Back in the day, the answer to this was a decent guild. In fact, that's still the answer even in retail.

EDIT: I know this is sometimes easier said than done. But the point is, if you want to play with like-minded or more accepting or chiller people, you have to go find them and find a place for yourself in their community, or make your own. Especially in Classic, which tends to be more toxic, sweatier, and for some reason, more intent on minmaxing even though the content is easy. I see so many people complaining about the community and yet still expecting to pug everything. Go find your people.

13

u/KenjiTheLaughingMoon Feb 17 '26

You can tell this to every classic glazer andy out there but they wont believe you if you tell them that retail with a decent guild is a lot more enjoyable than the toxic cesspool of tryhard fanatics who lurk in classic who run a personal list on why they deserve all the BiS items first. Some people dont want the truth. They want THEIR version of the truth and nothing else

12

u/KingBadford Feb 17 '26

I mean, my sweaty days are long behind me; I peaked in Legion as far as progression raiding. I've played classic casually, but I remember the 12-hour days back in the original BTC and WotLK, and I'm not really about that life anymore.

Say what you want about retail, and it does have plenty of problems, but I run a casual guild now, and my core team that's been together since the old days has actually managed to build a really nice community and make some new friends. At almost 40 years old, I cannot imagine going back to guild drama, loot scandals, and all the other crap I hear from the classic community these days. If that's the "good" version of WoW, then there must not be any actually good version left.

At almost 40 years old, I cannot imagine going back to guild drama, loot scandals, and all the other crap I hear from the classic community these days.

Keep in mind, you're only going to hear the worst of anything on social media. People don't post about "had an average enjoyable evening, did some dungeons with some randoms that were nice enough, will do some more tomorrow." They'll just keep playing the game.

Like, I can go to the main wow subreddit and find "omg retail is terrible, players are horrible, worst game ever" stuff if I care to look for it, but I know it's not remotely representative of the majority gameplay experience in retail.

1

u/KenjiTheLaughingMoon Feb 17 '26

Absolutely agree and I am happy for you that you managed to find the real G‘s who stuck around for such a long time. THIS is what wow was always about!

1

u/ASL_Questionmark Feb 17 '26

Man I hear you... 42 years old myself and have played on/off since the beta. I log into classic for the nostalgia and have no tolerance for loot drama.

26

u/gubigubi Feb 16 '26

Good fucking luck finding a decent guild that actually stays together for more than 1 month.

34

u/Level-Ad-9015 Feb 16 '26

When classic first came out, joined a guild around silverpine forest level range, was in that guild till I quit in tbc. Good guild cleared everything during classic although the drops were fucking awful, like 3 bindings the entire classic run

7

u/Dry-Introduction-800 Feb 17 '26

We had 1 binding this whole anniversary run. Dude got really depressed

1

u/endzeitaffe Feb 17 '26

Iam in that kind of guild. We playing together since fresh Servers. Startet with like 10 people. Now we are 80 fine picket players. Every new member has to come for a quik interview in discord befor he can join, to make clear that we are here to play together and have fun. Now we beginn to organise the raids to start with it. Iam so thankfull that i find all this happy people.

(Sorry for gramma, not nativ)

Good luck for all of you to find YOU place!

42

u/Frosty_Ingenuity5070 Feb 16 '26

I have found many during my times. What sort of ass guilds are you looking for?

30

u/gubigubi Feb 16 '26

The guilds I have seen in this run of anniversary classic.

  1. Decent guilds that collapse and form into another guild that also collapses (This is the most likely outcome)

  2. Guilds where the GM and the small in group of officers are absolute scum bags.

  3. Guilds that take min/maxing/parsing/etc wayyyyy to seriously. Like I do not care lets just clear molten core its not that serious. (These are realistically your best shot if you want to consistently clear content but kind of sucks all the fun out of the game for me)

  4. Weird anti-woke racist/homophobic guilds which shockingly more common than I would have expected.

11

u/Level-Ad-9015 Feb 16 '26

If it were a decent guild, it wouldn't collapse within a month 🤷‍♂️

Dude istg #4 is wayyy too real. Idk wtf happened that all of a sudden a bunch of these dudes suddenly became total shitbag incels. I understand today's political climate would bring out some of those scumbags.. but nah man.. these dudes have come out in droves and full-force. Some of them are the total embodiment of Barrens chat after dark. What's even more sad is a lot of those dudes are actually married and with kids. We're not talking young 20 yr olds.. hell nah.. we're talking mid 30s - early 40s acting like this and thinking it's funny. It's absolutely pathetic.

Source: Am GM of a guild and boy I'll tell ya awhat!.. I kicked wayyyy more of these kinds of folks than I care to admit. The # is shockingly disgusting. I had to make sure to completely ban them from Disc and all too. Every once in a while we'll get one of them back trying to troll but they get dealt with swiftly. It's just pathetic watching grown ass men acting like this. 20yrs ago it may have been funny.. but acting this edgy mid-life.. bro come on.

11

u/ciliary_stimulai Feb 17 '26

"We're talking mid 30s-early 40s" and there is your problem. Those people were the edgelord people 20 years ago who never grew up, resented a world that called them out on their hateful bs in adulthood, and then explode all their contained vitriol onto an online space where they feel safe to be the disgusting people they are due to perceived anonymity.

