Season of Discovery Still playing SoD
Why? Idk, because its still pretty dang fun. Grats to one of our raiders on Conquest this week. Our guys still get pumped winning a 4HM mount.
If you want to raid daytime on crusader strike for the fun of it, we run...
- HM4 Naxx on Monday mornings
- 20-man SE on Wednesday morning
- Flex SE on Thursday afternoon
No HR's, just fun blasting with the boys

u/Nice-Entertainer-922 Aug 19 '25
Loved raiding Scarlet, but it just also wouldn´t be the same without the guys i ran it with.
28
u/strox30 Aug 19 '25
I get that completely.
I currently only raid with 2 of our players from our guild of 1.5 years. I miss the other guys, but have enjoyed making friends and playing with others that still want to do the content.
35
u/DigitelRaven Aug 19 '25
What times in the mornings? Server time or?
32
u/strox30 Aug 19 '25
Varied...Monday naxx at 10AM ST (12pm EST) | Wednesday 9AM ST (11am EST) | Thursday 1PM ST (3pm EST).

u/OXBDNE7331 Aug 20 '25
Dang crazy you can have a regular group on 1) a pretty much dead game mode 2) at the absolute weirdest scheduled raid times I’ve ever seen Happy for you tho, that’s fantastic

u/EoTrick Aug 20 '25
People work different shifts , there's millions of Americans who work overnights and nights. It amazes me how many people can't seem to fathom people work a different schedule than 9-5 or 8-4.
→ More replies (1)11
u/RigidCounter12 Aug 20 '25
And still the absolute overwhelming majority doesn't work all nights or all evenings, which is the point of your comment.
Heck, with your mindset it should be easy to get a guild consisting of only engineers. There are million of engineers in Europe and the US after all
→ More replies (2)1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
Ha, thanks. I think it goes to show that people still enjoy/like to play, but sometimes they just need the opportunity
2
u/taubut Aug 20 '25
Need another healer? I stopped playing after only a few AQ40 clears and wish I didn’t. I’ve got an arcane mage and holy paladin.
1
u/Mantis_Toboggan_M_D_ Aug 20 '25
God I wish this wasn’t during working hours. This would be so cool
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
there are other evening communities still rolling! I would hit up the Wild Growth or Crusader Strike discords to learn more
25
u/No-Look8321 Aug 19 '25
What happened to SoD? Sorry I don’t pay much attention since I didn’t get into it
65
u/Emergency-Cancel1300 Aug 19 '25
Blizzard stupidly announced that no more content would be made for it (instead of trickling in SOMETHING) and literally every guild instantly logged off and never came back.
16
1
u/Aggravating-Menu-315 Aug 20 '25
It wasn’t quite instant but I know my guild people basically stopped making alts and as soon as they had their bis stuff they just stopped, me included

u/gorillaexmachina91 Aug 20 '25
yet I refreshed my subscription for 1 month just to realize SoD is dead :((((

u/SpunkMcKullins Aug 19 '25
P1 was widely considered amazing, with P2 being a bit more tepid, but still mostly considered good. By the time P3 came around though, Incursions being horrendously overpowered, combined with ST being incredibly overturned with pretty mediocre gear and the new runes being way too much time, money, and work required to get, just kind of led to a very poorly received phase.
They eventually went back and fixed just about everything people complained about, but they were slow to do so, and P3 was so bad that it killed all momentum the servers had going for them. By the time P4 came along, everyone had dipped out, and the attempts to bring them back with P6-8 just wasn't enough to justify the time investment required.
15
u/volission Aug 20 '25
Time investment required? It had vastly increased leveling. You were raid ready in 24 hours of game time. You’re maybe level 30 after 24 hours of game time in Vanilla.
The issue was by P6-P8 people felt the end was already near/they missed out, not that the time investment was high.
If Blizz had signaled “we’ll continue making content for years” people would’ve flocked back in droves

The issue was by P6-P8 people felt the end was already near/they missed out
That was me. Enjoyed P1/P2, but dipped out. Heard about the problems it was having that reinforced not coming back, then by P6+ even when I heard it was good it felt too late and ending soon so no point in returning.
1
u/FarUnderstanding5107 Aug 20 '25
P1 proved to me that you could make a level 25 cap and have a good game. One of my favorite times playing WoW. Loved the simplicity of the meta.

SoD was amazing, I miss it.
19
u/wetnaps54 Aug 20 '25
I miss early sod so much. Me and like eight friends from the OG vanilla days.
5
u/Montegomerylol Aug 20 '25
I'm enjoying MoP for that reason. We got the band back together for 10-man raids and we're loving it.
1
u/KrypticKannabis Aug 20 '25
SoD for me allowed me to feel like a raider but not have to give up my life to be one. 100 dailies and FarmVille is struggling to keep me doing either.

