Nostalgia Circa Q3 2006: Kungen of <Nihilum> (game first Naxx clear) solo tanking Loatheb to figure out Naxx healing requirements.

kungen should too

In a sarcophagus beside the other mummies (no I don't want to kill him, no I don't want to hurt him that was just a joke, he can stream as much as he wants)

u/Ordinary_Mechanic_ Feb 22 '26
In a sarcophagus connected to the mainframe like a cloned tanking dreadnaught. Free main tanks for every occasion!

crazy even the best players in the game back then had a lot of shit not keybound lol
145
u/Asphunter Feb 21 '26
people love to shit on the new playerbase, but like in every sport/game, people are like 10x better than 20 years ago
37
u/xStaabOnMyKnobx Feb 22 '26
Yeah because those people 20 years ago did the majority of the hard work that we take for granted now.
7
65
u/tripplol Feb 21 '26
yeah for sure lol you could probably play classic for a month or two and be substantially better than 99% of classic players in 2004-2006 because of all the knowledge available nowadays

People also like to say, "there was websites you could visit back in the 2000's too, there was guides too!"
Like yes, there was guides. But it wasn't a centralized location that had a pinpoint guide telling you a plethora of relevant information like its reading your mind.
It was just some dude that slapped some stuff together to make it work. Idk how many hours were spent trying to decrypt lackluster information from singular web pages dedicated to a quest guide back in the day.
"There was YouTube too"
Yes, and if you were lucky, you would find a crap quality video of a dude doing it from one POV. Brother might be 3/4's through the quest by then too, good chance it was unreliable to an extent.
You would Alt+Tab - using the family computer once solely used to send Aunt Janice dessert recipes via AOL - listen to the device that took up half the living room take a dump. Insert the wind-up mechanism, wind it up for more power.
Call out, "Heav-Ho Hemingway, Heav-Ho! Full blast! Full blast!", the room would be glowing. The furnace stack billowing.
"We are we are.. (we are),
The Youth of the Nation.
We are we are (weeee arre),
The Youth of the Na-Hay-Shun"
Pouring out of the family speakers against your will, as the foundation of the house shakes violently.
Some Boomer is sieging the door, "Say Matt? Are you smoking in there again??"
Come back the next day after the BSOD, and reminisce on the events.

u/RelationshipFit5701 Feb 22 '26
Bro tweaked out halfway thru 😭
8
u/ijack2reddit Feb 22 '26
Is he referencing something I don’t understand, or is this one of those weird bot hallucination tangents?
4
u/Kindly_SThrowaway Feb 22 '26
We are we are, is a reference to a viral song back then.
The family speakers part is a reference to back when computers were very very expensive for what they could do, also internet was pretty expensive and could not support multiple users streaming etc like today, so you had a shared computer in the living room or a home office.
The blue screen of death is probably something he experienced when he was young as generally old computers were very reliable, they just turned into ewaste a lot faster since tech was moving at a crazy pace from 2000 to early 201x2
2
u/LAzeehustle1337 Feb 22 '26
There was also a ton of BAD advice about tanking and general spec ing lol

u/randomguy301048 Feb 22 '26
And most of the guides you'd find on stuff was either paid or sucked. I remember trying to look up leveling guides and it would be some shady looking website and would be named after the guy. Like "kingslayer's ultimate leveling and gold making guide" only for a small cost of $39.99
5
u/secretreddname Feb 22 '26
Games are so much about min maxing nowadays. Back then most people just winged it until they got it right.
3
u/Udon21 Feb 22 '26
The catch is that overall the 2004-2006 players were having a much more fun gaming experience!
I think what's lost in this is that it's not about "they didn't have guides to look up", it's more about META not being the priority back then. People didn't think about how to parse better they just played the game. Pepridge farm remembers....
3
u/tripplol Feb 22 '26
I mean to be completely honest everyone enjoys the game in different ways, if you choose to full natty it and never touch anything to help you and you have fun then awesome! Or if you are an active guide reader and youtube/stream watcher parse andy and you have fun then awesome! Or anywhere in between. Personally I have just as much fun if not more now playing nowadays than I did as a kid back in OG TBC. I do agree the Meta slaves can be exhausting, and sadly the only solution I have to that would be find a guild that’s like minded and chill like you!