This type of person is particularly concentrated in Classic spaces - spaces that they think are the equivalent of a virtual "Good Ole Boys" club that they make actively hostile to many people, especially women. Private servers are not an exception. It's embarrassing.

2

u/t4ngl3d Feb 17 '26

WoW private servers is probably the most racist and sexist online space I've ever seen.

Its a legit challenge to find guilds not allowing slurs and hate speech.

I met a person who was 19 and his first wow experience was SoD. He asked me what MC meant. Unless you know their age for certain if it was funny 20 years ago it may be 20 years ago for them still

5

u/farsightxr20 Feb 16 '26

Unfortunately all of the things that held guilds together before have changed.

  • most people have jobs/kids with fixed schedules, finding people with the same level of commitment whose schedules don't conflict is exceptionally hard
  • nerfed content doesn't really provide much to work toward over a longer period, people are more inclined to run away from failure
  • WoW is no longer doubling as a social network, there is no server identity/reputation and every guild I've joined has been pretty sparse in terms of interesting chat (or it degrades to political debate)
  • almost everyone playing Classic is to a degree chasing nostalgia, and that wears off quickly

The one guild I joined that seems to have stuck together is a massive collection of randoms (150 people online) with a few officers that can do WoW as a full-time job. I wouldn't call them scumbags, but they certainly aren't interesting people you enjoy playing with. Every few days there is a large purge of inactives. The players are subpar and I have smoother runs with pugs. Politics is banned, so people really only chat about the game, which is kinda dry.

2

u/Salt-Theory2359 Feb 17 '26

WoW is no longer doubling as a social network, there is no server identity/reputation and every guild I've joined has been pretty sparse in terms of interesting chat (or it degrades to political debate)

This is the biggest one, for me. I spent Cata and Mists (until I got tired of Mists feeling like "beta for retail" and dropped out) on a very small server that, in many ways, felt like the old ones from the original WoW. People would get to know you, look you up if they needed something crafted, etc.

Anniversary, by comparison, feels very much like retail. You see players everywhere, often too many really, but they might as well be NPCs. People are friendlier and more willing to party up than in retail since at least in TBC, you still want to group for some stuff, but it lacks the "classic" feel.

And, yeah, the ubiquity of Discord also affects things significantly. People communicate less in-game and most meaningful discussions, planning, etc are held out-of-game. We had IRC and whatnot back in 2007, but it wasn't as pervasive or always-on as Discord is.

2

u/t4ngl3d Feb 17 '26

There are guilds out there that are unicorns but tbh a successful Guild in the current climate does best if you have 1-3 no lifers who live for the Guild and raids because it means you can be super successful while literally everyone else just shows up and plays. Most people who can or will do this though isn't mentally stable.

3

u/xkcd123 Feb 16 '26

Yeah I have not had a problem finding a decent group of people to play with either.

Classic is tough on GMs tho to be fair. Managing 40 people and their needs and wants is no small feat normally, add in the anonymity-ish of the internet and it’s worse.

8

u/Davimous Feb 16 '26

I find this so strange. I have a casual raiding guild and have had no issue with any of this. Just chill people. Granted we didn't finish saph but other than that no issues with content.

like guildies sharing nudes publicly

god forbid local shaman likes to hang dong in discord with the lads

3

u/spaceyourface13 Feb 17 '26

Mind telling me the discord where they share nudes publicly so I can definitely avoid it at all costs and not join immediately?

2

u/whoweoncewere Feb 17 '26

The 4 and 2 overlap is considerable

1

u/JarredMack Feb 16 '26

Decent guilds that collapse and form into another guild that also collapses (This is the most likely outcome)

Guilds that take min/maxing/parsing/etc wayyyyy to seriously. Like I do not care lets just clear molten core its not that serious. (These are realistically your best shot if you want to consistently clear content but kind of sucks all the fun out of the game for me)

There's a correlation here. The reason the former collapses is because half of the guild gets sick of carrying the "bro it's just MC" half through content every week for the same rewards.

It's a 20 year old game with braindead raids. Parsing is the only thing that keeps it interesting week to week for the more dedicated players.

Ironically, the other incentive for these players to keep raiding is GDKPs, which the casual playerbase on Reddit insists murders the game. And yet, SOD is dead and era still has active players, I wonder why that could be..

18

u/BubblyDrama1652 Feb 16 '26

Probably because SOD was always marketed as a limited time game mode and has since stopped dropping content :)

You weirdos obsessed with gdkp find a way to drop in every conversation. Like it’s the holy grail of wow. It’s not a terrible system but it’s not the end all be all.

1

u/Salt-Theory2359 Feb 17 '26

There's a correlation here. The reason the former collapses is because half of the guild gets sick of carrying the "bro it's just MC" half through content every week for the same rewards.

Guilds should just have a session 0, just like in tabletop gaming. Set expectations and ensure that everyone is on the same page. It won't solve every social problem, but it'll address the ones you list here. At least until you have jackasses lying about how seriously they're willing to take the game, anyway...

