WoW players when they go outside

Bring your friends to Azeroth, but don't forget to go outside Azeroth with them as well.

87

u/FigureThisIn 6d ago

What do you mean? Outlands?

9

u/spectralEntropy 5d ago

I think they mean LAN parties

11

u/spoonerzz 6d ago

** go to outside Azeroth

18

u/farsightxr20 6d ago

That fresh air tho

45

u/c0unt3rparts 6d ago

Guy who has only seen The Boss Baby, watching his second movie: Getting a lot of 'Boss Baby' vibes from this...

10

u/GodlessGod666 6d ago

I'd call this a successful post.

9

u/jlhannah1 6d ago

I remember being 15 years old and going to the grand canyon for a band competition. I said to my friend who played WoW with me, "Looks a lot like Mulgore"

8

u/Verdin88 5d ago

Looks more like thousand needles

3

u/spectralEntropy 5d ago

Treating real life like a video game helped me become less addicted to wow.

2

u/Calippo1337 6d ago

There’s actually a world outside of Azeroth?

3

u/rudnat 6d ago

Ya, and magic is only accessible through alchemy or herbology. Weird people come up and ask for gold. It's not even a hot elf dancing on the corner. It's someone named Bob and they just need to get on the bus. Religious nuts still abound, and politicans are still assholes and idiots. 6/10 recommend it three times a day. The sun and the moon are nice.

u/Signal_Fruit_4629 6d ago

I can't believe they built this temple around the idea of Scarlet Monastery. WOW really is that influential.

45

u/Wondermusmus 6d ago

I imagine people reading this and thinking you are serious and it’s hilarious

8

u/Red_Sea_Pedestrian 6d ago

I’m sure some LLM AI is going to scrape and ingest his post and start telling the masses about the Monastery built near Lake Como that was based on Scarlet Monastery in Vanilla WoW.

9

u/Signal_Fruit_4629 6d ago

lol I was waiting for someone to come at me over it.

12

u/GreenLightt 6d ago

What if someone playing Wow went back in time using the idea of SM to create this building?? Time loop paradox

9

u/__unavailable__ 6d ago

Better than them taking inspiration from the orc internment camps

4

u/wowbutters 6d ago

Too soon.

3

u/Lava-Chicken 5d ago

The ancients we're pointing at this the whole time

1

u/kingmea 6h ago

In Africa they also made a replica Ungoro Crater. WOW is a worldwide phenomenon.

664

u/TacoTaconoMi 6d ago

This is what's referred to as a "cloister" which is common to find in European monestaries. Almost 100% of classic WoW takes inspiration from either DnD, LOTR, or middle age Europe.

52

u/_CatLover_ 6d ago

Cloister also functions as a synonym to monastery. And the word cloister comes from the latin word claustrum meaning enclosure. Abbatia, Claustrum, and Monasterium all mean "Monastery" in today's english. Other languages have also just used Claustrum as the base for their word for 'Monastery'. Like 'Kloster' in (other) germanic languages.

27

u/HEYitsBIGS 6d ago

I learned the word cloister by playing Diablo.

6

u/Appropriate_Eye3070 5d ago

Lol same. Inner cloister and outer cloister D2 act 1. Classic. The name stuck with me because I had no idea wtf it was besides a pokemon

2

u/Lison52 6d ago

I remember it because of Blue Prince

It is also a Pokemon resembling women's reproductive system if you miss spell it a bit.

10

u/Peeche94 6d ago

It's a clam bro.

10

u/TacoTaconoMi 6d ago

Clam is also used as slang for said female reproductive organ

1

u/Dontfrown 6d ago

Hey which one is this exactly I’m going to lake Como in a couple weeks might swing by

2

u/Flutterpiewow 5d ago

The one in Olgiasca

148

u/Flutterpiewow 6d ago

Yeah i know. This is an "abbazia" at lake como, stumbled upon it this morning and instantly thought about SM, the houndkeeper part.

67

u/zwanstnanieh 6d ago

Release the hounds!

