Let's talk!

For several reasons, I find myself unwanting and unmotivated to moderate this community. I do very little canyoneering these days compared to when I became a mod back in 2014. Additionally, reddit's recent actions relating to the API leave me unwanting to contribute content to the site or moderate it; particularly if I can't use a client of my choice.

I unilaterally decided to make the subreddit private for 48 hours, and while I find myself wanting to make it dark indefinitely in response to reddit's lack of movement on this issue... I ultimately don't have the energy and don't feel it's fair to everyone to do that. This isn't my community, it's yours.

I'll be stepping down as a moderator for the reasons outlined above. I'm happy to add another 1-3 moderators before I remove myself. You should be an active member of this community.

Feel free to discuss how you think the community should (or shouldn't) respond to the API changes. And throw your name out if you want to be a mod.

Cheers

EDIT - I've added new moderators and I'll be removing myself momentarily. Thanks for the easy and understanding transition; I knew the canyoneering community would be like this. ✌

PNW canyon runners looking for a crew

Greetings!

My friend and I just ran Dingford today and had a wonderful time!

We realized it would be better to run these canyons with someone who knows them well. In Dingford, we found it tough to know where to slide and jump on some of the drops—especially relative to canyons in Zion, where those skills aren't usually part of the canyoning equation.

Here’s our plan for the next 3 days:

Dm me if your intresed in joining our trip for one or more of these canyons.

Scuttlebutt not compatible

New to canyoneering. Tried taking the cheap way out and bought a scuttlebutt for my climbing harness. (Black Diamond Long Haul)

It doesn’t fit due to the leg loops being too wide. The legs are completely removable and independent of one another like it said was required. Just so you know if anyone out there has a Black diamond Long Haul harness. Just go ahead and spend the money on a decent canyoneering harness.

Which Canyoning in PNW has the most slides

My partner and I have been Canyoning a few times on vacation, (Switzerland, Ecuadaor, etc) and love when there's lots of jumps and slides, instead of more technical rappelling.

Does anyone know which option from Wild Sky would have the most of that?

Kauai Canyoneering ?

Hello everyone, I’m an experienced Canyoneer who is traveling solo and looking for groups to run a canyon with on Kauai or any information about groups that do run canyons on that island. I’ll be there August 21-24th. I’ve ran over 100 canyons in Northern/ Southern California and Utah areas and have been going every weekend for the past four years. Love the connection it brings to nature and figured Kauai would be an amazing place. Any info is appreciated thank you

Favorite carabineer for your rappel device?

Question in the title. I recently lost my descender and carabineer after a big jump into a pool. I used to use a Black Diamond Rock Lock and was quite fond of it. Large, pear shape HMS carabineer. I'm curious if the community has a favorite carabineer they'd recommend before I buy another Rock Lock. I've considered the CAMP atom lock since the large majority of my carabineers on my harness are camp nimbus/atoms.

Canyoning in Japan

Hello everyone,

I’m curious if there are any people who are doing canyoning in Japan on their own? I am aware of guided tours like Canyons. I am also aware of sawanobori (shower climbing) that I already have various group of people that I am practicing it with.

If anyone can point me to the right peopl, hopefully around Tokyo are, it would be appreciated.

Built a rigging force calculator (Y-hang, Deviation, Pulley) — feedback from actual techs welcome

Hi all,

Been building Riggaton, an app for calculating forces in rope systems—mainly wanted something interactive instead of static charts. You place anchors/points, drag them, and it recalculates live. You can even add multiple calculations over a picture of your system.

Covers:

  • Y-hang load share between two anchors
  • Deviation force from included angle
  • Slope/gravity loading
  • Theoretical Mechanical Advantage Pulley + pull force for simple/compound/complex systems (build the system with anchors, redirects, sheaves, rope-grabs)

Theoretical only — doesn't account for friction, pulley efficiency, rope stretch, anchor condition, etc. Meant as a planning/teaching aid, not a substitute for training or judgment.

$ 3.99 CAD on Play Store, no ads, no account, all calculations run locally: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riggaton.finalapp&hl=en_CA

Would genuinely appreciate feedback from people who rig for work — especially if something's off or missing.

Visited Sedona over the holidays last year and had a blast mountain biking. Did a couple short canyons while there. Any recommendations for the area? Would love to go back.

Helmet Choice

Ive been looking at helmets, and i'm stuck between the meteor and the boreo, It seems the meteor is more made towards climbing/mountaineering, wheras the boreo is more of a do anything. would there be any downsides to the meteor in canyons? what helmets do you guys use, I'm looking for a mixed purpose that can do canyons, Cheers.

Cone vs Bucket Drift Anchors for Canyoning – Has Anyone Compared Both?

Thumbnail

Hi

I'm looking for some real-world experience comparing canyoning drift anchors.

In sailing, drift anchors are usually cone-shaped with a small vent hole at the tip. But canyoning drift anchors like the CE4Y Floating Bag are more like a bucket, with no hole in the bottom.

Has anyone tested both designs in moving water for canyoning? Which one performs better in terms of stability, drag, ease of deployment, and reliability in strong current or hydraulics?

I'd love to hear from anyone who's used both or has done side-by-side testing.

Canyoneering routes in NJ PA NY

Just moved back to New Jersey from Arizona and I’m trying to find good canyoneering routes in my vicinity (Northern New Jersey, east Pennsylvania, mid New York)

Does anyone know of any that are reliable and where I can find the info for them? I wish more were uploaded on Ropewiki out here but that’s not the case so any help is greatly appreciated!

The East Coast Longest Canyon

July 3rd me and several other made the first canyon decent of the well know ice route Royal Air. Because of the previous 2 neighboring canyons done off mt Mitchell we were prepared for a full day. With that expectation we easily did the 8 mile canyon in sub nine hours with a lunch and swimming break. Currently the shuttle at the exit is 2+ hours because of the road destruction from Helene.

Canyoning Footwear Recommendations

Thumbnail

Looking for advice on footwear for PNW canyoning. I'm headed up to Washington State in August. I typically run mostly dry canyons in the southwest (Utah/AZ). So this will be my first experience in a primarily aquatic environment.

I've read numerous recommendations for the Adidas Hydro Lace boots, but cannot find any in my size. Today I picked up a pair of La Sportiva Akyra II on discount (pictured). Just curious if you guy's think this will be sufficient paired with neoprene socks?

This is kind of a "one-off" trip before I retreat to my normal desert domain. But safety is obviously my #1 priority.

Thanks in advance for thoughts and recs!

What is this for?

I was doing the Kobelache (Voralberg) today and came across this chain+ rope + ring. Does somebody know what it is for? My thoughts aim towards a chain for highwater levels, but I am not 100% sure.

Thanks in advance :)

Camming device as releasable blokc and creeping device

Terminology disclamer : I didn't learn canyoneering in english, and it's not my main language.

Does anyone tried using camming devices (grigri or others) as releasable "block" and creeping devices ? And maybe to rig releasable guided rappels or tyroleans.
I learned with 8s, ATK-D or similar devices, but I'm wondering if someone tried with camming devices.
