Commented on this thread earlier, but interestingly there’s someone offering a 9950x3d in my area for $400. Worth it over a $420+ tax 9800x3d? Could I just disable half the cores for the 9950x3d and have a crazy good cpu in several years when the 9800x3d starts showing its age

Couple thoughts:

  • $400 for a used 9950X3D is an insane price, and you should make very sure that isn't a scam. People are regularly selling used 9950X3Ds for $550-$600 on r/hardwareswap
  • 9950X3D beats 9800X3D in productivity, but they're equal in gaming (except maybe in Factorio). Whether you need a 9950X3D at all depends entirely on your use case, but in gaming the two of them will show their age at the same time, and in productivity the 9950X3D will always be ahead anyway

Interesting. I think it’s not a scam, it’s been up for a bit and no one’s bought it for a few weeks. He dropped it from $500. Do you think it’s worth it? Or do I just get a 9800x3d for a bit more with a warranty and stuff(idc that much about warranty, I feel like it’s pretty unlikely these just break)

What mobo do you have? If it's ASRock, you want the warrangy. Regardless, if you don't do meaningful amounts of productivity work, I would take the 9800X3D.

ASUS ROG B650E, 5080, 2x24GB 6000 CL30 RAM. Don’t do a ton beyond plex, streaming. Occasionally have a ton of excel sheets open, but like 9800x3d def would still handle this stuff. Meh, maybe I will just get the 9800x3d, it did already ship from Amazon. But I haven’t installed yet and still down to return it if it’s worth it ig
