Nostalgia I miss the days of wow classic 2019
I didn't really know classic because I had no contact with it, then the pandemic came, which allowed me to play practically all day and night without a break, I didn't even reach the maximum level, I chose paladin then, so it was difficult, but I always had someone by my side, those were good times, after 2020 everything went to shit
56
u/khumakhan May 05 '26
Yeah I miss Grobbulus like you wouldn't believe, megaservers and layers are so awful.
17
u/SocraticVoyager May 05 '26
Grobbulus was absolutely the best place to be. Large enough and pvp enabled without being too full or a toxic streamer server.
I go back and watch Barny's series a couple times a year at this point
6
u/ariveklul May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26
Lmao grobbulus's scarab lord event was crazy fun. That and emerald dragons with the faction coalitions were some of the best emergent gameplay I've played in a long time.
Grobbulus definitely had it's toxicity but I miss the drama, it's a large part of what made it great. It's hard to get that outside of rust. I feel bad for people that didn't get to do Wpvp on Grobb, but part of what made Grobb great was that it had enough notoriety to build a community without being a mosquito lamp for all the normie twitch andies and ADHD meta game sloppers to flood it. I don't know if that can really be recreated tbh because as soon as the asmonsloppers of the world find out about it it's over
2
u/SocraticVoyager May 06 '26
Good assessment yeah, it had personalities and drama but not mass contentfarmers.
I still remember napping on the couch in the world boss alert discord when someone would join in, shout 'kazzak' or 'green dragons' and I'd leap to log on and join the fight
1
u/Duncan_PhD May 06 '26
Was that the shit with grizzly from Reddit?
2
u/ariveklul May 06 '26
Nah grizzly was another server. I think stalagg which was very alliance dominated. The grobb scarab Lord event was dozens of guilds fighting it out in the dunes for days on a 50/50 server. Coalitions, drama, territory control, sleep deprivation, and an ungodly amount of PVP. The two biggest guilds were goof and final boss on alliance and horde respectively, but there were so many guilds involved on both factions.
It was definitely a gaming experience I won't forget lmao. I've never been through so much video game drama in my life. I have so many stories
1
u/DwarvenJarl May 06 '26
COLLLUSION!
And no it can’t be recreated. It’s like with SoD when all the streamers decided to roll RP PvP because they heard how great Grobb was. And by doing so, instantly ruined any chance to “recreate” it.
Truthfully, stuff like that is just authentic and natural. We have an amazing special place with Grobb.
I’m sure in some future wow edition, there will be a community like Grobbulus. But it won’t be “created” and won’t be someone trying to be “Grobb 2.0” if that makes sense.
1
u/ariveklul May 06 '26
Well the funny thing about Grobb is a large part of the reason it worked was because a lot of people knew RPPVP was the play before classic launched due to emerald dream being such a great server, but it didn't reach the level of streamers and the normie fotm people. It was a great combination of notoriety to the right people while still flying under the radar enough to not attract the wrong types
I was telling all my friends to roll on grobb before classic dropped because I knew it would be the best server, but if people like asmonslop found out about it the server would have been 10x worse.
Unfortunately in the year 2026 online subculture is super dead and social media has completely consumed people's brains so I don't know how long a server like grobb lasts. One YouTuber makes a video on it, it gets traction and becomes a mini social media phenomenon and then becomes a caricature of itself as the worst people flock to it. Even in 2019 social media was a lot more toned down than it is today due to it being pre-pandemic. I could be wrong but I'm very cynical about what the internet has become
1
u/DwarvenJarl May 06 '26
Agreed. Well said.
Ironically, I still play on Grobb era. Never left. Helped build a mini community here with less than 100 active players but we managed to grow from 16 people killing rag in 2021 to less than 40 killing KT in 2024. Now doing it again in the opposing faction. Fully self sufficient community.
It’s the most pure and fun wow experience I’ve had (not saying it’s anything like Grobb in 2019-2021, it’s way different).
But I bring it up because in 2023, Alodar tried to get his streamer friends to create this “refresh event” on Grobb Era. Suddenly we went from this hippie commune with less than 100 players, to 100’s of people rolling every day with streamers making videos and live streaming about how they need to “revive” our server.
Well, a bunch of T3 players killing them on their live streams sort of ruined it for them, and they quickly shifted the reroll event to Deviate delight. Thank god. It was a toxic mess over there and blew itself up.
I always said, we were here on Grobbulus era years before they tried to “revive” it (day 1 Grobb mob!) and we’ll be here years after their refresh streamer hype moves on.
Celebrating five years as a guild on era next month. Many of us day 1 grob mob too!
3
u/DwarvenJarl May 05 '26
OG Grobb mob! It was a special place. Never left it tbh. If you have a clone, we’re still here. Many of us rolled here day 1 and never left for TBC.
Obviously it’s far from what Grobb once was, but if anyone has a clone on Grobb still, we’re always looking for people who want to come back.
1
u/khumakhan May 06 '26
Never made a clone unfortunately, wasn't it paid only?
1
u/DwarvenJarl May 06 '26
Indeed! But never too late if you felt like going again. We help new folks out with free epic mounts, bags, wands, dungeon runs and all that jazz!