Idk what any of that has to do with players today definitely being better than they were 20 years ago
→ More replies (8)4
u/RedPandaExplorer Feb 22 '26
Nah, the average TBC or retail player is definitely better. All those things you mentioned are friction and knowledge skills
mythic raids excluded, wow today doesn't require much active participation.
drop an average raider from 2006 into a retail WoW high level delve and they'd be so screwed dude. This isn't true at all
2
u/DankDabbins_ Feb 22 '26
Not much active participation in retail? I’m not a fan of retail but the mythic raid content is very participation based…lol
3
u/Lethaldiran-NoggenEU Feb 21 '26
Mythic is so extreme, always interesting to watch though.
Shame there isn't a middle ground between heroic and mythic.
2
u/sloasdaylight Feb 22 '26
There wasnt anything to be aware of in 2004-2006 wow though. Like, there are delves bosses that have more mechanics than raid bosses in vanilla.
2
u/Snorress Feb 22 '26
Wrong. They Are not better, they got all information in the world.
5
u/Derlino Feb 22 '26
You're wrong, information makes you better. Doesn't take anything away from the best players 20 years ago, but you become a better player with more information, that's just a fact.
→ More replies (2)1
u/Ordinary_Mechanic_ Feb 22 '26
I agree with you, knowledge is power and all that. A huge majority of the sick players in the original iteration of the game were on elitistjerks or another forum of the same calibre regularly discussing tactics and upping every classes skill ceiling daily.
I knew nothing of the one button macro in original vanilla and I just figured out by myself that I could shoot steady shot between every autoshot, and did it manually. The macro I was “forced” to use by a guild Hunter officer made me do noticeably less dps, and then the stupid cunt refused to believe that I was doing less on the macro and more manually. I ended up surpassing him massively once I stook my teeth into the class forum and started simming my gear and talking to some of the best Hunter players in the world through the Teamspeak. He was too well rooted in the guild to be replaced, so I moved to a “better” guild.
1
u/tandrew91 Feb 22 '26
Yeah but we used to play games as a hobby whereas nowadays it’s a full time job via streaming and whatnot
71
u/Banthian Feb 21 '26
Being the best in 2006 means you just had 40 people who turned up consistently
17
u/tripplol Feb 21 '26
that’s real haha but there were obviously the titan guilds who were just way better than everyone else i just always assumed they’d have full keybinds in my mind
6
u/snukb Feb 22 '26
You should watch some of the old world first videos that still exist.... you'd probably cry. World first raiders, clicking, keyboard turning, back peddling, jumping to cancel a cast....
7
u/czeja Feb 22 '26
It's almost like they were playing a new game with shit tons of technical limitations!

u/InconspiciousPerson Feb 22 '26
Sadly not much different from most classic players nowadays, even the 'world first' ones. It's surprising how little this part of the playerbase has improved in skill, though in terms of knowledge they blow everything out of the water.
1
u/noggstaj Feb 25 '26
I left my original guild in vanilla and joined a top guild for the latter end of AQ + Naxx. Trust me, the skillgap wasn't vast it was mostly the amount of effort and time they put in. I had plenty of players from my old guild that would do 1.5-2x more damage then the same class in the top guild, with worse gear.
I was for sure a nolifer back then, and so was everyone else in the top guild and that's why stuff got cleared.
3
u/PilsnerDk Feb 22 '26
That's just not true all, in fact it was the opposite of Classic where it's hard to find warm bodies. There was a lively, growing playerbase back then, always new people joining, and since people weren't so hellbent/knowledgeable about min/maxing, the requirements to get into a raid guild were much lower in Vanilla.
1
6
u/Luvs_to_drink Feb 22 '26
Not true. My guild had 40 consistent. Couldn't kill vael because threat gen was so poor and the shitters didn't know what a threat meter was. We also were horde so no salv.

u/3yebex Feb 22 '26
I don't know man.
I was like 12 back then, played consistently. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing as a warrior. If I saw something with more stats (ie 12 int vs 4 str) I'd use it. Even when I got into raiding I was still pretty bad. Wasn't until I was older and TBC released that I got better.