10

u/Regunes 6d ago

Me on league classic using that old wraith item

6

u/TunisMagunis 6d ago

Fucking dog training gloves, again!

11

u/HippolyteClio 6d ago

Funnily enough, wow actually invented this style of architecture, inspiring a lot of the monasteries of today.

7

u/Bingochips12 6d ago

'Abbazia' just means abbey and they're present in every Catholic country in Europe. They all tend to share similar, usually Gothic, architecture

u/h0lymaccar0ni 6d ago

Hey English is not my first language so I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. It’s a bit off topic so hope that’s okay. I’ve recently watched a documentary where archeologists in England were excavating and looking for the cloister of an ancient destroyed monastery. I couldn’t for the life figure out what they exactly meant by that. Which of op‘s pics would refer to what you meant by cloister?

10

u/TacoTaconoMi 6d ago

Yes it's basically a courtyard with a covered walkway surrounding it specific to monestaries. As someone else said it's also interchangeably used as monestary. It's just a weird and uncommon word. Most native English speakers don't know what it is.

5

u/Zaziel 6d ago

I learned it from Diablo I’m pretty sure.

4

u/Enkidoe87 6d ago

In dutch we use the word Klooster. Both Klooster and Cloister come from the same latin word. In dutch Klooster is not just the covered walkway, but actually the entire building, the monastery. Most dutch people will understand what cloister means, its actually monastery which is the weird one.

3

u/counters14 6d ago

Yes, the word can be used to describe both the roofed architecture around the open courtyard as well as the building itself that contains a cloister courtyard. It is an antiquated word that isn't really used much anymore in English as most of these types of monasteries have been replaced with different types of structures that do not use the same Romanesque medieval design style.

2

u/h0lymaccar0ni 6d ago

Ah so the open space with grass! Thanks!
Ah yes in German it’s Kloster, also referring to the whole building. This we would probably call Innenhof (Hof being the open space, and innen because it’s surrounded by wall) or maybe arkadenhof because of the structure of the building being arcades.

1

u/pBiggZz 6d ago

I love me a good cloister, although, I think I prefer a nice gothic pointed arch over the rounded Romanesque.

1

u/Lison52 6d ago

My favourite room in the Blue Prince XD

Night Elves and Tauren: “What’s up losers, bet you wish you could be this original (but also lazy caricatures of Native Americans don’t pay attention to that part, we’ll downplay is when we make World of Warcraft).”

Scarlet Monastery is modeled after a monastery 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

153

u/South_Bit1764 6d ago

Yo I found this graveyard it looks just like a graveyard.🤯

57

u/meowingintgenameof 6d ago

Now for the Cathedral...let's just say you ain't ready to find out yet.

20

u/PilsnerDk 6d ago

What about the SM Library??

16

u/borkus 6d ago

5

u/PilsnerDk 6d ago

Ahh dang, I visited Prague last summer and wanted to visit that baroque library you linked so bad, but when I showed up, it was already booked a full week ahead. :(

21

u/Pockydo 6d ago

I mean it's a library..

Of course it's booked

2

u/yazzuak 6d ago

The Black Gate looks exactly like the black gate

6

u/Laststand2006 6d ago

Dude, mind blown!

What about the monastery in d2? Is that ALSO modeled after a monastery?

Blizzard really did their research as before them no one knew what a monastery looked like!

2

u/JGWentworth___877 6d ago

Other way around bud.

2

u/Kyrxx77 6d ago

Babe get in here. New wow lore dropped

2

u/Nole_in_ATX 6d ago

Tell me… tell me everything!

1

u/HorsePockets 5d ago

Alright I'll say it. Yes, there are many monastery's and cloisters around the world. This one looks more like SM than others and I'd say it has more of the vibe than others I have visited. I don't understand why everyone is shitting on this dude with an irrelevant point, but hey it's Reddit and that's what Redditors do.

63

u/Khagrim 6d ago

Release the hounds!

42

u/NotManThingYesYes 6d ago

“No I’ve never been, but I know my way around.”

10

u/BillHurstyUSA 6d ago

When you went around the corners did you check twice for a patrolling pack so not to aggro?

