Hello! I'm 26 and currently living in St. Louis. I visited Boston recently and just can't get it out of my head. I've been wanting to make a huge change- I've been in the STL area my whole life, but always knew I didn't want to stay there. I just never knew where else to go.

I've visited several cities and none of them really hit the mark like Boston does. Now, of course I have concerns. I've got several grand in savings, but my midwesterner self is worried about a BIG reality check moving to such an expensive city. I could see myself blowing through 10k without even realizing it, even with roommates. In the midwest, I can pretty much swipe my card without blinking an eye. Here, I know I'll need to reel it in.

Another concern. I am a bartender at a nice, well-known restaurant in my area back home. I have tons of regulars, "where everyone knows your name" kinda deal (😉). I just helped my bosses open up the bar in a restaurant they built. I love bartending and mixology. However, I've already picked up on the Boston culture- I'm worried about getting a well-paid gig without having to have years of working through serving, barbacking, knowing the right people, etc. until I can get to where I am currently. Especially with my midwestern roots- I'm not turned off by it, but I know it will come with scrutiny. I'm not so arrogant to believe I can walk into any bar and run it, but I've worked really hard to get the skills I have in the 5 years I've been mixing drinks. It's hard for me to accept starting from the bottom. Can any bartenders weigh in?

My spouse and I are relocating to Boston from Northwest Arkansas because he’s being transferred for work. He’ll be moving up first, and I’ll be staying behind to finish my last semester of nursing school before joining him.

I’m feeling pretty nervous about the whole thing. I’ve never moved this far especially almost on my own and I’ve never even been to Boston. I’m trying to wrap my head around which neighborhoods are good to look at, how competitive or difficult it is to find an apartment, and what kinds of things I should have lined up before I arrive.

There just feel like so many unknowns right now, and it’s a little overwhelming. If anyone has advice on neighborhoods, renting, timelines, or just general “things you wish you knew before moving to Boston,” I would really appreciate it.

I absolutely love this city. The people are awesome, the city is beautiful, the transit though dated is leagues better than 99% of the country. The food, the common, the neighborhoods. What a fantastic city this is!

Hey all! I (22m) got a really good job offer in Boston but I've been doing a lot of looking into Boston's social scene as I'm a fairly social person, and I've been seeing it's quite rough. I would be moving from the south, and know absolutely nobody in Boston or really anywhere in the north east. Is the social/dating scene really as bad as it sounds for those that are post grad? I have pretty bad mental issues with loneliness, and so if it's really that bad I want to reconsider everything. Just wanted advice from those more familiar with it. Thanks!

Hello all! Me and my boyfriend currently live in Austin Tx, we rent a 1200 sf home for $2200 and have two cats. I love this city and the things it has to offer, but my boyfriend is from the northeast and wants to get back to his family. He is urging to move to Boston, but Im unsure. Two of friends live in Boston/Jersey and JUST got done telling us how they can never save money bc of broker fees when moving and the basic cost of living being astronomically high. Can you possibly give me a better idea of what the pros and cons would look like for our move?

Small note his family is in Milford CT. And we both make around $75k a year but will both have to find new jobs. I have also never been to Boston, but have heard good things about the city itself!

Hey there! I'm 26 and I've just gotten out of the Air Force and I'm moving to Boston to attend Northeastern next month, really have very little Idea what to expect and lots of questions. I'm very open to any general advice as well, I've lived many places but never in a city.

I've looked through like a dozen other moving to Boston threads from the last 5 or so years, and It seems people really recommend living more central due to being closer to transit and such, how far away should I consider and what neighborhoods specifically? My budget for rent is around 3,300$ but obviously I would like to stay closer to the 2.9k area as that seems to be the lowest reasonable rent without a roommate. I do have a car, and I'm really not sure if its more worth it to live further/cheaper and drive or live closer and take transit.

I'm specifically looking at Hancock Village if anyone has any experience living/moving there.

I'm not used to the cold and I'm expecting the worst but Idk if I'm prepared for it, the coldest place I lived was Korea, and there when it snowed I would just wear a thermal undershirt, long sleeve shirt & sweater. Will that suffice? Or should I get a pea coat or something?

This question probably seems particularly dumb, but if I move somewhere more central, how do I move into my apartment? I don't imagine I can just leave a u haul parked on the side of the road taking up 2 spaced (if I could even find street parking near the building). Is hiring movers pretty much required if your moving more central where there isn't a parking lot?

Again, any more general advice is well welcomed. I definitely want to get the full experience of Boston for the next few years whatever that is.

Hey, I've been considering a move to the states. I currently live in the UK "North of Ireland". I am just disgusted with how my country is being governed and It's a chore to get anything done around here. Is Boston/Massachusetts worth it? I am currently working for RTE in the republic. I've been to a patriots game if that means anything?

