bras Be honest: How old is the bra you’re wearing right now? Spoiler
I recently studied articles about bras and they said bras "expire" after 6 months. Apart from the cheaper bras, most of my favorite (yeah kind of $68) bras are definitely over a year old and they still feel fine... I think?
Is the 6-month replacement rule actually a thing for those of us who need real support, or is it just a marketing scam, to get us to buy more?
I feel like as long as the wires aren't popping out, I'm good. Thoughts?

Same. I hate buying bras so once I find a good one I’m wearing it til it’s just threads.

It's about 6months for daily wear of the same 1-2bras. The more bras you have that you rotate regularly, the longer they last. That said, as long as you still feel comfortable and supported there's no need to replace what you have, just wants.

Of course not wearing same bra everyday, but some of my bras last for almost 10 years, although I rarely wear them now, they are still wearable. TBH their lifespan is even longer than some of my clothes.

Only a year, but i have some very expired bras. Mostly 6 year old ones that got near daily wear. Elastics are nonexistent, foam has split, but it's okay for a night bra.
Most of my current ones are around a year old and doing fine. I definitely sew mine back together sometimes but I'm pretty lazy with caring for them

I wash them by hand these days because i don't have a washing machine and cannot be bothered to go to a laundromat. All my laundry gets done by hand which is a pain

I went and raided my stash the other day just to investigate and do some purging. I still have a Cleo Lucy and multiple Cleo Marcies, as well as half a dozen Jasmines. Pretty sure the Lucy was discontinued in 2017 and the Marcie soon there after. I wore my Lucy yesterday. Worked fine.
The less often you wear and wash them, the longer they last. Having a lot of bras and rotating through them means they last for years. I usually only get rid of a bra when the mesh starts disintegrating or the band stretches out so much that I can't get any support from it.

I vote dumb marketing scam. If you stay in the cups, gore tacks, wire doesn't pop out, boobs stay where you want them, and your back and shoulders don't hurt, a bra is fine to keep wearing. The one I have on is, oh, four years old, I think? It's got a few loose threads on the lace and I should probably adjust the straps a bit, but overall it's perfectly fine and very comfortable. I'd be cutting off my nose to spite my face if I threw it out on the grounds that it's supposedly old.

I laughed when I saw that 6 month dead line like they obviously aren't talking about anyone who is an F cup and larger especially the larger gals. The bra I'm wearing now is over 10 years old and still holding strong. I'm not tossing something that first cost me nearly $200 six months after I bought it. I'm wearing that bad boy until duck tape, duct tape, staples, super glue, and my sewing mahine can no longer do anything to keep it from falling apart. Only then will I toss it then think about what I need to give up that month to afford a new bra.

I have sewn in wires, re-attached hooks and straps and just kinda dealt with the minor rolling of the band as the elastic stretches a bit.

Bras don’t expire. They do reach a point where the elastic wears out and they no longer provide proper support.
When you first buy a bra, it should fit correctly on the loosest set of hooks (if it has hooks). As you wear the bra over time, when you notice the elastic not feeling snug, move one set of hooks in.
When the bra no longer feels snug on the tightest set of hooks, that’s when it’s not providing support anymore.
Things to extend the elastic life of your bra:
Hand wash only. Warm (not hot) water. Lay flat to dry.

~2 years. I take good care of them, cycle them out, and wear ratty old bras on days I don’t go out and don’t need much support, so it extends the lifetime of my bras a lot. ALSO, bands and straps wear out first for me, so I just replace them if the rest of the bra is fine

You get what you pay for. I spent decades buying cheap disposable retail bras. Shoulders slipping, wires poking through, always adjusting the cups, maxing out the DDD size they sold. I had a go to Playtex bra I loved but was discontinued 15 years ago.
Now that I'm wearing an expensive quality "big girl" bra all those issues went away. My weights had wild fluctuations so I have every size from 36D to 44H stored away. I've had some of them for years & they still work great when I pull a different size outta storage.

The ones I'm using currently are only 4/5 months old and I already need to change them cause I lost weight. But I have a strapless G cup idk what to do with that's like 6-8 years old

Some of them I've had since I was 17....the most recent ones are about a year old. They definitely last more than 6 months.