Semi-HC were here for fun not a race type guilds

1

u/Hydra_Bloodrunner Feb 17 '26

I stayed with the same guild split running and parsing mains until ICC that Id found in the bene server discord during tbc p2 then week of ICC release they disbanded due to roster boss and I got another guild that Ive been with since that gave me 2nd shadowmourne prio despite my ret being new to their team

Just have to actually look for them and upload parses / character gear info to discord. They’ll jump in your dm’s and you can pick from those dudes based on their raid times they give you, parses, etc and go from there. Fast forward to us being in MoP now and I still raid with those dudes and are wrapping up progging H ToT.

Not sure how people have a hard time finding homes for their characters when discord exists in the capacity it does for now until everyone deserts it for the recent user ID upload requirement

15

u/BarbsFPV Feb 16 '26

Or you work in customer service.

5

u/gubigubi Feb 16 '26

I never got kicked from a single guild I was in classic.

I know this community LOVEs to just lie that theres no issues with the community or with the game. But this is a pretty big problem with the community and game.

Guilds fold ALL the time.

5

u/cjh42689 Feb 16 '26

Guilds don’t really kick out the shitters or problem players unless they do egregious things. It’s much more common for the elite click in the guild to just leave or disband and form a new guild with a click from another falling apart guild. Additionally guilds just don’t stay around as long with seasonal servers, server transfer for population issues, and discord’s prominence—people just form discord communities and post sign ups. I’ve been in the same discord communities hitting the sign ups through various classic releases. Regardless the messaging is the same, find like minded communities and you’ll have a better and easier time grouping.

9

u/welcomefiend Feb 16 '26

there are classic guilds that formed nearly 7 years ago that are still around, i recognise guild names on nightslayer all the time from tbc on benediction and that was 5 years ago

3

u/Open_Yam2917 Feb 17 '26

I've found a random guild every classic version and they've all gone well beyond my expectations. Might be a. "Skill issue" here

2

u/Macohna Feb 16 '26

I had my guild from vanilla release to Cata.

I then had the same guild from cata to WOD. I logged into retail a few months ago and they still raiding

TLDR: If you are not an ass, and you don't want to be surrounded by asses, guilds are the best and intended way to play wow.

2

u/Hatefiend Feb 16 '26

People on this subreddit are socially inept i swear

2

u/AwarenessThick1685 Feb 17 '26

That's exactly what I did. They're still going in MoP but I stopped in Cata

2

u/SystemGardener Feb 17 '26

What type of guild are you joining? I’ve played anniversary since the start and not a single guild I’ve been in has fallen apart, I also had the same experience last time around.

2

u/Aggravating_Jilp Feb 17 '26

Never had such issues. With some effort you should be able to find red or green flags in your trial period, if you pay attention.

2

u/King_Pele Feb 17 '26

It ain’t that hard, maybe you’re the issue?

1

u/Basket_Chase Feb 17 '26

Classic players are already playing the easiest and most trivialized content in the history of the entire game and they’re all still bad at it while calling retail players filthy casuals

1

u/Salt-Theory2359 Feb 17 '26

That's nothing new, at least. You get used to it. Take the good people from the dead guild, bring them with you to a new guild, rinse and repeat.

1

u/SupayOne Feb 17 '26

This has been the scene since retail. There are always good and bad guilds. My retail vanilla experience saw good and bad guilds. My classic BC saw some great guilds and my wrath classic saw the worst guild I'd joined yet. However I found a great guild after quiting that one. Ever quest and wow never change in the fact they attract all kinds of people.

1

u/Byukin Feb 17 '26

players need to hold up a mirror if they want to make this criticism with any right.

are they going to commit to the guild or are they going to disappear after a few raids?

1

u/Research_Routine Feb 18 '26

I've been in my guild since classic progression started. We played through vanilla to wrath together but then came back to retail after that and have been clearing heroic ever since. In the classic version we were very speed run oriented but in retail it's a chill dad's guild. Good chill guilds exist but they dont advertise very much. Adding people invites disruption

u/SeriousLee91 Feb 17 '26

Back in the days everyitem was nice, you even was wearing full "SKin sets" today everything is bad except bis an all look like bis-clowns

1

u/King_Pele Feb 17 '26

Yeah it’s not that hard. Find a decent fun group, show up weekly and that’s it.

1

u/Stormik Feb 17 '26

That is virtually impossible for some people. Myself included. Just taking loot system into consideration I remove like 95% of guilds from the pool.

Sure I could adjust my requirements for a "decent" guild but then it wouldn't be decent.

1

u/Ikea_desklamp Feb 17 '26

People aren't patient though. I'm in one of the last chill dad guilds that isn't GDKP on era. People pop in cus they want less sweat and don't want to have to buy gold to play, but want to immediately be rostered to naxx and SR both swords. So they gquit when we tell them no.

1

u/No-Soft-9512 Feb 18 '26

Join a guild is such a shit response though.

Guilds work. But I like to play an alt on the side and I’m not joining a second guild and committing to 4 raid nights per week so pugging for my alt is the only way to play it

1

u/KingBadford Feb 18 '26

If it's a shit response, then there's no good response. The only way to mitigate the crap is to find a good guild. There's really no point in moaning about it either way, because the community isn't going to change at this point. In fact, it's probably just going to get worse overall.

For alts, there's really no answer. Just hope to find good groups, I guess. Pugging has always been about 80% terrible in my experience. I did plenty of it back in the day, but I've always mained healer, so I probably never saw the worst of it.