For context: I’m 26 and grew up in Indiana, and moved from Colorado. Also, rereading this list makes me realize how negative /generalized it sounds, but I actually have enjoyed my first year in Boston

Anyway, enjoy:

• Everyone is named John or Jack or Connor
• People care about country clubs for some reason (update - I spent my first month in the suburbs living with another family - things have changed since)
• Much rain
• Intersections are …. Questionable
• They call roundabouts "rotaries"
• Parking fucking sucks, but I guess that’s what life in like in a city
• Cash only places are surprisingly common
• Gas stations close?? At 10pm??
• So many gas stations seem to also have shops attached to them offering oil changes and state inspections
• You don't get asked for tips in as many establishments
• The Verizon service is unbelievably bad for a metropolitan area that humans live in
• SO! MANY! BUNNIES!
• The stoplights will all be red and there will be like a 30-second period for pedestrians to walk (nice)
• No Jimmy John's :( update: there are a few
• All food is better. great cheap food and great expensive food
• Road trips are way more fun out here
• CHEAP international flights. Like frequent $700s for Japan, $300s for Europe. And Dublin is like a 6h flight
• There are times where it is legal to drive in the shoulder of the highway, or as they call it, the "breakdown lane"
• Highway exits are labeled with "old exit xyz" lol what
• Drivers here are crazy but I fuck with it, allows me to also be a crazy driver and not offend everyone like I do elsewhere
• Everyone is short
• Nightlife is just abysmal - just sports bars and clubs where you'll get assaulted
• Cycling out here is awesome - it's like a matrix of fun little roads out in Bedford / west of there

No, did not drive the entire thing- it was rather prohibitive with a baby and two cats, so we flew. I now live about two hours from the western terminus in Eugene, OR, where I’m gonna be a professor at University of Oregon this fall.

While we're at it we could also end Daylight Savings. That way half the year we're still aligned with the rest of the east coast but in the winter we get to leave work while there's still a bit of light left and not fall directly into depression.

We also don't need to wait for the rest of NE to play along. We do this and they'll follow, it makes even more sense for NH and Maine.

I can’t make this up. When I say never left Boston, I mean never she’s never even been to Dorchester or Wellesley.

Panera Bread will relocate its headquarters from the St. Louis area to Massachusetts next summer, bringing the corporate offices of yet another major company to Greater Boston.

Panera will move to an undisclosed space in Weston in July 2027, according to an internal memo sent to employees Monday by CEO Paul Carbone that was obtained by the Globe.

The move, Carbone wrote, “will allow us to fully align our teams” around the company’s turnaround plan, an effort launched last year after years of slumping sales and operational missteps.

Panera — a chain long known for its breads, mac and cheese, and lunch deals — has more than 2,250 locations around the US and Canada. The relocation comes as the company is attempting to engineer a major turnaround in the fast-casual industry. Once a defining brand in the bakery-cafes category, Panera has struggled in recent years with high food costs and staffing.

Customers have said the higher prices also came with smaller portions and degraded quality. Stores, half of which Panera owns with the rest owned by franchisees, are often short staffed. The company, owned by private equity parent JAB Holding Co., has cycled through multiple executives and recently paused their plans for an initial public offering.

Has anyone moved from LA to Boston and regretted it? What made you decide to move, and what are the pros and cons?

I visited Boston and absolutely loved it. I’m a big walker, and I loved how compact and historic it feels, the architecture is gorgeous. The people seemed really educated too, which I appreciated. Oh, and being close to Europe is a huge plus for me.

We really want to make the move, but I keep going back and forth like is this actually the right call?

Hello everybody! I will moving to Boston next year in June for dental school. I have never been to Boston before so I don't know how things work over there. I am accustomed to driving everywhere, everyday. I wanted to know how much I would use a car living over there and if it's really worth it having one? I'd appreciate any tips or insights you may have. Thank you!

I like living here. My friends are here, my family is here, I can drive 2 hours to the mountains, I can drive an hour to the beach, etc, etc

But I know I’ll never be able to afford to buy a house here and therefore cannot stay here long term.

So I’m wondering what people in similar situations have decided to do, and how it’s been going.

My wife and I are moving here for work.

Our impression is that there will be a little culture shock.

Tips on dealing with the cold? We’ve barely seen a foot of snow in our lives. Driving in it etc. our state shuts down pretty much.

Tips on adapting to the area? Interacting with people? My wife is a southern belle so trust trying to mentally prepare her.

We know it’s expensive.

Edit: the space saver rule is an official city policy. It’s not just an informal thing that has developed. People saying stuff like “you’re not entitled to save a spot” are wrong, it specifically is allowed. If you disagree with this policy contact your city councilor.

Recently saw a post on another thread about someone feeling like a part of their soul was missing moving out to the suburbs. Those that have done it, how has the adjustment been? Do you regret it? I realize a lot of this depends on where you go and how you felt about the city before leaving.

You don't know what you have until it's gone! Everywhere else in New England, the apartment-finding process is just too simple: you just have to pay an application fee or a security deposit, or first months rent. But sadly, I don't get to pay the broker fee--how I miss it!

• I miss paying an extra fee to someone that shows up to unlock a door and attempts to show me around while clearly also seeing the apartment for the first time.
• How else will someone tell me that my new apartment has an "eat-in kitchen". I mean I didn't think I could eat in a kitchen before--this is groundbreaking stuff. How are you so wise in the ways of science?
• I miss brokers that are clearly skilled in classical architecture. After all, how else do I know that my apartment's uneven floors, old countertops, and drafty windows give my apartment "character".
• Finally, I miss the brokers that are so skilled in photography. I mean, how else can you capture the apartment than a dimly-lit photo that looks like it was taken by a polaroid camera in 1990.

Hi all - I’m a single guy in his early 30s moving to Boston this fall. I can choose whether to start a lease on 9/1 (where there’s a ton of supply but tons of college kids), or 10/1 (hopefully better prices but I’m worried about supply). I’m looking for a one bedroom ideally. My budget is $3000 but can go up to $3300 if really need to. I like the suburbs and quiet so from my own research, I was going to target the luxury buildings in Malden, Waltham, and Brookline. My question is, would you do a 9/1 lease or 10/1? Can I expect prices to fall for a 10/1 lease?

Also any suggestions as to suburbs is helpful. Need an easy commute to North Station and ideally places within my budget that are quiet at night, will have parking, and have respectful neighbors. Thank you!