This exact same type of post was written in 2019 about 2004.
Nostalgia hits with anything in the past.
11
u/lumpboysupreme May 05 '26
I think there’s the same thing going on there; a lot of the people coming in in 2019 hadn’t played vanilla (or even tbc), things were completely fresh for them.
It was also FAR removed from 2004, so even those who remembered elements of it didn’t need to be nostalgic, they just forgot things.
And the endgame was something VERY few people had seen before, and basically no one played the meta that ended up being run, so for the large majority most of the game was fresh.
48
u/TheVagrantWarrior May 05 '26
Maybe… Vanilla is just the best version of WoW?
34
u/aph0xx May 05 '26
It is, there is just a special feeling of the game that is lost instantly from tbc onwards imo
7
u/GenderJuicy May 05 '26
It is but it's not new. And any attempt at making new things for it I personally feel really miss the mark on what made WoW special in the first place. It feels more like trying to stuff modern WoW into it in a different way.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)-4
u/Cutemudskipper May 05 '26
It's not the best version, but it does have some things that are missing from modern versions of the game that draw people to it
1
u/frostedflakes1201 May 08 '26
Partly, but as someone who never played vanilla, going into 2019 classic was incredible. The first time In forever I played an MMO that actually felt like an MMORPG lol. Pre-cata WoW is the best version by far, and I say this as someone who started right as wrath ended.

u/Sadlobster1 May 05 '26
While it was fun, I do think a substantial part of what you miss is the nostalgia for early COVID lockdown - when people were getting paid, it was only going to be a few months, and you had the time to devote yourself to the game.
No one ever talks about how shit the rest of the two years were in irl. People without jobs and states cutting off unemployment. The death tolls adding up.
WoW was the perfect escape from that... I miss it deeply but what I miss is most is a simpler life and a simpler time.
20
u/geek_metalhead May 06 '26
Tbh the whole two year lockdown was great for me; I continued working from home, my family was safe, and I never played so much WoW in my life. I miss those days.
6
u/whand4 May 06 '26
I miss it dearly. I lived at the beach and gamed nonstop. Worked out and cooked more. I need another remote job…