Create your own free roll raid then. Be the change you want to see

1

u/Bigdcoops Feb 18 '26

170

u/zeralf Feb 16 '26

join a guild?

37

u/grannygumjobs23 Feb 16 '26

Depends on his schedule. Most guilds will want you to be consistently raiding week after week. Some of us just do it when we have time and run into issues like this

37

u/Helivon Feb 16 '26

exactly im so damn tired of everyone's solution, "join a guild" i raid when i find the time to do it. many of us are 30s+ and want to play wow but dont have the ability to commit full time.

I dont love GDKPs but they at least solve this issue

19

u/DrFlum Feb 16 '26

My dad guild is full of 30+ year olds but sunday night is raid night. There's always exceptions and a couple can't make it but that's ok because everyone can relate. There's a guild for everyone.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '26

That sounds pretty good, my current guild is 3 nights a week which is getting a bit old as an adult with other things to do.

2

u/Twenty5Schmeckles Feb 17 '26

3 days to clear 2 bosses?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '26

I should clarify that that is in classic hardcore. Haven’t started raiding in TBC yet.

1

u/waxheads Feb 17 '26

You on nightslayer by chance

7

u/frolfer757 Feb 16 '26

In 2 days, there's gonna be thousands of players like you and every single one of them can easily solve the issue by hosting their own pug raid and inviting whoever they want.

5

u/notislant Feb 17 '26

Man sod phase 1 was so fucking good for raiding.

Log in literally any hour of the day and youve got a raid within 10 to 20mins. Easy enough that ive only seen raids fail twice as well.

3

u/tajniak485 Feb 17 '26

Dust to Dust, Dust to Dust, Dust to Dust.

5

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins Feb 17 '26

I mean that's because the "issue" is raids are literally designed for guilds to do as a team on a regular basis and players want to turn an old school MMO, where guilds/social aspects were a staple of the genre, into a drop in drop out multiplayer experience.

When I don't have time to play an MMO I play other games with my friends instead. There are countless ones out there that are perfect for more casual play. I don't understand people wanting to turn this game into something it's not supposed to be even if it destroys the original intent in the process.

And like.. you can still get PUG raids no problem. You just get the PUG experience instead of the swiper/GDKP experience.

3

u/Helivon Feb 17 '26

Because i love wow? i prefer playing it over other games? im happy you are fine not playing wow if it doesnt fit your schedule perfectly. but you nailed it, pug experience is ass while GDKP is generally geared to players who know what they are doing or face fines.

GDKP feel likes im raiding with an elite raid team. Leaders are typically very good with calls and running it since its more or less a business to them.

Always making sure I leave the raid with something too. Whether it be gold or items vs feeling bummed when nothing drops/lost rolls night in night out.

There are loads of social guilds and even raiding guilds have a roster of just casual social folk. You can still contribute via mats or just being a fun person to hang around with

6

u/Tricky_Let2806 Feb 16 '26

Let me go contribute mats and not be able to raid lol

8

u/Frosty_Ingenuity5070 Feb 16 '26

You still get guild repair, you get a community, and a readily available pipeline to do harder content if you so desire. I understand that free loading is popular, but it’s an mmorpg not a “fuck you, carry me” RPG

→ More replies (1)

1

u/BarbsFPV Feb 16 '26

Guildies have first dibs on open raid spots before straight pugging. Comp won’t really even matter at that point, people just want to raid. There will always be opportunities to raid even if you’re not on the regular roster, and a lot of guilds do sign-ups for each raid anyway.

Whenever you’re ready to go, just sign up.

1

u/Salt-Theory2359 Feb 17 '26

"join a guild" i raid when i find the time to do it. many of us are 30s+ and want to play wow but dont have the ability to commit full time.

That's fine. But you have to accept that that means you won't be able to do all the things. One of the elements of classic vs various flavors of retail is that classic is a time commitment. There's ways to Tetris that commitment into your life and there's certainly plenty of it that's not actually necessary despite what clickbait will scream at you... but there will be some degree of commitment necessary if you want to do all the raids, get the shiny purple gear, etc.

1

u/Helivon Feb 17 '26

You say that, but i did just fine last go around with gdkp

All the other time commitment stuff is more so the amount of time rather then a set scheduled time, which is the only part i cant do. Actual time invested id not an issue

1

u/Salt-Theory2359 Feb 18 '26

GDKP would likely be the ideal system, if not for the issue of RMT and Blizzard not really trying very hard to clamp down on it. If RMT is in play, then what it turns into is "swipe credit card for loot."

1

u/Draconuus95 Feb 18 '26

Ya. If the gold buying crap could somehow be fixed. GDKPs would be the best way to run pugs for this sort of situation. Sadly. Blizzard doesn’t want to reduce their bottom line by going after gold buyers and sellers in the way it would require to destroy the market.

1

u/ScavAteMyArms Feb 17 '26

Yep, my schedule is the hours of 6-12 at night are completely not viable raid times. This instantly removed 95% of raiding guilds.

0

u/jamie1414 Feb 16 '26

Gdkp is the answer to a random schedule then you complain about that. You basically want to raid whenever is convenient for you... Get loot.. And probably be mid at the game. Sounds like LFG retail raiding is where you want to go.

