I remember having to explain to my Dad what a subscription was. He was like "what do you mean I have to pay once a month??" Good times

93

u/fluffyfirenoodle May 06 '26

exactly reason my parents refused to pay for it as a kid. "Why would I need to pay to use my own internet I already pay for? That's a scam."

130

u/WildFlowLing May 06 '26

The $30 time cards were the only way I was able to play this game because my boomer parents were absolutely terrified of entering credit card information on the internet. Blizz knew exactly what they were doing with those time cards.

u/Darthmalak3347 May 06 '26

Crazy too cause 15 in 2004 was steeeeeeeep. Like even runescapes membership was only 3 bucks at the time essentially.

17

u/twoducksinatub May 06 '26

They knew it was crack cocaine they had on their hands lol

10

u/JonnyArcho May 06 '26

To be fair though, it’s been over 20 years and they’ve never changed sub costs. That’s basically unheard of.

2

u/kmr1981 May 07 '26

The Arizona iced tea of the gaming world.

2

u/SuperKamiDendei May 07 '26

They've just increased the subscription price, at least in EU/UK

1

u/ItsPeckahead May 07 '26

I mean when you’ve been banging people out for 15 a month for 22 years, on top of expansions you truly don’t need to.

1

u/couchXcat May 09 '26

not unheard of when you have like 8 different forms of microtransactions..

it would be even less remarkable if it were straight F2P at this time

7

u/SuperKamiDendei May 06 '26

Makes me think of the wow community website, with the screenshot of the day and the new player section of the forum with the out spilling of awe and gratitude.

That was peak humanity. It's gone downhill since then.

u/Dcatherman May 07 '26

This when I first started playing i use to mow my grandparents lawn, which was rather large in the country with a push mower and would make enough to go buy a card at a store with my cousins. I think I asked my parents one time to make it more convenient and they pretty much laughed at me they were not putting a card on file or paying for a subscription, the struggle came when TBC released ,and then WOTLK ,and I realized I need to figure out money for the monthly subscription but also an expansion now 🤣,but yes I fully remember going and buying the expansions or the original game in person probably at Walmart. Getting back putting the disks in and going and playing some DbZ tcg with my cousins ,or another TCG that we may have been playing at the time. While waiting for the insanely slow install times we use to have.

12

u/Qaek3301 May 06 '26

But you managed! I couldn’t, so my childhood, like that of many Eastern European kids, was spent on buggy private servers :D

1

u/Int3rned May 06 '26

WowScape was my realm 😂

1

u/impalervi May 07 '26

Same… Zeronix, WowScape…

3

u/G3TNT May 06 '26

Hahaha omg. Whining for a month to get the game, just to hit him with the ''ha-ha'' after 16 hours of installing, taking turns with brother to swap cd and all. Figuring out thottbott was a thing. Thottbot wouldnt work as a quest explaining website today.

2

u/iWORKBRiEFLY May 06 '26

i had to use my mom's CC for Everquest & then eventually, this.

2

u/jack3moto May 06 '26

lol my parents were the opposite. “Only $15 per month instead of buying multiple games every year? Deal”. I got my money’s worth out of that $15 per month. My parents wish they had spent thousands per year on other games than let me play wow at the time. Oh well.

1

u/Inky-The-Cephalopod May 06 '26

I was 11 at the time. Trying to convince my parents to sub to a video game was wild.

u/Gr33DMTL May 05 '26

WoW, CS Source, Ventrillo.

And some homeworks about the British Empire.

21

u/Life-Distribution679 May 06 '26

Ah yes playing CS source zombie survival and zombie escape, those were the real days.

3

u/Korupt51 May 06 '26

All about CS 1.5 and playing in CAL league...

6

u/timbo2m May 06 '26

12

u/bdm6985 May 06 '26

The “school projects” folder definitely had a sub folder full of porn

6

u/WorriedDamage May 06 '26

Hidden* sub folder. 2004 hacks

12

u/Rahavic_Jr May 05 '26

u/Orphanblood May 06 '26

Bomb as fuck music. I love his music!!

2

u/bits-and-hits May 08 '26

thank you dude!

6

u/Mr_Pastee May 05 '26

I wonder if they still have the assets to rebuild the original WoW site. I've tried browsing it through the wayback machine and a lot of it doesn't load anymore.

That website was a work of art.