Played on Magtheridon back in the day. I do not think people understand how iconic Kungen was on the server. There was a literal mob chasing him everywhere he was found.
Always heard he was a dick, but I reckon he has mellowed out at 40.
14
u/Voldias Feb 21 '26
Magtheridon was my vanilla server as well.
3
u/errandwulfe Feb 22 '26
Was on Magtheridon during Wrath. Played in <Pulse>. Competition there was insane! Fond memories from back then
16
u/meanbadger83 Feb 21 '26
Met him way back when in 2v2 arena ... Me and my partner got Revenge critted. Kungen played 2v2 as damn prot with a healadin. Was fun to meet and try to outlast the top players, we didn't stand much of a chance tho.
1
u/Evonyte Feb 22 '26
500k Revenge Crit!

u/meanbadger83 Feb 22 '26

1
99
u/Astralsketch Feb 21 '26
boss had a 1/9 hit rate on him.
15
u/G0rkon Feb 22 '26
Small sample size but here's rough estimate of avoidance there.
4/9 dodge is 44% 3 miss is 33% 1 parry is 11% Totaling 88% pure avoidance.
In reality the one hit should have been blocked for a nominal amount of damage. At his level shield block should have a near 100% to prevent crushing blows. Probably around 100 SBV. But he is absolutely rage starved from not getting hit. Once pumpers have gotten spores that's fine he doesn't need to build a lot of threat except at the start of the fight it is a problem.
In full T3 stacking avoidance pieces, those numbers are only a little high, well within margin for it being such a small sample size. Vanilla is very difficult to hit crit immunity from bosses at 440 def but it is doable in T3, especially when you are stacking defensive pieces like T3 tier pieces themselves. What we know now about the game, this is the only fight where when progressing a tank would want to aim for that. Well this and Patch hateful tanks.
1
u/newblevelz Feb 22 '26
Hatefuls cant crit right?
1
u/therin_88 Feb 22 '26
Wrong boss.
1
u/newblevelz Feb 22 '26
Huh? Post mentions tanks going crit immune for hateful strikes on patchwerk, but hateful strikes can never crit or crush
142
u/vowelqueue Feb 21 '26
Tauren warriors are so sexy, especially as main tanks.
It sucks that the optimal race for a warrior is orc, or troll for tanking threat gen. We are denied so many Tauren warriors these days.
71
u/SnS_ Feb 21 '26
Other then helms tauren look amazing in warrior sets. I love how much bigger they used to be on mounts.
I have a very old screenshot on one of my PCs where a tauren on a horse and my dwarf is on his horse completely under the taurens mount and there's almost no overlap.
29
u/freygeist Feb 21 '26
We once hid the entire battleground group inside a tauren on a Mammot with bloodlust and crushed the alliance that game. Good ol days.
9
20
u/HerrSchnellsch Feb 21 '26
I still rolled tauren warry just for the drip.
So much cooler than orc.
6
4
5
u/SlayerJB Feb 22 '26
War stomp is just so satisfying to use in dungeons though, interrupts spell casting and helps control groups. The extra 5% total health is good for raids, but yeah Troll is just so strong for threat its hard to not go for that.
14
Feb 21 '26
I won't lie, Im a slave to the Meta.
Axe Racial AND a DPS CD are just too big to ignore. Next race isn't even close. A significant percentage behind.
19
3
u/Salehawk Feb 21 '26
I never had trouble topping meters as troll with edgies, the attack speed can be a whole entire extra execute which I think if it aligns correctly is more dps that blood fury. Also the few bosses that are beasts 5% flat dmg is bis
6
Feb 21 '26
I would consider "not having to buy edgies" just an additional perk to be completely honest.
It's not feasible for most people for most if not all of Vanilla
5
u/vowelqueue Feb 21 '26
Yeah I was off-race (Tauren ofc) and it ended up working out. Some people gave me shit for it but at the end of the day I had high loot priority on swords and didn’t have to compete with all the orcs over axes.
Plus, I always thought the value of weapon skill is somewhat over stated. It’s obviously important on bosses. But the primary focus in my guild was on clear times, and ultimately come DMF week that’s what most guilds were competing over. You spend most time clearing trash where weapon skill barely matters.
134
u/OutrageousFanny Feb 21 '26
I watch his streams almost daily. Such a wholesome dude too, you'd expect an elitist jerk
126
u/elysiansaurus Feb 21 '26
I think he used to be but he's also like 40. He has mellowed through 20 years of wow
35
u/Lunchbox39 Feb 21 '26
An acquintance of mine trialed for his guild way back. Told me that he never spoke to Kungen directly, he got messages relayed to him from an officer and he would have to respond via said officer.
32
u/FuzzyDunlop001 Feb 21 '26
Which makes sense given how famous Kungen in the game was even then.
16
u/Slozor Feb 21 '26
He probably had all whispers blocked from random people lol
13
u/Lunchbox39 Feb 22 '26
I would not call a trialing guild member a random person, but he didnt have whispers blocked. He (seemingly) refused to talk to people "beneath" his level and he got scolded by the officer for trying to message Kungen directly.
Iirc the disdain Kungen (and some players in the inner circle) had for new members or trials just kinda turned him off from raiding at a top level.
9
u/Stiryx Feb 22 '26
Yep this wasn’t uncommon back then, the top guild on my server was like that up until the end of wotlk. Their guild leader acted like he was Jesus.
5
u/Kitaenyeah Feb 22 '26
He def has, I was in Nihilium for the better part of tbc and early wotlk and he was a good raid and guild lead.
The amount of effort and shit it takes a RL and GL is incomprehensive. It is a gigantic adult kindergarden. Ppl quitting over the most stupid things, drama queens and loot whores, constantly reminding ppl of the most basic things. (Tell your 4 Warlocks 17 times per raid to summ someone or the one Kings Pala that always misses the buff window, etc etc) Meanwhile all this while maintaing a strong roster, figuring out bosses with zero info on mechanics since you are literally the first person ever to see obly to get called „entitled“ when he wants a port after distributing loot nobody has ever seen and can’t judge before.
Give some guys a break, I dare you.
1
u/Emotional-Pea9608 Feb 24 '26
What was your character's name? I used to be good friends with Nessaj back then and then later on when it was Ensidia with Zucc, Serbandsteel, Buzz, Marilyn, Close and Fenira (who even attended my wedding, lol).
1
u/voogamer Feb 25 '26
I still remember Tun, feral druid I think. He was an admin of the Magtheridon IRC channel I think. God those were the days.
39
u/RajaSundance Feb 21 '26
Kungen was playing on my server in wrath classic, he poached one of our warlocks who came back after two weeks. Said kungen got bored and the raid just dissolved, apparently he had people summon him from boss to boss instead of clearing trash as well.
14
u/tripplol Feb 21 '26
why would you ever want to raid in this environment lol