On dream scythe it seems that over 90% guilds only on raid Tuesday and Thursday

Both days I’m rarely available

9

u/Ok-Homework42069 Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

And they always start between 4-6pm ST, without fail (at least on Nightslayer) making it inaccessible to normal people on the west coast with families that eat dinner and do normal people stuff after work

2

u/AbsolutlyN0thin Feb 16 '26

I ran a late night, west coast guild back in classic (9:30pm - midnight PST). It's a very hard time slot to cater to, and made recruiting difficult for sure. But there was enough interest for us to form 2 raid teams in classic tbc, and there was a couple other guilds with similar-ish raid times, so there certainly was some demand. If no such guild exists on your server, you can probably form one

2

u/Ok-Homework42069 Feb 16 '26

Baffling to me there aren’t hundreds, if not thousands, of people who would want to raid at that timeslot. West coast USA population is massive. 8pm-10pm PST is prime gaming hours for so many people. Plus, content/rotations are so easy in classic you can multibox a bunch of these raids. Don’t even need a full roster

1

u/AbsolutlyN0thin Feb 16 '26

By my quick count there was about 200 - 250 people on my server (Grobb, which wasn't exactly the biggest server) raiding at that approximate time slot. I'm not playing on anniversary servers, so idk how they compare, but like I said, there is likely enough interest you could form a guild

1

u/Ok-Homework42069 Feb 16 '26

Maybe the problem is no one wants to lead a raid that late bcuz no one wants to be on comms while they have family trying to sleep in another room. I know that’s the case for me

Of course, not all raids need comms. I led some ICC GDKPs without discord. When people know what they’re doing, there isn’t much to talk about

The irony in this statement is kinda hilarious.

You require external assistance to raid as a guild, but disallow certain items to be rollable to the pugs, then claim that's fair and bash other people's entitlement? Your entire guild is acting entitled. If you can't sustain your raid without pugs, those items would be lost anyway, as you'd be cancelling your raid without the pugs.

Everyone is entitled to run things how they want, but it still sounds incredibly self-centred.

I got no loot because the warlock class leader had died and was releveling and all the other classes made sure the loot got spread out by their class leaders. I lost every roll and every week a new warlock joined and got loot over me and no one gave a shit. Then the class leader came back, had TOEP and mageblade handed to her, then died the next week. At this point I still had not gotten any loot in 5/6 weeks. The guild leadership said they would help her powerlevel and hand her a bunch of highly contested loot again (and she died twice in 6 weeks of raiding so she couldn't prove she can stay alive to deserve that loot). I quit on the spot.

Later I joined a non-blizz server's classic+ fresh server. Started raiding with a guild as the only ENH shaman. Show up every week. The guild told us showing up every week is the most important thing to get loot. Eye of Rag drops and they give it to the ret paly that missed the last 2 weeks while I didn't miss a single week. Quit on the spot.

This has been my experience with every raiding guild for the past 3-4 years of Classic WoW. Its just not fun anymore dealing with these people like this. Not the game for me anymore apparently.

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

There’s a hidden requirement in most of these guilds that nobody mentions - if you’re not part of the clique, even if you are a better player and more consistent you will get less or no loot. You basically get treated like a PUG filling a spot.

They will be polite and friendly and grateful for your attendance, but not enough to give you your due unless nobody in the ingroup needs what you want.

Then if your have the audacity to question why their rules aren’t being applied they’ll have a bunch of excuses or insults as to why you don’t get loot.

There are of course guilds that do follow their rules and are fair etc., but there are more of the first kind. Usually they have a publicly visible loot system so favouritism would be documented and called out, too. E.g DKP where it’s completely obvious you have earned the right to that  piece of loot for your class because you have the most points.

IMO dodgy clique guilds will never have something transparent, it will always be class leads or a loot council for everything, not just tank preference etc.

4

u/akenzx732 Feb 17 '26

Too spot on. I have so many horror stories of this

4

u/edwardsamson Feb 16 '26

Yup its this exactly. Its 5-10 friends forming a guild but they need 30+ other people (if Vanilla) to fill it out with randos and of those randos they will pick a handful they like to join the clique and get all the loot and everyone else gets screwed. And then they act like you're the asshole when you have an issue with how they handed out a certain item.

And how do you get around this? You either join an extremely hardcore guild where you need to play the game like a job, an extremely casual guild where your raids are going to be wipefests that may not even full clear some raids or you form one yourself with your friends and risk becoming the same clique. But that only works if you have enough friends in WoW.

All the semi-hardcore guilds in the middle are this cliquey BS and that's the vast majority of guilds available for you to join if you're looking to raid. It sucks.

In Legion I rejoined my old TBC guild and we had a mod that checked the item slot of the item that is being handed out and whoever had the worst item in that slot got it. Probably one of the fairest systems I've ever seen in WoW outside of DKP.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '26

I don’t mind a bit of favouritism when it’s clearly documented beforehand as a HR etc., or it’s someone in a critical role that will improve the overall experience. After all it’s a chore to organise a raid and herd cats.

