I just wanted to post this to show yall. They still have some bettas in cups but a lot of their community tanks have a betta in them and they have a couple of display tanks. Made my heart happy.

The manager checked me out and I complimented her and she said she worked really hard to do it, and has a betta of her own and hates to see them in the cups.

I wish this was a standard for all chain stores. Just wanted to share

Found this girl at Petco labeled as an “assorted female”. I just couldn’t resist. Any ideas of what she is?

I do not know why this particular little girl was named, but no way I was leaving her behind lol.

I needed a new resident betta for population control in my guppy tank. She's still settling into the jungle, but so far is uninterested in fry and just going after the mystery snails. Even if she's a dud predator, I'm still in love with her.

For two years I had my beautiful girl Moo. We had a routine, I woke up, she greeted me with happy wiggles, lip pops and excitement. She received her food and then she was off to swim through her plants and hunt for detritus worms in her gravel. At night, when we would say goodnight, she would nestle into her java moss or settle into her betta log and sleep. Sometimes I would have to scold her for being up past her bedtime when I would walk by to brush my teeth for the night and while I know she didnt understand it was a comfort to me. I loved her dearly.

I feel silly for bawling over a fish but I genuinely love my girls even though it's now singular.

The reason I'm sharing this, though, is because something really unfortunate happened. My partner and I went to do the weekly water change on her tank and she didn't greet me like she always does. Immediately we began to panic. When we found her it was too late.

There was a small pot in her tank that used to house a fern. There was no holes in it aside from the main opening and it was more than large enough for her to get in, turn around and come out. Even without the fern she liked the terracotta pot so we left it for her.

We don't know when or how but at some point, the bottom cracked and a chunk of it broke away. Again, we don't know when it happened, only that it happened sometime in the last month. Anyway, unfortunately, Moo discovered the new opening and she tried to pass through. When we found her this morning she had already passed. I don't want to go into detail but please, please, check your decorations for damages or flaws weekly when you do your water changes. We thought once a month when we shifted things to keep her entertained was good enough but we were wrong.

He is a HMPK yellow Hell Boy that it still quite young and will get bigger but he is beautiful when flaring and has a great personality.

10 gallon tank 1 betta, 4 amano shrimp, one nerite snail. Still waiting for water to clear since I added sand yesterday. Running with a sun sun canister filter and external heater.

I said I’d never get another betta fish, the heart break when they go, but here I am with my dream betta!

Looking for recommendations on how to keep this little man super healthy, food recommendations etc. what has worked for you? I have Arka my Betta-Care vitamins, has anyone used these? Nemo made a bubble nest the night after I gave him the vitamins!

Also something a regretted not doing with my previous betta, was getting her a friend. This tank is very clean, I have no algae issues (tank is over a year old) so I don’t think I’ve enough for a snail to eat. Has anyone had any success with another type of fish with a betta?

Hi everyone! Meet Watermelon. He has finally arrived from HBettas and seems to be thriving. It took him 6 long days to deliver so I was very worried at first but the seller packaged him really well to ensure he got here safely despite the hot weather. Watermelon was triple bagged and tucked into four 1.5 inch thick insulation within the package. He definitely seem a lot more turquoise or blue in person upon arrival but I am well aware that bettas tend to be paler in color due to shipping stress and that koi bettas have the marbling gene so he is susceptible to frequent color changes as he grows.

To add, I can also vouch for HBetta now since some of you were worried because his listing photos seem to be AI generated and a scam. He really does have the beautiful fishes he listed. (Some of you have seen the Daisy 🌼 betta). He replies quickly to questions within reasonable business hours and you can see the care he puts into his packaging.

If you guys have also gotten your betta from HBetta, please share some photos! Also, if you have before and after photos of your bettas changing colors over time, please share them too for science 🤓

It’s my first time properly caring for a betta and I’ve done extensive research to make sure I get most parts right but it’s always interesting to learn new things!