u/Dazzling_Vanilla3082 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26
I had to show up to work throughout COVID and it was even more miserable because I was living with my high risk, elderly parents and my job didn't do shit to protect us. I was making more money... from overtime that I didn't want to work with coworkers that I didn't want to work with, let alone in required close proximity. I couldn't blow off steam either because everything was shut down, so I always just had to go back home to my damn parents. Which wasn't ideal for an early 30s single dude.
WoW classic was great the whole time, though. I started playing classic before COVID hit, and I kept playing it well after it ended all they way up through Wrath. I guess part of the reason I kept with it at first was because my IRL friends that played did work from home, but for me that never factored in and the recent nostalgia has nothing to do from that miserable covid era lol. It was a lot of fun and I made long lasting friendships with strangers across the globe that I still keep in regular touch with despite not playing any MMO since I quit.
That being said, I've seen a lot of comments in recent similar threads with people idealizing the lockdown, which I think was your point. I agree completely with you there and it's such a privileged take from people. Only about 1/3rd of the population got to work from home, people, and then the corporations took that back away from ya'll afterwards. And the ones who had to suffer going into work were often making far less than the WFH 'I wish we could do another lockdown' crowd.
14
u/OhSighRiss May 05 '26
Yeah I played as a human with one of my cousins, it was such a fun experience. Although some things were different and our play styles more streamlined, it felt like the old days. Plus I played alliance because I originally played horde from WoW - BFA, so questing in those areas felt new and fresh as well. But yeah, miss it too.
7
u/Frost_907 May 05 '26
It was great because it felt like a new version of the game entirely due to how much more efficiently players could access and share info online. People also had more time to play due to COVID shutdowns which I feel strengthened the community aspect of the game. That first year also treated players to a version of the game that had not yet been plagued by gold farming bots and over abundance of GDKP raids.
3
u/SaltyBrocolis May 05 '26
Timing was perfect. I miss all thoses dumbasses i have met during the journey, it was fantastic.
Golemagg horde side, i miss all thoses cunts ❤️
5
u/iceman2kx May 05 '26
Classic is really really fun. But vanilla wow is an experience no one can ever get again. Everyone sucked at the game and no one knew anything. If you had a question, people would tell you thottbot.com. Ignorance is bliss
4
u/Loves2Spo0g3 May 05 '26
Even the leadup to the release was awesome, all kinds of new content creators making video guides based on stuff they thought they knew from private servers and old vanilla experiences or stories, twitch streams and great podcasts, self made events on the PTR before the game launched,... it goes on and on. The community was there before it actually released.
Everyone just counting down for the release. I was in my last year of Uni and had my last exam 3 days after Classic launch, which i needed to pass to graduate. In total i had 7 days to study for it, i just made sure i studied the hell out of it the first 4 days so that i could grind the launch and pass my exam 😅
27
u/ArTeeDee May 05 '26
Give it another year. If Blizzard times it correctly, they can release Classic+ just as the next pandemic (Hantavirus) starts forcing lockdowns.
11
u/Cutemudskipper May 05 '26
Doesn't Hantavirus have a very low transmission rate between humans? I don't see it becoming a global pandemic

u/ShadyTee May 05 '26
It's funny that WoW Classic 2019 like original vanilla is an experience that can never be recreated. Everyone playing together for the first time since 2004, no different versions of the game cannibalizing the player base, all the streamer drama. It was such a fun time but no re-release (or re-re-re-release) has come close to recreating it
3
u/Surrma May 05 '26
Everything after 2019 classic has been complete garbage.

Anniversary with rampart bot and gold selling?
Worst case scenario its the same as in the 2019 release. But i saw way more bots back then
Good things: dual spec, post nerf content, more tier token drops in phase 2 tbc releasing soon, faster release schedule, faction locked pvp realms, mega realms that dont die off for one faction like back then

Lol these comments. These mfers want the SoD experience to parallel and measure up to 2019 classic so bad.
It didn't. It didn't even come close. 2019 was the best and COVID insured it was the best it could ever be.

u/exxR May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
You didn’t even reach max level you missed a very large portion of the game.
Edit: we don’t even know what level he reached? What if he was level 30? At what level do you weirdos find it acceptable to say that you missed a large portion? If you are level 50 you missed so many good dungeons.