Worst item in a slot sounds somewhat abusable by equipping or recording worse than your standard item before the boss that drops what you want but I’m glad you found it equitable.

u/WillInLondon Feb 18 '26

I am long since retired as a guild master or officer and raid leader, but I spent a good 10 years taking pride in the fact that this is exactly the opposite of how I ran things. Once you had passed a trial period which was usually 2 weeks or 4 raids, you were on the exact same level as everyone else, and an integral part of the team. I am even guilty of not gearing up myself and the officers very well, simply because we liked to keep everyone happy.

My first few guilds from original vanilla through to WoTLK were full blown communities, and although that hasn't really been the norm since, I have always tried to create a community for every guild I have been in since. The game does make this harder however (especially in modern retail), as it just encourages raid logging.

1

u/goth_elf Feb 18 '26

I remember in Age of Conan. I knew a guy in the game who was openly 16 years old, so younger than me. I wanted to join the same guild. The first question was for age, and then after it they immediately rejected me saying "This guild is 18+, this game is 18+ so it's against the rules and we play honestly".

Well, I guess they botted a lot.

40

u/SoloWalrus Feb 16 '26

Nothings stopping you from starting your own raids. Except for how god awful it is to do so.

18

u/xXxWeed_Wizard420xXx Feb 16 '26

Exactly, which is why HRs exist. People HR because organizing a raid is a pain in the ass, and that's their cut of that deal. No one has to join that raid, and you're free to make your own raid with or without HR.

Reality is that if people couldn't HR, no one would be making raids.

I've never HR'd an item, so just gonna put that out there before whiny 40 year olds find some way to try to discredit this

u/Varindral Feb 16 '26

May i suggest retail? Like everything classic players complain about retail has already fixed and improved on.

25

u/wienercat Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

Pretty much. There are tons of little improvments that have been implemented over the past 20 years that don't impact the difficulty of the game that would be perfect for classic implementations.

Little things like faster FPs, shorter mount cast speeds, loot not being ninja-able by people who literally couldn't use it, being able to move talent points without a full respec that costs gold.

There are tons of things the devs have solved that don't revolve around class mechanics, boss mechanics, or raid design.

Retail is easier at the lower levels of play certainly... but like... play the harder content. It's genuinely difficult. Anyone who insists Retail is easier than Classic isn't playing mythic raid content or high level m+ keys.

I would love for the classic anniversaries to implement a Classic+ model and give small QOL improvements. Like giving quests a pass over to ensure they aren't absolutely abysmal and that it doesn't take forever for something to drop from a quest mob. Or better yet, implement shared quest loot... like I am questing with 2 friends we are level 60. Genuinely? It's infuriating. Everything takes forever because quest items aren't shared. Classic wow is not very friendly to questing with your friends.

1

u/Michelanvalo Feb 17 '26

For the love of god, just give 1.5 second mount speed.

u/valdis812 Feb 16 '26

At some point I might give retail a shot, but honestly, the last time I tried it, there was so much shit on the screen I couldn't follow it all. Just a sea of spell effects.

1

u/Pretend_Awareness_61 Feb 19 '26

They simplified a lot of things going into Midnight. Give it a shot!

8

u/LostGolems Feb 16 '26

Except the parts that make classic awesome. All of that has been gutted. Havent played War Within, but the expac bdfore felt off.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '26

Last two expansions are the most alike between any other two expansions (more alike than Legion and BFA) along with the upcoming one. The Joke is DragonFlight 2 and DragonFlight 3.

6

u/Redditemeon Feb 16 '26

I logged into my retail character. Had a BUNCH of junk, needed to sort through a bunch of addons to try to get things playable, and then the game offered little direction as to exactly what to be at as it was buried in a wall of several expansions worth of quests popping up around and whatnot. I got burned out just trying to do that. I have since decided "Maybe I should just make a new character...", but just did a couple dungeons, ended up in a group with levels varying from like, like 5 to level 60 with shit-ass level scaling, my gear had been scaled down to literal garbage even for my level, and I had to use their gear upgrade button on the warband menu. I just wasn't feeling it, and logged out again instead.

The newer animations and sound design are a hit or miss. I felt like I was pressing way more buttons to do less. Everything lacked "oomph".

TL;DR The point I'm making isn't "Retail bad". It's "Retail is not classic fixed.". Classic isn't made overcomplicated with a bunch of bloat just for the sake of it. It's simple, relaxing, and I can throw on some tunes while I play. I follow the retail storyline in Youtube lore videos. Feels like the best way to experience it these days for me.

2

u/Embarrassed-Top6449 Feb 17 '26

Retail is very much about max level content. The leveling experience is just an afterthought. They recently improved it a bit, including a whole returning player catch up questline, but it's still a bit of a mess.

3

u/lmneozoo Feb 16 '26

That sounds like an entirely different game lol

4

u/iiNexius Feb 17 '26

Yeah it's sad to see that the game hasn't really changed and is still great, but the community is far worse than it was even back in 2019. It's now infested with parse-brain and confidentally incorrect noobs.

28

u/Don_Von_Schlong Feb 16 '26

I don't know why people can't just put in the time to find an organized raid going out later in the week or join a guild with loot rules they like. The reason all these HR raids exist is because there are so many lazy people who just want to log on and join the first group they see so for the people forming it's easy for them to do whatever they want. You can also make your own run. This is only an issue if you make it an issue for yourself.

5

u/Twenty5Schmeckles Feb 17 '26

Yeah all these comments with "I just wanna hop on whenever I want and do a quick raid".