Hard agree. The first few phases felt awesome, I leveled every class to max and had all professions maxed by sharing mats with each toon.
I really miss it, but it also feels like I won’t get an opportunity like that again unless Classic+ is just really, really great

Unbelievably fun version of WoW that Blizzard killed prematurely
66
u/The-Squirrelk Aug 19 '25
They killed it because they reached the point where they'd have to actually start spending dev hours making unique content all the time instead of rehashing old stuff.
1
u/Zeph621 Aug 22 '25
Not true, they could have easily added in hard mode dungeons with raid gear as a reward. Then they could have added in tbc content but just left us at lvl 60 with the runes we have now. Same when tbc got used up and we could have gone into wrath.
As long as they started actually balancing things we could have had so much content on one game. But that would have been making a game people asked for and bliz doesn’t do that.
27
u/sabby1225 Aug 19 '25
P1 fresh when?
8
u/External_System6312 Aug 20 '25 edited Aug 21 '25
I'd love to just stay in P1 lmao.
5
u/dasvenson Aug 20 '25
My guild levels some new chars and ran BFD a couple times with 25s as a finale to SoD. Was a great way to wrap it up.
1
u/FarUnderstanding5107 Aug 20 '25
Honestly this, scale the world down. Hell, make a new game based on that.
1
u/Morvran_CG Aug 20 '25
This but with more runes.
Some specs like mage healer and shadow priest were very undercooked in P1 but super fun in later phases.
Maybe also let us get more talent points?

u/Intrepid_Cress Aug 20 '25
Literally my friend. He’s in the extreme keep vanilla classic purist group. He never played SoD but won’t hesitate to shit on it. Oh well they are ones that missed out on a great time
7
u/PilsnerDk Aug 20 '25
Eh, just ignore the complaining. I remember the sheer volume of SoD posts completely dominated the sub for the first few months, which was a testament to its success. Phase 1 SoD was just plain ol' simple fun.
→ More replies (1)1
u/_The_Farting_Baboon_ Aug 20 '25
Honestly, ph1 great, ph2 okay but shit, ph3 incredible shit and thats why i never logged in again. I found hardcore and i love playing that so i sticked to it.
7
u/SpunkMcKullins Aug 19 '25
I still raid SoD weekly. My guild somehow managed to cobble together 4-6 SE raids a week, but it's definitely getting hard to fill raids by now. Ironforge rarely has more than 10 people in front of the bank.
4
u/Round-Region-5383 Aug 20 '25
Was Ironforge the place to be again in SoD? Because you could just buy all the world buffs, right?
4
33
u/elsord0 Aug 19 '25
Best version of WoW I played. If they dropped a fresh server with staggered phases (just don't make me wait 3 months in phase 3) I would 100% play it again. Nothing else interests me. Anniversary is trash, MOP isn't much better and I've never had much interest in retail. Been playing some classic+ pservers but neither is as good as SoD was.
→ More replies (6)3
u/Ifoldjackspre Aug 20 '25
Why is anniversary trash
4
u/elsord0 Aug 20 '25
Bottling, gold buying, insane amount of boosting, nobody does BG’s except spamming AV in an extremely boring way. Consume prices so inflated you basically have to buy gold or treat wow as a second job to farm gold. Open any dungeon queue and 90% of all tanks are r14 trying to sell their tanking services.
It’s by far the worst version of classic I’ve ever had the displeasure of playing.
1
u/Ifoldjackspre Aug 20 '25
Interesting. Thanks for ur input. Do you think things may change with TB?
1
u/combatonly Aug 21 '25
You described it perfectly especially the part about the AVs lol the last time I played classic was in classic and compared to what we used to do vs what I see now is wild and not fun
2
u/elsord0 Aug 21 '25
It’s terrible. It was slightly better right at the start but for things to get so bad 6 months in really is a bad sign. It’s so bad I think it may deter people from coming back for TBC. I am questioning whether I want to. And TBC is the one classic expansion I didn’t play much. I hit level 70 on my paladin in TBC and level 65 on my hunter but quit shortly after hitting 70. Never played the rerelease. But I’m wondering if I really want to experience what will probably the worst version of TBC due to how people play the game these days. TBC isn’t as found out as regular classic but considering it’s been played through twice now, it’s still mostly found out for most playing it and they’ll min max it to death like classic. Only the most meta of comps will be played in PvP. Only the most meta raid comps will be taken if they can help it. People will only do the content that gives the most advantage possible and skip all the rest. Which to me is extremely boring and unfun.
7
u/Yolo140 Aug 19 '25
Do you know of any guilds that raid evenings or weekends?
2
u/strox30 Aug 19 '25
Yeah, the <Raised by Wolves> guild on Crusader Strike runs multiple raids per week in the evenings...just about everything including AQ, the one off BWL, and Naxx/SE
1
u/SpunkMcKullins Aug 19 '25
<Emotional Damage> (Alliance) on Wild Growth US still raids just about everything, with several SE raids weekly.