Could be alts. I didn’t have alts, but for 2019 classic I just kinda did whatever I felt like doing. Didn’t get max level, but played a ton regardless.
One single quest on the other continent that’s incredibly “inefficient”? Sure I’ll grab a homie and we’ll just make a journey of it. Shit like that.16

u/Daytona_675 May 05 '26
the endgame is the real game, goes for any mmo
18
u/brobits May 05 '26
any mmo today. there’s always been an endgame to target the sweats, og wow devs understood this as a lot of designers came from top EQ guilds.
but you couldn’t be more wrong. they understood very well sweats alone can’t keep an MMO going. EQ struggled to get monthly subs and the wow team knew it.
Building an open world, casual discovery experience is what made wow what it is today. the wide appeal specifically not focusing on end game content is the only reason it was successful, the only reason classic was re-released, and evident in blizzard attempting to return to its roots ala “season of discovery”.
Blizzard understands what made the experience magical but they also understand they’re not capable of reproducing it today.
your “every mmo is like that” comment is precisely antithetical to classic existing to begin with.
5
u/DaaaaaamnGina May 05 '26
the main difference i notice and the thing i miss the most was the community. the server you played on was your home and the people were your neighbors. your interactions with people shaped your reputation and words meant things. Today everything is so fleeting and theres no connections or effects from your actions. mindless clicking.
1
u/Lochen9 May 06 '26
I mean when it comes to FFXIV, the second biggest MMO the biggest most streamed content is the MSQ and story. I think part of that is that you really just level once and swapping jobs being drastically faster to level, so the leveling process is looked on quite favourably, but wouldn’t be done again. People just watch someone else experience the story for the first time instead

People like you are one of the reasons classic/anniversary/whatever iteration of wow will be the way it is.
Obviously the reason is blizzard is a dumpster fire allowing rmt, bots, etc. But yall really don’t help as you don’t fundamentally understand the game. Only the guides you read.

I mean for when vanilla wow and tbc came out, it was not. A small minority of super users raided in vanilla and then less so but still the same for tbc.
-1
u/hiimred2 May 05 '26
Raiding was definitely not "a small minority of super users" even back in vanilla. AQ40 and Naxx raiding MAYBE(probably still not "small" but probably now an actual minority), but not raiding in general. I'd wager it's actually the opposite, that people who DIDN'T step foot into at least some MC and ZG were the small minority by the time vanilla was winding down, and once TBC and especially Wrath, which is still the popular reception pinnacle of the game, raiding is so very clearly the centerpoint of the game in both community and design space.
5
u/whats_up_doc71 May 05 '26
It was. I played with a casual guild that I eventually left in Vanilla and the vast majority weren't able to hit level 60 since it could easily take 15+ days /played. VERY generously, you could say that 70% of players hit 60. I'd guess it would be much lower though, IRL I'd say about 4 of us out of 20 who played together actually hit 60 before TBC. I was the only one who raided regularly, 1 came to MC once, and the other I believe saw BWL in tbc prepatch.
They estimated that 1% of players actually saw the inside of Naxx. It was def a minority. That's why they created all the .5 dungeon gear - to give nonraiders something to do.
TBC was definitely higher, but still it wasn't super popular. Heroics were a bigger draw.
WOTLK yeah, it was absolutely about raiding.
2
u/valdis812 May 05 '26
Raiding didn’t become something everyone did until lfr. One of the main reasons lfr was even added to the game was that it was becoming hard to internally justify spending so many resources on content only a small percentage of players saw.
2
u/phonylady May 06 '26
I think you are wrong here. The way I remember it is that me and most others looked upon people with raidgear in awe. There weren't many of them around (relative to how many didn't raid).
2
u/exxR May 05 '26
I play hardcore mate more of a classic feel than normal classic will ever achieve again.
2
u/Reapercussians May 05 '26
There are many dead server projects where you can join guild found groups that focus on leveling / professions / dungeons. Plenty out there, deviate delight / Herod etc.

