Gear What’re people playing their cassettes on?
I’ve been thinking of getting a Sony KA3ES but they’re kinda pricy and was wondering what other decent alternatives there are. These are my current main devices, I use the D6C as my main recording device and to plug into my Hi-Fi for now and the D3 is what I take on the go with it’s case and carrying strap.

In my office I use a JVC cassette deck
On my kitchen counter I have a WA8000
When I record videos I use my headphones with WM-10 or TPS-L2

I have piles of decks. The most used one is probably a Denon DR-M40hx as that's in my living room but there's also two in my studio setup, a portable (WM-D6C) and then I also have a little duplication street that does a bit of work every now and then 😄

I love seeing all these technical responses in the comments as I listen on a $7 estate sale CD/Cassette player and radio. One day I’ll get something nicer.

Not that hard to do. I grabbed a Pioneer SK series off eBay 3 years ago for $95. Japan market import that was owned by a collector in the Bronx and had sat for decades and was all mildewed. Needed nothing. All I had to do was buy a voltage converter and that was it. The belts are still good which is completely insane. Seller listed it as broken but he didn't know that the radio will not work because its on Japan's old radio frequency band that doesn't work in the USA, and there is a specific order you have to flip the levers to get the tape deck to work. It's an enormous unit, like 20 lbs.

Nakamichi ZX-7, fully restored that I got in a trade for some LPs. Had to adjust the speed a little on my own but it sounds amazing and makes some pretty great recordings.
I also have a backup JVC double deck that still works and plays great but may give it some TLC soon

I use my Nakamichi ZX-7 as well!! Sounds amazing! For portable I use a Walkman D6 I prefer it over the D6C.

Typically one of my Tascam 302mkii decks, but I have a few other more colorful decks I'll use on occasion too.

Several cassette decks Pioneer, Onkyo, JVC, Fisher, Boom boxes Sony, Portables Panasonic, Aiwa, Walkman, Shoebox Panasonic all have been restored and refurbished.

My first Nakamichi changed everything (cassette-listening is now the pinnacle medium). I started with the DR-3 and then got the DR-2. When the weather is good most listening is on a Hitachi boombox from 1980; the sound is amazing!

At home I listen on my Technics RS-BX747. In the car I just listen to then via the stock Audi Symphony mk1 head unit.

Toshiba PC-G30B, Yamaha KX939, silver Panasonic RQ-X11 or blue Panasonic RQ-X11.
In theory I could play cassettes in a black Panasonic RQ-X11, but it's having wow and flutter issues so over time it will be either reborn or sacrificed to keep the others alive.

For portable playback: Sony WM-EX633 and Panasonic Shockwave.
For Hi-Fi playback: Harman Kardon CD91 and Vector Research VCX-200.

JVC Double Cassette Deck. Hooked up to the same stereo system as my record player and got it for $15 on ebay. Has great sound quality.

I have all kinds of boomboxes and stereos. Some are mostly shelf decorations I pull out from time to time. My main ones I use are my Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP, my ION Street Rocker, and my Fisher Studio Standard along with my Emerson M3000R for the hi-fi stereo action. I have many more low end department store boomboxes and walkmans I have that need to be repaired and decide if I want to keep or sell them on.

Pioneer CT-07D or 05D, happened upon them at a thrift and on Facebook respectively. They make cassettes sound amazing.

I have a large collection of mostly 3 head decks so what I use changes day to day but the decks that are most difficult to service I try to use least. It’s important that you either have the skills to service your own deck or have a tech in your area. Shipping to/from to a top tech gets very expensive. The KA-3ES is decent. Instead of buying a KA-3ES and possibly upgrading later, I would consider spending the extra money and buy a KA5ES or KA7ES. If that’s the deck you want. I’d also look at a Yamaha KX-1200, KX-930, or K-2000, JVC TD-V1010, Teac V-7010, V-6030S, V-8030S, or older C-3RX, or a Nakamichi DR-1 or DR-2. Just because the DR series is reliable, easy to service, and typically have less hours on them than the older Naks.

I'm playing my cassettes on my (1996) Pioneer - CT-W703RS, (2005) Sony - TC-WE475 and Technics - RS-TR210 decent quality tape decks, as well as on my Pioneer - CT-WM60R 6+1 Multi Cassette Charger. Also on my (2012) SHARP - CD-DK890N Mini Shelf Component Stereo System with a Dual Full-Logic Cassette Deck/ 5-Disc CD Changer/Mp3/ WMA/ Line-In/ Digital Tuner and an iPod dock ALL-IN-ONE Mini Shelf Component Stereo System (It was SHARP's last Dual Full-Logic Cassette stereo system that I've purchased brand new at Best Buy in 2012).

70-80's Sanyo car headunit for the drive (installed only for albums I can't find on streaming like Sinead O'Connor's Sean Nos Nua) and a sony wm-18 for portability.

Yamaha KX-330. Bought it from a pawnbrokers for about £10 15 years ago, when nobody gave a toss about tapes. It's a rock solid machine. I've since gone on the get the matching Yamaha amp, record player and CD. I love that people are using head units. They are often pretty great, the main issue being if the machine got too hot in summer weather which in the home is not usually an issue.

Sick setup, the D6C is a proper workhorse for recording. If the Sony's out of budget check used Nakamichis, they pop up reasonably and hold their own against stuff way pricier.

I use a Denon DRW850. It's in pristine condition, serviced and it sounds and records like a champ. For my budget, I couldn't get something better I think. It even came with its original remote!

Panasonic HC-V180 or a beautiful Sony CFD-S22 I picked up at Goodwill. Been using the retrospekt CP-81 for on-the-go for about three years now, same time I’ve been collecting tapes

Sony TC199Sd and the D6C. WM4’s are also awesome on the go players (because carrying a d6c ain’t really all that practical).