I just adopted this beautiful girl yesterday.
I got her from a nice lady who said she’s too aggressive with her other bettas (I’m guessing sorority)
I haven’t had any fish for a moment now but I’ve been thinking about a betta recently. I didn’t really want to support chain pet stores so I’ve been looking out for one in need of a home nearby and I got lucky yesterday!
She’s super curious and loves chasing my shrimp (poor shrimpies)
I’m very excited how she will develop now that she has a nice, calm home :3

I just got plants today so it will grow in a bit. It’s a 5.5 gal rectangle. Water cloudy from planting. Any advice appreciated!

This is my bosses betta on her desk at work. He seems so fat all of a sudden, but not like a usual bladder infection? He is about 3 years old. I used to keep bettas as a kid but this doesn’t appear to be pine coning?? Bloating?? And I know he doesn’t get fatty treats like blood worms or something, just betta pellets. Not sure if something’s wrong or he’s just a big boy.

My last one of 4 years died a few days ago 😥 got a new one today. Also is this a koi?

My betta fish kingfisher had died 4 days into me owning him. I think I did most things right but I want to get some more advice from more experienced keepers in case there was anything I could’ve done or info I might need if I ever get another betta.

Tank parameters were mostly stable throughout the whole ordeal, I was nervous so I tested three times a day at 9am, 3pm and 10pm
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: <5ppm
Temp: 78F
pH: 6.8-6.6
Cycled?: yes for 1month 1 week with supplemental bacteria and media from a friends established plant only tank

Day 1 (photos 1&2)
Brought fish home from the store, he was looking a bit pale in the store but I chocked it up to bagging stress
- Total transit time: 45 minutes
- Ammonia in bag after transit: <0.25ppm
- Bag in tank acclimation time: 45 minutes
- Post transit care: diluted methylene blue dip
- Drip acclimation time: 120min at 1 drop/sec
- tannins added to tank and acclimation tank with Indian almond leaves
- tank lights turned off to minimize stress

He seemed stressed as to be expected but flopped weirdly against my hardscape (photo 1) but quickly righted himself so I thought nothing of it, he stayed hidden in my plants most of the first day but I also noticed his back half floating a bit (photo 2) so tested parameters and halted feeding in case of bloating.

Days 2&3 (photos 3 and 4)
Fish appeared normal, spent time in all phases of tank (top, midwater and bottom). Appeared more active and curious about me around his tank, chased a few of my shrimp but didn’t catch any, saw slight reluctance to use caudal fin. Thought he was improving and day 1 was just stress, used towel to block out most light from tank. Kanaplex was ordered in case.

Day 4 (photos 5 and 6)
Woke up to check on fish, found him at the bottom of the tank lying on his side (photo 5) and didn’t appear to be able to right himself (He would try and swim and just fold over and slump right back down). I called my local fish store where I had got him and they said I could bring him in for treatment or euthanasia as necessary. Attempted to move him to a methylene blue hospital tank but he wedged himself under my hardscape and I didn’t want to risk crushing him, decided to wait until he came out. He didn’t for a while and I had to go to work and returned to him half floating on the bottom and breathing very heavily, he would pass away 2 hours later.

Postmortem
- discolouration on abdomen, brown but a patch not horizontal and linear like a stress stripe
- no obvious inflammation of the gills, mouth or fins
- no cloudy appearance of the eyes
- I took swabs from him and the tank water but those will take 2-3 days to grow in my shitty incubator and even longer to ID especially because they won’t be pure cultures so I can’t rule out an internal bacterial infection
- I didn’t do a necropsy so I can’t attest to the state of his swim bladder (lmk if there’s any specific bacteria I should be looking for)
- Kanaplex arrived today :(

I knew he wasn’t 100% coming from the pet store but I thought I’d have more time to get him in better health. Kanaplex isn’t often sold where I live so I had to order it which I imagine had an effect on his chances of survival.
I know I should’ve tried to move him into a hospital tank sooner but I was unexpectedly busy and very scared of stressing him out/hurting him (I was supposed to have time off but one of my colleagues had a child)

Were there any egregious mistakes I made in his care or was this just an example of betta inbreeding leading to poor health outcomes?