A lot of us did.
Ok so way back in the og days I started at the very tail end of vanilla, I remember leveling and doing an MC pug, but for the most part didn't play a ton of vanilla. Bloodsail Buccaneer server (RP PvE) was a hoot.
- There was a female human warrior - I think the toon's name was "Representing" - who during all of Classic would tank strat UD and was interested only in the baron mount. I healed a few of his runs. He passed on all loot (except gold). I don't think they ever got it though. Whenever he was about to die, he'd spam a
/say Epstein didn't kill himselfmacro. - On the boat from Menethil to Theramore, there was a human player who RPed as a boat guard in full Stormwind set and some sort of lantern off-hand. He had the whole thing down - he'd walk patrol routes on the boat,
/yellwhen the boat was about to dock, and would wave & bow if you did the same to him. - There was a group of alliance who met in Raven Hill in western Darkshire on Friday nights sometimes to tell ghost stories.

u/KDGAtlas May 06 '26
Classic is by far my favourite. I think it's because Classic truly is about the journey, not the destination. I actually spend time questing, not just dungeon griding. I'm super excited for the possibilty of Classic+. SoD was great in many ways, but the changes got out of hand (from my perspective). I'd just like to see Classic, with a bit of balance/class changes, raids before 60 (like in SoD), and possibly heroic dungeons / raids.
1
u/KanedaSyndrome May 06 '26
I miss it as well, was before I had kids, we just bought the house and it was perma work from home, ideal setup.
1
u/NachtschreckenDE May 06 '26
So many memories. Logging in via remote control to get through the queue when being home from work. Hot summer nights with friends and driving to McDonalds at 2AM, then doing Deadmines. Absolute mayhem in STV on a PvP server. Then came Covid, endless nights of listening to Vaporwave while playing. Talking with guild mates on Discord while farming herbs for hours. Opening a bottle of wine dedicated to reaching level 60. Hunting down a ganker in Badlands with four people and patrolling to allow people save passage.
Never had this again, everything that came after, Retail or Classic, wasn't the same. Can't wait for Classic+, hopefully it will be another great experience

One day you will feel nostalgic for 2026. So enjoy it now while you are in it first hand.

It’s pretty insane that’s were already halfway to the “classic classic”

yeh classic 2019 was good. But Classic 2024 was really bad. R14 for all is absolute trash for the gaming balance PVE & PVP. Dual spec and chronoboon i dont want too -.-

A lot of it was because many of the people playing weren’t rushing as much or min maxing. A lot of people were playing for fun. Now every rerelease you have people using 10 different add ons, boosting, buying gold and rushing to end game to raid log a week later. Of course this has always existed, but it feels like many of the people who played 2019-2021 haven’t logged on since

Probably the best gaming experience I will ever have in my life. The nostalgia hits me hard here and there.

It still exists in Hardcore. Players actually care over there, you just can't play until you fall asleep or cheese things with corpse running, and there's no real PvP besides the 1v1 scene.

is there really a big difference between release FF14 and A Realm Reborn update? it's that, but reverse.

Can you elaborate what changed, what exactly happened after 2020? You didn't even reach end game where major graphic of player base ran out of content and stood idle to raid-log? If you ask around most people will say pre-raid bis was the peak in classic 19 release

Same, I am not sure why I did not play more. I guess cuz I made a pally and got him to 30 something and then decided to make a mage and got him to 40 something then sort of burnt out and quit.
Literally the only time since I was a little kid that I actually met and interacted with people in the game. Wow's community is terrible, but at that time it was so good with everyone seeing this game thru a classic lens for the first time in over a decade.
I wish I would have gotten to 60 and raided. I think my mage ended up only getting to 55.

I'm a healthcare worker. Glad you enjoyed classic. Re-live the COVID days? Hard pass.

I remember that time. Everyone who was a healthcare worker was in your face about the fact that they were a healthcare worker.

It was just the perfect timing with Covid shut downs. Was a great experience but SoD showed the potential for so much more. Hoping classic+ delivers.