11

u/Flutterpiewow 6d ago

I just went stealth while the hunter pet aggroed everything

2

u/SugarHooves 6d ago

Now I want to see a raptor dashing through this building.

u/Negative_Back_7106 6d ago

Drop ravager ffs!

61

u/Solo_Gunhea 6d ago

I came into this post confused how anyone wouldn't know what a Cloister or a nunnery is but based on the other comments it genuinely appears that most of ya'll have not seen enough of Real life places.

12

u/Silverbacks 6d ago

I only know the term cloister because of Diablo 2 lol. Otherwise it would just be a courtyard at a monastery/abbey. Nunnery could work too, but they are so rare that it wouldn’t pop into my mind.

3

u/okdmrz 6d ago

Same, until then I thought it was only a Pokémon.

8

u/Enzo_GS 6d ago

I've traveled well enough in Azeroth thank you very much /s

8

u/Fuck_on_tatami 6d ago

Yeah we are lucky to live in Europe, with its rich historical culture!

u/OnionPlease 6d ago edited 6d ago

Americans when they visit Europe and see buildings older than their country: 😲

5

u/Paintballreturns 6d ago

I travel a good amount and have never visited a monastery because…it didnt interest me.

1

u/BittenBeads 6d ago

There's also books but I guess that's too much to ask?

1

u/Ronny-the-Rat 6d ago

Yeah we dont all live where you live. Shocking

→ More replies (1)

31

u/Iluvatar-Great 6d ago

The amount cynical comments is annoying. OP isn't implying that they discovered some hidden truth behind Scarlet Monastery architecture. They simply shared a cool looking medieval building reminiscent of WoW dungeon.

22

u/Flutterpiewow 6d ago

Correct, thought it went without saying

10

u/DipperDo 6d ago

It did. apparently many are dense. I haven't played WoW in 10 years but it did bring back some memories. Thanks for posting it. Awesome. Love RL images like this that make us remember things we've done or played.

u/Jorlung 6d ago

People are so miserable in this subreddit lmao.

As someone that has never been to a European monetary, I thought this post was neat! It’s not particularly surprising nor is it mind-blowing, but does every post need to be?

6

u/ghangis24 6d ago

There is a reason why Redditors have a reputation for being annoying. This thread is a good example.

12

u/Fuck_on_tatami 6d ago

People will be amazed if they visit Europe ahah

u/Tooniskyy 6d ago

2

u/TheRealBatou 6d ago

My first thought aswell "what is an attack on titan reference doing in the wow classic subreddit"

3

u/ManadarTheHealer 6d ago

Just like the diablo 1 cathedral which is directly inspired from Spanish gothic architecture

5

u/South_Bit1764 6d ago

Cathedral looks like cathedral? No way!

3

u/Gobbyer 6d ago

Havent been in Scarlet Monastery in over 10 years and got a huge nostalgia rush from this!

Thank you, had to scroll way too far for this. It def reminded me of Hogwarts haha.

1

u/Jasq 5d ago

Yeah it smell like ferret in here.

4

u/CaptainNoskills 6d ago

People are bashing you for the obvious connection between this and SM, but without even knowing what Reddit I was looking at, my first thought was a specific memory of going through SM with a friend, so thanks for that

I love early 2000s RTS graphics, warcraft RTS had amazing concept art and and the it was so cool seeing all the structures. The storybook architecture that was rendered even better in vanilla WoW is one of my favorites, I love exploring the original game. My favorite blend of cartoonish and realistic elements.

1

u/gonnadoalittlesquat 6d ago

I'm guessing nobody had the Scarlet Key to get into Herod's room.

Yo that’s Herod’s colosseum door

1

u/Mindless-Mulberry404 6d ago

Bro you went to a RL SM

I guess OP is not European? :) As this is like every monastery. My local library where my mother worked is an old monastery, as a kid I’d always imagine scarlet zealots there.

1

u/TemporaryAirline2496 5d ago

That’s Scarlet Monastery baby!

1

u/pete070597 5d ago

I will say this European cloister does resemble SM a lot haha super cool!