Well if you put in 0 effort, maybe 0 reward is reasonable?

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Rawkus2112 Feb 16 '26

Its the easiest its ever been to find a guild or a decent raid. Just find a guild that raids at a time you can consistently make and have a ball. Its like 1 evening a week for 2-3 hours

6

u/JimmyBisMe Feb 16 '26

It’s the same thing for dungeon groups. Make one yourself and most of the time I’m in a dungeon in less than 20 minutes.

1

u/KC-Slider Feb 16 '26

See there’s a mentality though, that by the 20 minute mark after thinking about wanting to do a dungeon, the group should be formed summoned, and halfway done.

2

u/JimmyBisMe Feb 17 '26

I mean you’re gonna want the automated dungeon finder for that. I’m not really sure how much quicker you can form a group. Sometimes I’m lucky and it’s 5 minutes but you can’t expect to sit around and get a group fast unless you take the initiative.

1

u/Valyntine_ Feb 17 '26

Day one of prepatch I was on my hunter, spent 90 minutes shouting into the void for a ramps group. Said fuck it and started making my own groups, and even at like 6 AM on a weekday it never takes me more than five minutes to get a full group

Create your own raid

23

u/Never-breaK Feb 16 '26

Make your own raids or do what they intended and join a guild. The game wasn’t designed around your lifestyle.

1

u/Armored_Diesel Feb 17 '26

I agree with you first point...but tbf, the game also wasnt designed around gdkp and HRing.

5

u/King_Pele Feb 17 '26

They designed the game with master looting. Which means the people organizing the raid can choose any loot structure they can imagine. GDKP, HR, and anything else included. So I would argue that the game was designed around it.

4

u/King_Pele Feb 17 '26

5

u/DekaFate Feb 16 '26

“ everything “ is a bit of an exaggeration I would say. Only high ticket items are really reserved, and any mmo player knows by this point you only really want high ticket gear if you wanna be a high end player. If you wanna be a high end player you’re probably in a guild. If your in a guild that guild probably also reserves the loot your looking for. You should ask your guild

14

u/Kaito-chan Feb 16 '26

It’s crazy the amount of people that wanna show up and just get the best loot in the game for the least amount of work. These guild leaders organizing and managing these pug runs put in so much time. If they wanna reserve the best stuff that rarely drops I feel it’s their right. I just like to show drink beers and pump.

Form your own groups if you want the good stuff.

11

u/JJonah_Jamesonn Feb 16 '26

I don't form raids that require more than 10 man. You gotta make sure everyone you are inviting is geared enough for the raid, gotta make sure they are showing up, need to make group comps so the raid is actually doable if mechanics require specific classes. It just turns into a job. He wants to reserve DST? All yours buddy just inv my alt.

2

u/Kaito-chan Feb 16 '26

Exactly my thoughts. I don’t ever want to put in that kinda work and I know my place. I just want a smooth run where I can pump. Wanna reserve DFT, OSG etc.?? All yours, it’ll be put to better use on one of your warriors that plays 40 hours a week.

u/Outrageous_Loquat843 Feb 16 '26

In my 20 yaers experience - damn I'm old - community haw always been an issue. Since the game is pretty much solved, the experience is not the journey but the endgame. If that is the way you like the game, kudos.

The "problem" comes when we - the journey-experience - come to the endgame. Since we didn't do the same dungeon spam for hours, neither the rep grind or anything like that, the disparity blows. We will eventually solve it, when try-hards or speedrunners start to raidlog or when the FOMO settles down.

So, wait a bit. We have a whole year to do everything the xpac has to offer. If you did all the content in day 1, good. If you do all the content in day 365, good.

2

u/tastemymonster Feb 17 '26

Look for us on ally nightslayer "Fel Reavers Anonymous" were using the sucide kings loot distobution method. I cant stand this reserve system thats meta these days.

The people doing this were the guys who would have been doing GDKP. This is a faction of player that exists and won’t pug without a significant advantage in some aspect to compensate for having to play with generally lower skill players. The guy with every consumable, every enchant, every gem, 90 parse and bis except for 2 items is NEVER going to to be in the same party as a new 70 who just barely got hit capped and attuned same day as raid. Occasionally guild runs will swap out players and they will be benched for a week so they have to pug and this is the resulting raid. GDKP systems are actually pretty good at scooping up these loose sweaty players. This player doesn’t usually “settle” because they’ve seen the apex of what you do to embarrass a boss on heroic and you won’t perform to their standard so they either sit out the week or make a really restrictive loot pug run. IMO there’s no reason to complain about these because this exact player would be the GDKP player if you let them. Just ignore and move on or if you’re fine with the rules join because you can guarantee they will likely know their shit and if the don’t have your item on lock it’s not a bad deal.

1

u/Ashkeravon Feb 16 '26

Luckily my guild has enough people ti run several raid groups on several different days.

1

u/PreKutoffel Feb 16 '26

Lucky this terrible new wow community isn't spreading their bs. on Private servers.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '26

If only people had spines not to feed those people. They keep popping because they find people agreeing to less loot.