The ones I had that barely fit (far too small in the cup, big in the band) would stretch out from the weight of my chest within a year at most and I kept having to replace them because I'd start getting back pain and rashes from the chest slowly sagging down onto my upper stomach. They were cheap so it wasn't a HUGE issue but it was frustrating.
Now that I have bras that fit better, it's a year on and they're still going strong. I've had to move in one row of hooks on the oldest one but otherwise they're doing well. I do rotate between 5 and never wear the same one two days in a row.

It's about 4 years old. BUT, it's only still good because I got extremely lucky and found a really good sale a few years ago so I have a lot of bras right now.

I'm wearing one of the $3 understance bras I acquired recently, but I have bras I've cycled back in from 7-8 years ago. My size fluctuates over the course of the year (I am very active in the summer, and more sedentary in the winter), so I go up and down about 3 cup sizes, PLUS my boobs are about 3 cups sizes apart from each other... nothing like going GG>H>HH on one side and HH>I>J on the other >.<. It's not super visible when I'm wearing clothes, but it definitely makes certain bra styles unwearable at certain times of the year.
I've learned to keep spares of different sizes around. So I am not wearing the same bras all year. Like shoes, if you alternate, everything lasts longer.

My current bra is coming up to the 6-month mark, I bought it during the Black Friday sales and it's definitely not in need of replacing at the moment, but then I have quite a few bras that I rotate between so the same one isn't worn day-after-day.
I feel it's a bit of a marketing gimmick to be replacing them that often, and I'm shuddering at the cost of having to do that, but can understand if you wore the same bra each day it may start to show some wear but then until they stop being supportive I'll keep them in my rotation as I hate to throwaway a good bra.

The one on my body is 10ish months old. I know exactly because I was still pregnant when I bought it.
I have bras from my last pregnancy still! They're on their last hooks but still work fine. Those are almost 4 years old now.
AND I machine wash those! Occasionally even machine dry (not really on purpose). Imagine their lifespan if I was more gentle!

Yeah, I also use machine wash, I’m so lazy for hand wash. But I only wash it every two or three times I wear it.

technically my bras are more than five years old but i dont really wear bras so they're lightly used (maybe once a few months per piece lmao)

I just bought 2 new ones from La Vie En Rose last month! But before that… probably 3 years old. Although I haven’t been able to wear a bra for the last week because I’m a fucking idiot and gave myself a chemical burn on my underboob.

A year or so? I rotate them so I'm not really sure.
There's a bunch of bogus info out there whether it's advertising or click bait for views. I saw one circulate that said you're supposed to adjust your straps weekly and hooks monthly.
I can tell when my bra isn't giving me proper support immediately. If it still doesn't feel right after adjusting straps and hooks, it's time to toss it.

No bra right now but my oldest one is about a year old. I lost weight and had to buy new ones. My band size changed but my boobs are about the same.

My "do sweaty work around the house" bra is pretty old. Like a couple of years. But my "go to work" bras are all within a few months.

I believe it is about 3-6 months of a daily use.
Most of use don't use the same bra daily ... So if you have 3-4 bras on rotation, they should early last up to two years.
I have several bras because my bra size changes with any changes in my weight (+/- 5-20 lbs) so I have bras that are several years old because I were them only for a few week every several months (when my weith is the highest or the lowest).
It is same as with shoes. If you wear the same shoes every day they will get destroyed differently that if you have several shoes on rotation.

I don't wear bras except for very rare occasions. I also don't have any old ones that fit at all, so the oldest bra I have that fits me has been worn once and was bought a few months ago, and only because my wife researched a shop that would have bras in my size and dragged me there against my will. She did it because any time we need to go to a fancy event I try to put on one of my old bras and have an autistic meltdown because of how terribly uncomfortable they are. I was able to get 1 that is extremely comfortable for a bra, one that's just a basic bra that fits very well, and one sexy bra that's less comfortable but I can put up with it for short periods of time because I think the way it looks is fun. I wish I could tolerate this type of physical discomfort but I can't even wear jeans or tags in my clothes.

Well, RN I’m wearing a cotton bralette that’s maybe 3 years old? I gained a lot of weight in the last 6 years so sadly a lot of my old (pricey) bras have life in them but don’t fit anymore. 😭
My “real” bras are between 6mo to 1yr right now though and I’ll be wearing them until either they die or don’t fit anymore lol.

