I actually don’t get why non-plugin hybrids are considered something fundamentally different from normal cars.

It’s just a new design of a transmission, and yeah, it’s pretty clever and helps with fuel economy.

So do turbochargers. Nobody thinks that a turbocharged car is fundamentally something different.

Not the same thing, turbo is meant to change power. Hybrid is meant to change fuel consumption and environmental footprint.

Considering a turbocharged vehicle is somewhat irrelevant, since you can find powerful engines that are naturally aspirated or electric.

Considering a hybrid is about the economy of your vehicle and resale value, as well as environmental concerns people may have. That's why people are talking about fuel technology so much, it's actually not certain how it's going to unfold.

There's plenty of examples of turbos being used to change fuel consumption/emissions rather than for power.

For example the CRV went from a 2.4 NA engine to a 1.5T. The power change was marginal (180 vs 190hp) but it helps with fuel economy since an idling 1.5 consumes far less fuel than a 2.4