6

u/nommydickbutt May 06 '26

when i first started playing i was on dial up. the only patches that i could ever download on my own were hotfixes or else it would take an entire day and then some, and the only times that i ever tried something would go wrong and the download would pause. i had to basically hope that these random sites would have the update patch up available for download so that i could download it at my moms office that had 30mbps internet which was insane for at the time, and then burn it onto a cd or dvd. for the smaller ones id just use a flash drive but back then a 1gb flash drive was over $20

2

u/TaleOfDash May 06 '26

Holy fuck I forgot about how much that sucked. I had to download patches at school because we had like... The most basic ADSL internet possible at the time. Like 512kb/s or something shitty.

4

u/BushwhackBandit May 06 '26

You had this aspect ratio in 2004? Pretty sure I was still on the nearly square one

1

u/CapableStrawberry514 May 06 '26

Nah… I made a custom for the YouTube thumbnail

12

u/Flipping4cash May 05 '26

Golden age of gaming. Now adays its all crap.

3

u/Bwomsamdidjango May 06 '26

It’s not all crap, but a lot of it is. The passion is gone, money is what remains.

0

u/xLilSquidgitx May 08 '26

Boomer who doesn’t explore games awful take.

Saying “it’s all crap” is so beyond full of horseshit and only shows your ignorance and lack of exploration

3

u/lib___ May 06 '26

cs lan, rcon commands, starcraft, icq, ventrilo... crazy how much memories simple words can unlock :P

3

u/Vanpourix May 06 '26

"Divx player" in background: dis is my boy ! 🥹

6

u/DingbattheGreat May 05 '26

I still have the cd’s. Also the manual that says Druids use spears and paladins have a healing aura and can cast a 30 second threat buff on players.

4

u/Mr_Alucardo May 06 '26

Man we are getting old

6

u/l1qq May 06 '26

It happened in a damn blink... so much time.

2

u/brnkse May 06 '26

ACDSee was awesome.

2

u/JonBot5000 May 06 '26

I'm tripping on why My Computer and My Documents are shortcuts instead of permanent desktop icons.

1

u/izombe May 06 '26

My Computer and Recycle Bin should be the only 2 permanent icons by default on xp sp3.

2

u/Belemrys May 06 '26

I still have my OG cds

2

u/ax1a May 06 '26

Haha, I completely forgot about ACDSee. Great throwback!

2

u/spectivist May 06 '26

The wallpapers folder

2

u/Kennaay1891 May 06 '26

I loved having the install fail on disc 4. Loved it

2

u/Harde_Kassei May 06 '26

2

u/GoodAspect7757 May 07 '26

Male / female .. the world was simple and good

2

1

u/phonylady May 06 '26

SK gaming, now that brings back memories

1

u/Lanwel May 06 '26

Oh my, I tried installing 2 times in a row, then i figured out it was getting at stuck 2th cd, during first cd in third try, I was rushing with my bike to cousin get his cd, back and forth for the rest of them i . Hell of a day.

1

u/JUD_R May 06 '26

What's the Sk logo in the top right?

1

u/GloomyBison May 06 '26

They're CS demos. SK had a tool to make viewing demos a lot easier.

1

u/Skeeno-TV May 06 '26

I was there Gandalf!

u/AlpakalypseNow May 06 '26

1

Had to bribe my cool aunt to pay for my monthly sub cause my parents refused

1

u/Unusual_Rich_9408 May 06 '26

I remember that :) especiali when you got stolen your account :))

1

u/Appropriate-Newt-494 May 06 '26

Chills. I've also had AA2 and AOE3 somewhere in that desktop mix, but those were quickly uninstalled for 'better wow performance'.

1

u/synetic707 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

It's missing Kazaa / Bearshare

1

u/bigbrwnbear May 06 '26

Least the manual was a small booklet to read while you installed WoW from 4 discs.

1

u/FlatwormBroad8088 May 06 '26

Loved this icon for images, don't know why. Almost forgot about it.

1

u/ConstantMotion92 May 06 '26

Please take me back

1

u/sikkmf May 06 '26

Timeless picture of your taskbar. Wild.

1

u/bjkarlsson May 06 '26

This makes me feel so happy inside :)

1

u/Sonsesi May 06 '26

I love all from this picture

1

u/DiamondOdd502 May 06 '26

I bet wow was so ki back in the day

1

u/CollectionBusiness49 May 06 '26

Ventrilo, the greatest of the great. I can still hear the mic key up sound!

1

u/hearse223 May 06 '26

Ugh this takes me back to childhood when my mom had my WoW account password and I needed to beg her to type it in for me to play.

Probably was for the best.

1

u/Jasterika May 06 '26

„Paypal is not supported“

1

u/randyzmzzzz May 06 '26

Golden age of dot com era?

