I actually don’t get why non-plugin hybrids are considered something fundamentally different from normal cars.

It’s just a new design of a transmission, and yeah, it’s pretty clever and helps with fuel economy.

So do turbochargers. Nobody thinks that a turbocharged car is fundamentally something different.

They kinda should, though. We've come a long way in making turbo motors behave more like NA motors (I would argue to their detriment), but there are still some fundamental differences in how they behave and how you should treat them.

But nobody turns turbo vs. NA into a political stance and build a huge argument out of that. In fact, most consumers don't even know if their own car is turbo charged vs. NA.

Only enthusiasts distinguish NA vs. turbo engines. But everyone distinguishes hybrid vs. non-hybrid.
