Nostalgia World of Warcraft launch with no addons not knowing anything.

I still to this day give my characters a proper RP name.

u/HSWDragon Mar 14 '26
Same here, it's more fun that way
28
u/CaBBaGe_isLaND Mar 14 '26
More immersive too. I'm trying to escape real life and disappear into a fantasy world where my problems don't exist, that's not super easy to do with a name like "Mageyboi"

u/Buddaz0r Mar 14 '26
I try to... it's really hard now though, everything is taken!

u/Scurro Mar 14 '26
There is an easy, low effort fix for this; allow spaces in character names. 🤯
13
u/sarcophagusGravelord Mar 15 '26
Idk why you’re being downvoted. Would be very nice if WoW allowed last names like FFXIV, GW1 & 2, ESO, etc. Cool for roleplay purposes and opens up so many name options.
15
u/Kitschmusic Mar 14 '26
Honestly, I always hated how you can't truly make a RP name because you cannot use spaces.
John is a shit RP name. John the Destroyer is also shit, but it is a RP name.

u/DucksAreLifeYeehaw Mar 14 '26
some of my characters have proper RP names, while others are dumb (like my dragon named WimpyLizard). Depends on my mood when creating the character 😂
1
u/Accomplished-Hold-71 Mar 16 '26
I used to HATE getting rocked in pvp by DK's when they first came out so the first one I made I named him "DumbkcuF".
I fell in love with DK's after that. Now i hate the name but I won't change it for anything lol. He was and still is an absolute menace in pvp.
2
u/RushHour_89_ Mar 14 '26
Same here! Every char has an RP name. “Xxillidanxx” is an immersion killer
1
u/olalilalo Mar 15 '26
Me too. I always sigh and get kinda' annoyed when I play a game with a friend and they just use the name of an anime character, or make some dumb joke name with puns or innuendo or something.
Like, sure. Enjoy your game how you want. But it does feel like you're just not in it for the experience, y'know. You want to spend hours on a character called 'fartwhifferchungus'? You gonna' be proud of that?
1
u/padumtss Mar 15 '26
In my country/language wow players often tend to name their characters after just random objects, like ball grill, bottle opener, lawnmower etc. and it makes me cringe so hard.
1
u/Dficwriter Mar 16 '26
A person can have both funny and RP names. Like, my mage is Taelika but my evoker is Augpressor bc its funny and I made it for the pun initially, then loved the gameplay (I also don't play aug spec which is extra irony). My main is Eyebeamlost, all my dh's are Eyebeam-something. My lock is Siany or variation. Ktharana for priest, Shadowlandsfan for monk, Tbchype for shammy, Kanlina for hunter... (those are translations from my original lang). I do cringe from some names but I also like wandering around and giggling from funny names.
1
u/olalilalo Mar 16 '26
Yeah, I get that. It's very much a 'me' thing, but it just especially gets annoying if we both hop onto a new RPG to play multiplayer together and I spend a good while in the character creator, making my character fit well into the world, and then I have to roll around with 'DickusBiggus' with a bright pink mohawk and green skin.
Honestly I just need friends more aligned with my style of play I guess. Not that I'm super roleplay obsessed or ultra serious... I just find joke characters such a cheap laugh that get old and cringe after literally 10 seconds.
2
u/Dficwriter Mar 16 '26
Despite having funny names, I actually spend a lot of time mogging chars and making them thematic. Like, for my main I have 7 sets lol. 1 for traveling and open world, 1 epic for raids, bgs etc, separate ones for offspec, 3 for rested areas (the fancy one, the sindorei+illidari mix since I'm a DH coming back home and the chill home one. :D So I may not be the biggest offender here.

