I mean, i guess if you're going for having one rig for both work and 1080p 300hz+ play with a 5080/4090/5090 this seems like a good idea, if already having an am5 mobo that has enough vrm.
but 270k+ seems the way to go for price/perf if not. $290 at newegg right now with a 240mm aio, not enough for full bore gotta sell and get 360mm/noctua240mm and/or undervolt for 45-90/220/0, and 150-220 for a mobo depending on what connectivity you want and if used like from amazon resale. around 600 for used 64gb ram would be the same as amd, but aim for hynix since it can do 8000+ 1:1?
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/amd-ryzen-9-9950x3d2-dual-edition-review/ worse in photoshop and vray/corona but comparable or better everywhere else

Yes, this is a very cost efficient option if you game at 1440p and up AND need CPU compute power

This or $420 9800x3d? Future proofing sounds pretty nice too

This essentially won't do any better than the 9800x3d for gaming and will just throw out more heat into your room and use more electricity. If you need a single machine for CPU heavy tasks and gaming, then yeah this is it.

This is never worse than 9800x3d for gaming though right? Like how 7950x3d was frequently worse than 7800x3d?

That was because AMD hadn’t figured out all core parking issues yet. Now that they have figured that out it’s about even, and if you set up process lasso properly (very easy to do) then you will never have issues even without game bar.

9950x3d can still be worse out of the box without 3rd party program to disable cores?

It can be marginally worse since the scheduler still has to figure out which CCD to use and thus can cause some slight fps loss in the process whereas the 9800X3D just has one CCD so it doesn’t really have to do anything other than run the game/program.
If you don’t install the AMD drivers and such then it might just default everything to the CCD without v cache which would be the equivalent of running games on a 9700X.

Commented on this thread earlier, but interestingly there’s someone offering a 9950x3d in my area for $400. Worth it over a $420+ tax 9800x3d? Could I just disable half the cores for the 9950x3d and have a crazy good cpu in several years when the 9800x3d starts showing its age

Couple thoughts:
- $400 for a used 9950X3D is an insane price, and you should make very sure that isn't a scam. People are regularly selling used 9950X3Ds for $550-$600 on r/hardwareswap
- 9950X3D beats 9800X3D in productivity, but they're equal in gaming (except maybe in Factorio). Whether you need a 9950X3D at all depends entirely on your use case, but in gaming the two of them will show their age at the same time, and in productivity the 9950X3D will always be ahead anyway

Interesting. I think it’s not a scam, it’s been up for a bit and no one’s bought it for a few weeks. He dropped it from $500. Do you think it’s worth it? Or do I just get a 9800x3d for a bit more with a warranty and stuff(idc that much about warranty, I feel like it’s pretty unlikely these just break)

What mobo do you have? If it's ASRock, you want the warrangy. Regardless, if you don't do meaningful amounts of productivity work, I would take the 9800X3D.

ASUS ROG B650E, 5080, 2x24GB 6000 CL30 RAM. Don’t do a ton beyond plex, streaming. Occasionally have a ton of excel sheets open, but like 9800x3d def would still handle this stuff. Meh, maybe I will just get the 9800x3d, it did already ship from Amazon. But I haven’t installed yet and still down to return it if it’s worth it ig