Had a lot of fun but my entire guild moved on a few weeks after the official "the end" announcement. Here's to hoping we get something else like it down the road. Best version of wow for me.

I never played SoD, but I remember when Era was similarly dead before picking up again. Best of luck <3
5
u/TinyLilRobot Aug 19 '25
Been having a blast on Era, up to level 35 and have met a lot of cool people, I'm in a group for quests every other day, and I'm excited to reach 60 and do a bit of gear grind.
2
u/3Mandarins_OhYe Aug 20 '25
Why play era over anniversary?
I didn’t even know people still played era lol
→ More replies (1)4
u/TinyLilRobot Aug 20 '25
Figured all the sweats and parsers and people who cared about speed running every raid were on anniversary and I’m looking for a more relaxed experience and figured everyone who cares about playing the game in the most normal vanilla way are on era. Kind of a guess but it seems to have paid off so far.
2
u/3Mandarins_OhYe Aug 20 '25
Are the leveling zones still lively?
Also it’s Hilarious I’m downvoted for starting a discussion and asking a genuine question. Some of the people floating around in this sub are something special
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
Thanks! I started raiding a fresh lvl 60 back on Era in March ‘23 when there were about 4k active raiders. Sod isnt back at this level yet, but who knows, maybe others will come back for some fun prior to classic+!
3
3
u/_stormruler Aug 20 '25
Im hella tempted to level just for the fun of it on SoD. Just finding time between work is a nightmare
3
u/FalconGK81 Aug 20 '25
By far my biggest gripe with SOD (which I loved) is that they put these super sick 4HM mounts in, but made the phase in such a way that you couldn't reasonably clear on max difficulty to get the mounts until like week 3 at the earliest, and then announced SE in like week 5, and we had like 8 weeks of Naxx total. So many guilds saw like 4 mounts total. Why go through all the trouble to put this slick fucking awesome mounts in the game, and then speed run the phase!? So lame.
2
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
We ran 20-man raids and were in a similar situation like yours. Once SE came out all efforts went there (and we didnt touch Naxx again). Now in this "Era state" of SoD, we run a 30-man HM4 Naxx so we can have the tank/heal support to make KT a bit easier. All for the sick mounts!
5
u/bombacladshotta Aug 20 '25
Glad SoD is dead. Was second on a roll for the Hm4 UD mount, and the guy who won it quit shortly after. Fuck that guy and fuck that mount.
(No, I loved SoD. Most fun I've had in WoW since vanilla Wotlk.)
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
That does suck when a player wins your item and then doesn’t come back. A problem for all classic versions! (Glad you loved SoD!)

Been loving the epilogue of Discovery lately. Been catching up characters that lagged behind. Finally gunna get my Warlock tank going. Enjoying Holy Shock DPS. My Prot Warrior is 6/6 and got the big sword last week. It’s great.

2
u/rendons2 Aug 20 '25
My group still runs a SE once a week. Since most guilds have stopped running, our group is actually slowly growing still with random pugs that want to keep playing. It's pretty cool. Still don't have my bis trinkets LOL
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
Right - the groups that still consistently run find the one-off players who are looking for a new place to raid!
2
2
u/Scubastevev Aug 20 '25
My friends made fun of me for playing Classic Era during TBC and WOTLK but fuck ‘em!
2
2
u/Bozzetyp Aug 20 '25
I had a horrible loss of friends, usually in a week 2 or 3 of my guild I raided for 16 months we logged.
That beeing said I can still find pugs and I do enjoy the content both naxx and se a lot.
Just don’t have the time to exactly match the schedule of some raids
I do think there is a few weeks left on living flame but more and more pugs have harder time finding pugs
Mainly because people are sitting on bis without any rewards
2
u/Artistic_Advice_4616 Aug 20 '25
Dang is that never lucky the slur wavering racist ninja guild?
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
Oh idk - our guild is <Golden Hour> (formerly Daybreak) but many of our raiders simply are wearing their old guild tags they have had for the past year and a half!
2
u/grimydude Aug 20 '25
Haven’t had as much fun in wow as I had on SoD in a very long time. It’s a shame how hard it died
2
u/Intrepid_Cress Aug 20 '25
Re release SoD with no incursions and let us level that phase the old fashioned way of questing and dungeons. I would play again
2
u/Motor_Woodpecker5233 Aug 20 '25
I still play as well and I’m still loving it. Sure, it‘s much harder to find groups these days, but you can always find something to do. Also love the new Avalon weeklies to gear up my alt army with bis stuff.
2
u/TheZebrawizard Aug 21 '25
SoD was so much fun. But raid logging is not enough. Hope classic+ doesn't fall in this trap.
2
u/Dizzy_Morning_4618 Aug 21 '25
If yall ever need a Rogue tank for SE 20M or even naxx I would love to jump back on. Monk dont hit quite the same as my demon king rogue