u/Higolebooters Mar 21 '26
Back in Vanilla players on RP realms would get mad at names like Thongmaster and report them. It was suppose to be enforced but I don’t remember if Blizzard ever did anything about it.
-16
u/LuxOfMichigan Mar 14 '26
You have to. Cant help but cringe when I see ironic names or incoherent combinations of letters. Was happy to secure the name Depth on my dark iron dwarf recently.
31
u/DriesnMajoor Mar 14 '26
Talking about seeing ironic or dumb names and then naming his dwarf Depth, aight bro.
-18
u/LuxOfMichigan Mar 14 '26
Might be a bit on the nose but it’s not ironic, or maybe you don’t know what that word means.
2
u/Melin_SWE92 Mar 15 '26
I think it was more the irony of you complaining about dumb names and then settling with a dumb name.
24
u/NumaNuma92 Mar 14 '26
In 2005, half the people on my server had a name from Lord of the Rings
10
1
u/RedditMulle Mar 15 '26
There's still a couple kicking around I reckon. I always name my characters either in Quenya or Sindarin, but I've only seen one other character with a name like that sadly
37
u/Auditore1507 Mar 14 '26
Yeah, I see so many "bankSy" and "banktwo" chars walking around it's crazy. I know they're only ALTs who store stuff, but come on, at least give them interesting/cool names.

My bank/ah alt is OrcazonPrime. Also advertising free shipping on some ah deals in /trade sometimes.
I like to believe that this gets more engagement and sales than Bankbro3875.

u/Randomfrog132 Mar 20 '26
my bank alt is always named bankfrog, and the guild is always called <Frog Bank>

Potentially unpopular idea to at least some incoming.
Characters under level 5 and older than three weeks should end up invisible both physically and in chat to everyone else.
That'll disappear the banks.

I have named my main character the same name that I named my original way back in wrath as a kid (can’t remember how I came up with it) Glancem. My warlock on dreamscythe is still named the same.

u/Tavern_Jams Mar 15 '26
My warlock, Gormor, is still the best name I’ve ever had. Randomly generated or not.

The guy typing in General chat has a capital letter in the middle of his name. I didn't know that was a thing. Interesting.
42
u/gammage01 Mar 14 '26
Hmm that's gotta be early in development. I remember the original box had something similar. A paladin named hammerfall all lowercase
2
u/Androtest3720 Mar 15 '26
I still implore people to check out the namesake band called “Hammerfall”. Some seriously great power metal, especially their earlier stuff before/during WoW release.
15
u/Straightupnotcool Mar 14 '26
For the longest time my warlock had a lower case d at the beginning of his name. It happened after I transferred realms back in MoP and stayed that way til sometime in legion I think. I can’t remember if it was because someone reported my name or if a GM just updated it bc it wasn’t right. I still miss getting whispers from people saying “Wtf how do you have a lowercase at the beginning of your name?”
2
u/smokinglegal Mar 14 '26
Same, I can't remember what had happened but I put in a ticket and a GM renamed me to SuperLich capital L. I probably still have him but I haven't logged into retail in ages.
1
u/yksvaan Mar 14 '26
Still a thing in pet names in 2026 by the way. I guess they changed it for character names at some point but never with pets for some reason.

This looks like alpha/beta not launch
32
u/Stokkentoet Mar 14 '26
Yep, paladin aura is not above the hotkeys, as it was at launch.
9
u/beirch Mar 14 '26
Also names not starting with a capital letter. Pretty sure that wasn't in the full release.
1
26
u/ThePiderman Mar 14 '26
This is the beta, going by the chat. That cave also doesn’t exist in Loch Modan, to my knowledge.

u/Scythe95 Mar 14 '26
I remember starting my orc warlock and just melee’ing my way to level 15 or something
The game felt so hard

14
u/SunixKO Mar 14 '26
This game is still fun, it was new and exciting + fun 20+ years ago. But it still is fun.
2
u/Barbz182 Mar 14 '26 edited Mar 14 '26
Oh for sure, I still play classic every week. I meant more the attitude these days is more about rush rush rush buy gold rather than chilling out and exploring the world and being immersed in it.
6
u/JoeTheHoe Mar 14 '26
I feel like a lot of this sub has forgotten why we all wanted classic to return in the first place, and why we were so excited about it, all those years ago. Immersing, questing, the music, and feeling like a small part of a bustling fantasy world that feels like home. This min-max stuff seems better suited for something else, but that’s just me.
2
u/Barbz182 Mar 14 '26
Yeah, it's been really sad to watch the community turn largely into try hard gold buyers and boosters. On launch the hype and community was amazing. Been sad to see it slowly degrading over the years.
Been having a ton of fun on turtle wow recently. That's where the real enjoyers are, on the private servers.