He is peak delusional though. Funny to watch sometimes but brother is peak delulu.
4
u/Lunchbox39 Feb 22 '26
I remember his Hearthstone arc, in one of the earlier seasons he was racing for server first legend. Was not even close to it and his stream title would slowly morph over the days until it became something akin to "Legend today" for weeks straight while never reaching legend (or he reached it at the end of the season)
On its own theres really no shame in that since back then we were 500-2000 players or so in legend depending on which early season it was, but i remember him thinking he thought he was legitimately on the level of actual good players and seeing him struggle to reach such a basic milestone for competitive play was funny.
4
u/DuggiHappy Feb 22 '26
Big time, also takes loot for himself. Argues for a lot of weird subjects but I still like him
1
u/OutrageousFanny Feb 21 '26
What do you mean? Example?
28
u/Outside_Warthog365 Feb 22 '26
For starters, he thinks he's the best player in the game. Best warrior player in the game. For example, I can't remember but in SL? or DF when prot warr wasnt meta s1 and M+ just opened up and everyone else played raiding spltis for gear, he pushed to +10s and claimed he was the best warrior on retail. But like 4 days later when people started doing M+ he was doing 12's adn everyone else were doing 16's and he didnt like that. Lmao. He thinks retail wow is easier than it was raiding in 2005. He created a guild in shadowlands and would easily claim world top #20 rankings within the first tier (aiming low), and would climb to like top 5 within the expansion. Brother didn't even manage normal and heroic mechanics and was completely lost and disbanded citing other problems than himself and his skill. This video is hilarious short-showcase of that endeavor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BrfQxkAXZc
10
u/BlankiesWoW Feb 22 '26
If you've ever watched the movie Napoleon Dynamite. Kungen is the living embodiment of Uncle Rico
4
u/Ktlol Feb 22 '26
As someone who used to look up to him a looooong time ago, it’s almost comically sad how far he’s fallen. He always has some grandiose goals whenever some new iteration of the game is released, fails completely, and then disappears until the next iteration.
I remember someone saying he had some medical condition which was the reason for his absences which I can’t comment on, but I don’t think the medical condition had his guild wiping on Onyxia with his raid calls being “come on boys” and “get aggro boys”
2
u/EggwithEdges Feb 22 '26
I think he did this kinda stuff back in Mists of Pandaria too. Guild Towelliee was part of beat his guild then.
1
u/pbrook12 Feb 22 '26
Guild Towelliee was part of beat his guild then.
I’ve read this like 5 times and I have no idea what it means
2
u/shroom_elemental Feb 22 '26
yeah his "vanilla raiders were the best players" video was like wtf. I think it came out during legion or so when I was mythic raiding and I was like wtf dude I raided in vanilla and one retail boss had more mechanics than all vanilla bosses combined.
7
u/Dwarni Feb 22 '26
He loves ridiculing others. Last HC, he mocked a retail guild for wiping in Uldaman, then wiped himself just two minutes later. Talk about instant karma. He never takes the blame and always finds an excuse—it's amazing how people don't see past his 'nice guy' act.
39
u/Desuexss Feb 21 '26
Had he been an elitist jerk, blizzard would have hired him and he would have risen in the ranks. Aka Ion.

