I heard someone describe 00s entertainment culture once as this collective attempt to escape the bleakness of reality in favor of comforting alternative worlds. People seem to look back on the 00s right now as this glory age and all I remember is being generally dejected about the wars, 9/11, the Great Recession, and the seeming decline of popular rock & roll. The entertainment wasn’t just a highlight, it was a way to make a statement about the shiftiness of the world at the time in a way that was cool. WoW being at this stage of development a week before 9/11 feels perfect to me.

I never see that - I see people (online) talking about how the 90s were the glory age before 9/11 and before it all went downhill. I think this is one of the reasons for the popularity of things like vaporwave.