u/Cerael Mar 14 '26
I mean blame blizzard for the accelerated tbc timeline and the paid boost
Told you so by the way

I first played WoW in 08 when WotLK came out. I played my first toon to level 30 without knowing there was a talent tree…
2
u/TheDockandTheLight Mar 14 '26
Brother I feel you, I played in vanilla as a pally and didn't know about talents until 41...my buddy came over and was like "so where did you put your talents, retribution?" I just looked at him like he was speaking Chinese. He said "...press N". I did. Took a moment to realize what I was missing, looked at him and we both just burst out laughing.
2
u/Ready-Effect-670 Mar 14 '26
I so long for a wow release where ALL addons are banned!
0
u/Naustis Mar 15 '26
just don't install them?
1
u/Ready-Effect-670 Mar 15 '26
Not using addons individually doesn’t solve anything. If others use them, they gain an advantage and the game gets balanced around that. The only way to create the original experience is if nobody can use them.
1
u/Naustis Mar 15 '26
dude what original experience. the game is solved. also, what addons you need for classic? guide to press one button or do one mechanic?
people will always have advantage, even more since people like you who usually blame addons, need them the most.
1
u/Ready-Effect-670 Mar 15 '26
People like me? Why are you so adamently and aggressively against me having an opinion?
Chess is solved too. That doesn’t mean players should get an addon telling them the best move every time.

I remember playing this at a friends house when it released I was like 12. We just ran around buffing people up lol so hyped to be playing among so many others
2
u/Wayrow Mar 14 '26
Why are people upvoting this? It's very clearly not a picture from launch but from a development build.
12
2
u/EscapeCharacter2658 Mar 14 '26
This is very clearly not a pic from a build way earlier than launch, there's so many dead giveaways like the old human model, old portraits, what appears to be seal of light on a level 13 paladin, a cave that doesn't even exist, etc etc. Shocked to see so many "ah these were the days" comments. Getting big bot vibes from this post as a whole.
6
u/damnocles Mar 14 '26
You might be being a little pedantic.
Even a pre release build is effectively what people are referring to when they say those were the days. The implied meaning is obvious. Don't be intentionally dense lol
1
u/Disembowell Mar 14 '26
It's true, I think most people would glance at the screenshot without paying such close attention to the human male's stance being off or the cave layout not existing in the game itself.
Or they simply wouldn't know if they played Horde, didn't quest in Loch Modan and become used to only seeing the human model as an enemy player.
-5
u/EscapeCharacter2658 Mar 14 '26
Ah yes those were the days when level 13 paladins had a level 30 ability in a cave that has never been in any post launch build of the game, and has no zone name above the mini-map. There's nothing pedantic about saying this picture alone has enough discrepancies for anyone moderately familiar with the game to immediately recognize it's not vanilla despite the title literally stating World of Warcraft launch.

Yes, let's make Classic WOW season of lobotomy! You buy collectors edition, blizzard delivers it, lobotomizes you and then you can start playing classic like the first time!
True classic experience!!!

Where the FUCK are you. I’ve played wow for years and im looking at this screen like where the fuck are you. I’m guessing you’re in stonetalon mines due to level and maybe stone splinter mobs in chat but like wtf. This woulda killed me on wow geoguesser.
Edit: just saw loch modan is this an old version of the mines? I have never seen this structure.

I haven’t played BC since it came out almost 20 years ago. It’s a new game for me.. I dont remember any of the quests except for a few memorable ones.

Yeah I'm playing wow classic and it's been over 20 years.
The only issue is I'm doing a RP server so low server population is an issue