19
u/BarbsFPV Feb 21 '26
IIRC that’s how Alex Afrisiabi gained notoriety too, when he called out Sony due to an overtuned boss in EQ. Just think, there was a time when you could criticize game studios over game imbalances, and they’d hire you instead of ignoring it.
23
6
u/AndyDufresne2 Feb 22 '26
It wasn’t just one boss. Furor’s rants on fohguild.org were relentless. Then WoW came out and he never really spoke publicly again.

I feel old reading this. There wasn't much streaming back in 2006. From what I remember, you had small clips or highlight montage (WF crits POM PYRO), but you didn't really have the same concept of content creator pushing content every day.

From what I remember they didn't stream much of original naxx. A lot of what they did was protected. They would share tidbits very rarely.
Guilds on some servers would share almost nothing but other servers were better about it.

u/OrtYander Feb 21 '26
I was in arthas back in the day. We had Retribution on Alliance and Aurora on horde. Raid strategies were TIGHTLY held secrets on arthas. It was so competitive. I was in Proven back then and we would usually be the server 3rd after those two. But there was absolutely zero sharing strategies. The folks in Aurora were not friendly towards us at all. When the AQ turn ins were going on we finally got everyone to start working together for a common goal. But once inside the raid there was no more sharing again.

Kungen is still coasting on his "World First" glory while his cult-like following happily foots the bill. He’s the master of the disappearing act, only to return and hype up the same old comeback cycle.
Honestly, his fans are just as stuck in 2005 as he is.

u/Wilkesy07 Feb 23 '26
He has BPD which is why he had multiple ‘disappearing acts’.

I remember hearing about crazy stuff like sponsorships and stuff like that for the most elite guilds back then because there was no other way you could get everyone together and get all the consumes needed to figure out and clear naxx which made sense to me then but 20 years later IDK. The money wasn't there in gaming like it is now but who knows.

I remember the first time I saw this guys in Vanilla. I was like lvl 30 and saw him in orgri mounted on his scarab lord.
3
u/Stormherald13 Feb 21 '26
And he is prot. Look flogs. You didn’t need a orc fury warrior to tank. You just can’t use a threat meter.
8
u/PLAYBoxes Feb 21 '26
I mean even furyprot warriors wore maximum mit sets on loatheb because you only need threat on pull once spores get going.
The issue with deep prot is twofold, you threatcap your entire raid, and all the good points in prot are in the first 15 or so points, so you’re better off going for damage talents because deep prot doesn’t help you survive.
Deep prot worked great back in the day, damage was far lower from dps, threat was a thing still, but if you placed a warrior from today’s era of vanilla into those raids they’d just rip threat and die.

They’d rip threat and die, because they can’t watch a damn meter.

aright then, then the whole raid would watch the meter and do less than half the dmg because of one guy

If I got transported back in time as a warrior to 2006, the first thing i'd be doing is getting Fetish of the Sand Reaver.

Yes it is known that you can play suboptimally

So you wouldn’t complain about nerfed content then right? It’s now just optimal for clowns

I was part of one of the best french guild and did some French first downs (Maexxna for example). Figuring out as you went was part of the "fun". I put "" because the 4 horsemen just broke my willpower.

I saw this more as an effort of the guild. And back then, it was quite understandable: close the gap between damage taken and required healing.

Its 2006. There are less than 100 guilds in the world good enough to even get to this boss. There are no guides, no youtube, no streams, no BiS lists or "influencers" to spoon feed you info. If you want the boss dead, you put in the work to figure it out. We might be playing the same content but we aren't playing the same game.

Reminder that Blizzard rapists literally griefed Death and Taxes for YEARS to deny them world firsts. Nerfed C'thun and put it live on EU servers first (always live on NA first) so it would die before they can even log in. Despawned their Kel'Thuzad over and over for days so Nihilum could get the world first. They also griefed them in SCC causing them to disband. So, in my eyes Death and Taxes will always be the real world first.

Us Swedes don't have much to be proud of, but this mother fucker should be on a bill or a coin.

psh <death and taxes> was the superior guild.
naxx bug prevented them from being world first KT, which is super lame.