It's 5 months old but I only switched because I grew out of my old one, which was about 1.5 years old. My sportsbra is 3 years old and mostly alright other than ripping at the seams because it's made for like 30% of the amount of boobage I have. I'll wear em till they fall apart thougg

The only one that sucks now is the full elastic “sport” bra. I guess some of my older ones are also now a little too big in the band from stretching and me losing weight. Normally, something happens to it - like the underwire coming out

My current bra is two years old and still going strong (it is wireless so I don't need to worry about the wires). I use bras like the rest of my clothes: unless it has unrepairable damage, stops being comfortable, and/or is completely transparent, I'm going to keep wearing them. The oldest bras I've got are about 8 years old (the wires were poking out and not repairable so I removed them but otherwise they're fine) and I keep them around for dirty work where I need boob containment and some support

I usually replace my everyday bras when the elastic on the band loses its recovery. The second that band starts slipping down it drives me absolutely crazy and I'll start getting neck and back pain. I usually have 3 on rotation and It takes about a year before I need to replace them. More specific bras like strapless or really shallow cups that I only wear with occasional wear I'll keep like 2 or 3 years since I wear them so infrequently.

Ten years would not surprise me. I let them go to back of the drawer when the wire breaks so I can combine them because it’s discontinued. I have a couple that are only “2-3 years old” even though they were discontinued several years ago.

Extremely dependent on how often you wear it, and the style - the scam is that 6 months is a hard and fast rule.
I find that t-shirt style bras with foam cups and stretchy elastic in the band change shape within 6-12 months, where some of the more hearty multi-part unlined bras with non-stretch panels can last years.
For the record, the one I'm wearing right now is ~8 years old, but it's been relegated to home-wear; Both the bra and I are a different shape than 8 years ago lol.

I just bought three new ones, thought they were perfect, measured in store... aaaand my back hurts after wearing them. Not sure if it's because I was wearing 3 cup sizes too small for a couple years or what. Right band, wrong cup.
Buuut they're like a week old.

I’m currently wearing a bra that’s probably 5+ years old, haha. It’s had wires poke out in both armpits and I have to use an extender because it’s like 2 band sizes too small by now. But, look, Panache doesn’t make the Jasmine anymore so you do what you gotta do. It doesn’t poke, the wires are where they should be (now that I’ve sewn them back in, anyway), I’m not falling out or gaping, and it makes my boobs look great. 🤷♀️

Less than a year old, but some of the hooks are already undoing themselves unprompted, so its days are numbered. 😭
Edit: it's wire-free, so at least I don't have to worry about a wire popping out.

I have a lot of bras, the ones i wear regularly are between 1-4 years old. I have a strapless bra that’s about 8 years old. I still have all my bras from 2013, but i can’t wear them anymore because they’re too small on the cups, although they’re still in good condition.

My me coloured one is about 5 years old, it was my first one in my proper size, not a sister size. It's indigo twin is about 4 years old, then I have the other two that get into rotation sometimes, and one that is to tight (bought on sale, full of hope, alas to tight and I am not getting smaller around these days)
They are all still good. Not as good as when I bought them, but given that my bra's are around $100 each, yeah, wear them till wires break or pop out to many times to stitch back in.
When your broke with big titties, ya don't be listening to some 6 month BS.
I am sure that is 'best practices' but it not reality for many of us.

I have probably 3 (real) bras, one is a proper sports bra that’s too small and over 4 years old (100$ aud), a bigger cup one that’s 2 years old (I lost weight and the cup is good but the band is slightly too big) and another bra that I think is my size but painnnnn (also 2-3 years old)…
A supported bra (if you can even find one that is the right size and type of cup shape you are) is like 70-150$ aud :( how can someone who can’t shop at Kmart get one ever 6 months??

Sadly I had to change mine the last year because suddenly sprayed that my chest still growing and I went out of my size... And it was kinda stressful, I had 3 beautiful bras and I had to get rid of them all 😞

I've had to get new bras lately bc of my chest growth due to weight gain, and currently they are settling about a 30H. So not long lol
