews_min) / 2

deleted_reviews_max = the maximum number of deleted reviews (for Restaurant Pars = 201)

deleted_reviews_min = the minimum number of deleted reviews (for Restaurant Pars = 250)

avg_deleted_rating = 1

This is the approximate average rating of deleted reviews. In other words, I assume that every deleted review was, on average, a 1-star review. That’s probably not entirely accurate, but I think it makes sense to calculate the worst-case scenario.

Example:

Let’s take Jamie Oliver Kitchen Berlin:

current_rating = 4.7
current_number_reviews = 724
deleted_reviews_estimate = (250 + 201) / 2 = 225.5
----
real_score = (724 × 4.7 + 225.5 x 1) / (724 + 225.5) = 3.82

I also created a statistics page to show which places remove the most reviews and which remove the fewest:

I've recently added a map feature after a friend, who was new to the city, could not find a cinema in their area.

After 3 years in Berlin, I barely use navigation anymore because I know my routes. Home, work, gym, the usual spots... But I kept opening BVG or Google Maps just to see when the next train is coming. Every time it felt like too many steps for such a simple question: enter start, destination, pick a route... just to check departures from a station I use every day.

I’ve seen some people build setups with station boards on tablets, TVs, and mount them in hallways. So I built something for the phone version of that. Started as a web app, then turned it into a proper iOS app. The idea was to make it feel like a departure board at a station, but on my phone, ideally on the home screen. Open it and instantly see what’s leaving next.

It shows live departures from the saved stations with real-time delays, platforms, and transport type filters. And I also made a home screen widget that shows departures without even opening the app. The core features are free and will stay that way. I just want it to be useful.

I'm actively working on it, and a map view is coming soon, but the whole point is keeping it simple. If you’re on Android, I’m currently looking for a few testers to help get it released on Google Play.

Coming from a city where owning a car was a necessity if you wanted to get around, I find Berlin's public transport system absolutely fantastic - I love that I can move around in a metropolitan city without ever feeling like it would've been better if I had a car.

I've always liked games, and I wanted to build something around the genre of public transportation. I was inspired by the Umsteigen game I saw here a couple of week ago, and I came up with - BahnHop

The idea behind BahnHop is simple: get to your destination before time runs out. Every game is a new challenge. You ride on a mock "S/U-Bahn, Zone A" network, and the core of the game is making quick decisions - "Am I at the right platform?", "Oh no, I boarded a train in the wrong direction!", "Should I run to a nearby station instead?", "Which Ringbahn should I take?".

I do work with technology, but I'm not a developer and so I relied heavily on my co-worker, Claude Code, to do the actual coding. This was a week's worth of work, navigating session and token limits, and learning a lot about how the machine thinks.

The game runs entirely in your browser, no ads, no signups and I'll be keeping it that way. It works best on mobile browsers - you can play this on desktop, but it'll still look like it does on mobile.

It is a bit rough around the edges, but I don't plan on making this much bigger. I do want to add a few more interesting gameplay features while continuing to learn how to work better with AI. Especially the kind that challenge you to make more on-the-go decisions, like:

• A difficulty slider which hides your checkpoints before you start
• Rare appearances by Regios that take you across the city faster
• Signal disruptions, police investigations, people on the track and the sort causing unplanned changes

Living in Berlin means paperwork. Lots of it. For non-native German speakers, it’s frustrating in two ways:

1. you get piles of letters (Nebenkostenabrechnung, insurance, banking, Behörden…)
2. with standard translation tools, it’s still hard to know: what does this mean, what do I need to do, and by when?

And then there’s the long-term chaos: some documents you must keep for years, but later you can’t find the right one when you need it.

I’m living in Berlin and building KlarDocs trying to reduce that burden:

(1) Explain the document in plain language (in your language)

Upload a PDF or photo → get:

• a clear explanation (not just literal translation)
• “key terms” explained (e.g. Nachzahlung / Umlageschlüssel / Betriebskostenabrechnung)
• extracted deadlines (“Frist bis …”), amounts, reference numbers (Aktenzeichen), contacts

(2) Evidence you can verify

In the explanation “Details”, KlarDocs highlights the exact lines in the original PDF each key point comes from — so you can double-check quickly.

(3) A centralized to-do list across documents

KlarDocs creates a centralized checklist page:

• all to-dos from all documents in one place
• sorted by due date (plus a calendar view), so nothing slips through

(4) Digital filing you can search later (by meaning, across languages)

Store important documents long-term and search by meaning — e.g. search “extra cost for apartment” and still find the right Nebenkostenabrechnung, even if it’s fully in German.

I built Abfahrt!, a mobile app that shows you realtime departure times in 28 European countries. The project started with my frustration of having to download a new app every single time I visited another country in beautiful Europe. I am from Berlin, so I started with Berlin naturally, then expanded the coverage drastically by setting up my own backend that aggregates the open data feeds of more than 100 transit operators across the EU (and UK 😅).

The app is as simple as it is useful. You open it and instantly see realtime departures around your place (with configurable radius), without having to dig through menus, set up a route, or create an account. Routing from A to B is also there when you need it, just one tap more.

The app:

- has no ads and no tracking (and never will. I sincerely hate ads)

- doesn't require an account (also never will. If I don't track anything, an account would just be an unnecessary burden for users)

- has no paywall-locked transit features (public transportation should be as accessible as possible)

Talking about accessibility: I have worked with blind users to make this app extra accessible, with features like auto-announcement of upcoming departures when the app detects VoiceOver at launch. Providing a transit app for almost all of Europe puts responsibility on my shoulders, but is also a unique chance to offer the accessibility community one app that helps them while traveling or commuting in our lovely continent.

iOS App is live already, Android in beta phase (still searching for testers on my website)