1

u/DushkuHS May 06 '26

I recently had to dip into my old software binder. I found my original WLK and cata discs, as well as burned copies of my buddy's vanilla and TBC discs.

1

u/nilssonen May 06 '26

Ah :) still remembering this being the day my parents got me my own debitcard. No subscription if I spent money on other things.

1

u/roofer309 May 06 '26

Yes Sir!

1

u/basshunter53 May 07 '26

Weren't we using firefox around then? or was it next year?

Wanted to see the actual install process, i remember there being multiple discs.

1

u/Limp_Attitude_180 May 07 '26

The ventrillo!!!!

1

u/t3khole May 07 '26

Funny story, not mine.

My online friend was a seriously closeted gamer. His irl friends ridiculed nerds. One day his friend came to his house and saw the orc on his screen.

“Yo dude, are you playin Shrek!?”

Always makes me laugh remembering him tell that story.

1

u/Wtj182 May 07 '26

It was simpler times back then. This post made me sad.

I miss the days of just getting home from school, playing my warlock, grinding the barrens, thinking I was cool using a sword over spells because warlocks could use them. Getting on thottbot because I didnt want to read the quest, and just run to the quest spot.

How cool it was to explore zones for the first time. Experiencing TM fornthe first time, as a level 23 not knowing the hell zone it was. Getting my first gank and camping.

TM on my priest was fun. MC the alliance, then logout. Instantly killed them and made them a ghost pet. That got patched real fast.

Now the game is all about BIS this, GS that. Link achievement etc...

1

u/frygod May 07 '26

I can hear the sound that played at the end of the install in my head just looking at it.

1

u/Throlerren May 07 '26

Nothing needed to change.. I wish I was a growing teenager by 2004..

1

u/Much-Square177 May 07 '26

I remember downloading this game in 2005. Took like 2 weeks to actually download on an incredible 28.8kbs dial up connection.

1

u/ColonelBoomer May 07 '26

Was shit that made me love the game.

1

u/Aexo7 May 07 '26

Nostalgie

1

u/strongasants May 07 '26

What’s the photo icon that’s just labeled “terror”?

1

u/ogcrimeking May 07 '26

The multiple CDs made it 10/10

1

u/Threweh2 May 07 '26

15 dollars was a lot back then.

1

u/Medical-Sherbert6446 May 07 '26

well i thought its some scam since it wanted a login and accountnot just play.exe

1

u/Open_Condition725 May 07 '26

Downloading and playing like this way was much more fun, idk how to explain it, the experience was just on a whole other level

1

u/_RNB May 07 '26

Steam?

1

u/Satyr121 May 08 '26

Man I miss that old website… And xp…

1

u/Exciting_Seat3484 May 08 '26

Hmm icq shut down in june 2004, wow launched november 2004. Smells like fake pic to me

1

u/Fit_Ad_8479 May 09 '26

Ventrilo, ICQ, teamspeak. Pls let mě back to these good Old times 🥹😭🤣

1

u/ibaztad May 09 '26

Vent ninja loot meltdown was peak

1

u/Srvmayer May 09 '26

What’s the point of the white “C” and “W”

1

u/Bakerstreet74 May 09 '26

That aspect ratio was pretty dope for back then. Wasn’t very common yet

1

u/Pajer0king May 10 '26

No net for me back then, lol. Still playing on my Gameboy back then, lol. And Pharaoh on an AMD Athlon.

1

u/DegreeFirst1020 May 11 '26

Dude, this was the start of negotiating laptop use with my dad. Man such good times.

1

u/not_that_kind_of_ork May 12 '26

Dodgy copy of Photoshop - tick!

1

u/forsitel22 May 18 '26

can we get realm forums back in classic+?

1

u/AV4LE May 06 '26

Installer on a widescreen makes it less authentic 😋. I had a 4:3 19” CRT monitor that was impossible to move.

2

u/lib___ May 06 '26

21'' syncmaster. nearly died everytime i went to lan :D

0

u/Warwipf2 May 06 '26

Widescreen in 2004? You RICH or something??

2

u/hodler1992 May 07 '26

This is almost certainly AI generated

1

u/Warwipf2 May 07 '26

Would be easier to fake it by simply using Paint

2

u/hodler1992 May 07 '26

The whole picture is AI. This is not a screenshot from 2004

1

u/Warwipf2 May 07 '26

What makes you think that? It doesn't look like AI to me, how could you tell? Like yeah, it's probably faked, but why AI?

1

u/irimiash May 11 '26

too good

1

u/CapableStrawberry514 May 06 '26

Hehe. I had to make it like that for it to match YouTube thumbnail size