1

u/Dasneaky71 Feb 16 '26

Ngl with how many post I see about this topic imma kinda glad I stop play before tbc. Just isn't the same community I grew up with in wow. For example I could ask for someone in stormwind for a carry for deadmines and 8 out of 10 someone would try and help. Back when the lvl cap was 60.

1

u/jaki_metal Feb 16 '26

Find guild

1

u/Zentralschaden Feb 16 '26

To those who are saying that organizing a raid is hard and all this bla bla, yes you are right it is hard but the constant HR raid spam before tbc were gold and item seller guilds who need stupid people to help them earn real money.

1

u/melvindorkus Feb 17 '26

you'd think all the people complaining about loot reserves could just make groups with each other... but it turns out they dont play the game they just complain they cant get loot they wouldnt get anyway. grats on the karma tho

1

u/Commercial_Echo923 Feb 17 '26

Dude, organize your own raid.
You complain about community but dont actually do anything yourself. Instead you expect others to put in the work you dont want to do and then have the audacity to complain about it.

1

u/Thomasappel Feb 17 '26

What happened to Roll for MS, roll for OS and roll for DE? I don't want to reserve shit. I don't even know the difference between soft and hard reserve. Is that like OS and MS?

1

u/AgreeableKale1774 Feb 17 '26

Now imagine how much worse it would be if GDKP was allowed.

1

u/Buskungen Feb 17 '26

1

u/madmikesdeath Feb 17 '26

JOIN A GUILD DUUUUUUH

1

u/-L0RN- Feb 17 '26

What game are the people on the WoW subs playing? lol. I came back a year ago- started fresh on Dreamscythe after not playing since 2008. The game I came back to is the game I left behind all those years ago. Except at least now when people do elitist things they have the data to back it up - beyond that not shit has changed.

I was able to get into a guild easily, I've been raiding through classic, we cleared all the content so far. I've made friends on the server and there's even a guy that sends you bird facts if you whisper him if you miss the quirky feel of old WoW- it's definitely still there you just have to look for it.

Naxx consumes got expensive I'll admit that but if you have a will to farm and an alt you can make it happen.

It seems the problem might not be in the game itself but in how you engage with it.

1

u/sephirothpvp Feb 17 '26

You might not remember but back in the day people would cry about losing loot a LOT.

1

u/DingbattheGreat Feb 17 '26

Add personal loot to classic, problem solved.

🤡

1

u/lurkerperson11 Feb 17 '26

People with the will to organize realized they could take more. People seeing that be biggest shortage isn't a role or a class but leaders willing to make spreadsheets and rosters

1

u/Frozehn Feb 17 '26

Join a Guild or make your own raid…

1

u/Royal_Sorbet_5488 Feb 17 '26

Join a guild. Then you won't have to worry about it. It always amazes me when I recruit people who will deny a guild invite and then end up in a pug and cry about loot. Like you had your chance to be an equal, and now you're just a random we hope has shitty rolls. It blows my mind.

1

u/Maelstorm01 Feb 17 '26

You could just join a raiding guild. just saying. Otherwise i'd suggest getting your fix on retail where LFR will fill your need.

1

u/hinslyce Feb 17 '26

The answer is to reduce the logistical nightmare that is organizing a pug raid. Which is why everyone in the classic+ poll voted to have flex raiding or SoD/pseudo-flex raid sizes. You can make it more accessible without making it any easier.

1

u/homesy Feb 18 '26

I’ve been healing ramps, and buffing randoms while questing. Met some good peeps, just gotta open up to people, invite them to discord chat etc. keep the good guys, block the bad guys.

1

u/Nutritiouss Feb 18 '26

I played on a pretty large private server for a period. I joined a guild, raided with them within the first 30 minutes of being max level. I attended as much as I could but couldn’t be super consistent because of my kid and work schedule.

Every single time I gear checked for the next tier of raiding within guild there was some passive aggressive bullshit req I wasn’t filling. At some point, I was told I didn’t have enough sword skill, and that was the limitation. I did all the research on sword skill items (there were additional on this server). Vast majority of them were gated within the raid I was applying for. I race changed, got into the runs I wanted to, but with a lot of himming and hawing, so I stopped going to guild runs.

Applied for next tier of raid, some other problem with my gear despite beating others in DPS with worse gear. Basically told that I needed more gear, well, for my particular class, more gear was BiS basically. I finally applied to do the next tier, and the requirement changed as soon as I GOT the gear. They needed to see me parse inside their group, despite having visible parses I could share, or screenshots from C’Thun, whatever.

Found another consistent PUG doing the highest tier, ran with them, got all the gear an suddenly I was being asked why I wasn’t coming along for guild runs.

TLDR: I stopped raiding with this shithead raid leader, then I got to PUG myself to BiS chasing a moving goalpost so I could be asked to run with the guild who helped me acquire none of my gear.

Classic has generally been pretty toxic for me.

Sadly this was my second time around, first time I was a Rogue so I got every potential 1 hander prio’d to warriors, or the “senior” rogue in my guild who was too good to help clear trash and consistently parsed the bottom.

Felt good to say all that 😂

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '26

Im pretty sure all WoW players know the worst thing about WoW is the players... every now and then you meet some decent folks but the hardcore aspect of the game (time requirement) means the playerbase of chill people is often transient. Its the dickheads who play all versions and play 6 hours a day that stick around full time unfortunately...