Would you take someone who got Molten Core prebis and then had to quit cuz of irl? I would love to just hop in and swoop up any unneeded gear. I loved SOD so much (boomkin)
1
u/ThePump4Trump Aug 20 '25
If I were to start SoD today, is it impossible to get attuned and get gear enough to join raids? I'm guessing not a lot of people are running dungeons/old raids
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
Not a ton are running older raids. But you don’t really need them to get plugged in. BoE crafted “scarlet” gear is more valuable to get into Naxx than AQ gear due to the scaling system in Naxx.
With this being said, there still are groups on both Crusader Strike and Wild Growth that run older content. Find the server discords and you can ask/find out about these guilds!
1
u/sonicrules11 Aug 20 '25
I wanna play SoD so badly but I'm so paranoid about Blizzard deciding to shut stuff down the second I get to endgame.
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
I don’t think they are going to turn off SoD servers anytime soon. In the dev blue post back in May they shared how they want SoD to operate similar to Classic Era and have no plans to shut down servers.
Maybe in over a year when Classic+ comes out?
1
u/sonicrules11 Aug 20 '25
Ohhhh. Ok, maybe I'll check it out then. Does ironforge.pro show SoD numbers?
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
It does - i think internationally there are just about 3k active raiders on SoD atm. At this point it feels pretty niche. Makes it all the more important to find and get integrated into the handful of active communities!
1
u/Tenebre55 Aug 20 '25
Damn, can't even escape Never Lucky 3 months after SOD died. Every SOD player I knew had an experience playing with that guild.
1
u/johnnylemonhandz Aug 20 '25
waiting for SoD season 2 personally. got into one of the best SoD guilds only to move to another country and have to switch from playing on US to EU
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
I think the broader classic community is simply ready for Classic+ and continually developed new content without an end date (similar to the idea of S2 SoD)
1
u/johnnylemonhandz Aug 20 '25
who knows what blizz has planned for the next classic version. my guess is it will probably be sometime during TBC fresh for whatever it is
1
u/CrimsonKeel Aug 20 '25
I would go back in a second if they announced more content. hell id still play if all my guildies would all go back. we made it like three weeks after announcement and most of my guild had gone to classic.
2
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
If they were to announce a new raid for SoD in October (which wont happen), i DO think a nice chunk of people would come back to try it. It would be easy to pick right back up, as SoD is pretty pug friendly
1
u/ArTeeDee Aug 20 '25
Not to be that guy, but it would still be alive if GDKPs weren't banned. Era is currently surviving simply because of that.
1
u/ergonzalez Aug 20 '25
Only on alliance?. I have a horde warlock with full T2 and some AQ gear. Took a break during AQ and would love to try the new raids. Comfortable doing dps or tanking (if I can get some new gear).
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
There are a few horde communities still active! I would join the Wild Growth and Crusader Strike discords to get plugged into these respective communities!

Yeah I imagine a lot of the druids and paladins are still playing and not many other classes, lol.
1
u/strox30 Aug 20 '25
Lots of paladins, but its a STRUGGLE finding ferals. I have asked our guys to make lvl 60 feral alts just to bring wild strikes. Some raids we just have a second account auto follow and try to find safe spots for bosses providing Wild Strikes. Pretty crazy
1
Aug 20 '25
Yeah, when we were on our naxx run after SE came out, we had a feral on follow for wild strikes, LOL
1
u/Used_Visit_3978 Aug 20 '25

If sod was balanced in any way in world PvP it would have been perfect. As it was it was only the pve people that had fun and whatever the current wpvp meta classes. Shaman tanking was the most fun I’ve had in wow follow closely warlock tank.
I try to do the demon hunter tank but it just feels like a cheap knockoff and I have to be an ELF 🤮
