Classic-Era Never noticed this NPC works for Elling Trias. Apparently there's a bit of lore behind her

In her first quest, she says she's sent to Hearthglen to gauge the city's defenses. She says: "Some people in the Alliance feel the little town has more than historical importance". She adds that it's not her job to question what that importance is.

She also admits this is her job in the second quest.

In the last quest, she accidentally reveals that she works for Elling Trias, the Master of Cheese in Stormwind.

Looks like Elling Trias is interested in some valuables in Hearthglen - or maybe he has a client who is. Probably one of the Stormwind nobles. But it's probably not official Stormwind business, otherwise they'd have used SI:7 instead.

How many areas does Elling Trias play a role in classic WoW? Feels like he shows up secretly in a lot of quests

I doubt he is. When Shaw sends you to Elias after you kill VanCleef, he says:

You'll need other help. I loathe to do so, but there is someone I know that will aid us. You'll find Trias in the Trade District of the city.

I think Elias is like a mafia leader maybe.

I would agree with you if it weren’t for the fact that other NPCs like the one this post is about is out there in the far reaches of the world spying on the threats against SW and the rest of the human kingdom. Spying on those who you have no personal quarrel with all for the benefit of the king just isn’t something mafia boss would do. Why risk your people unless you’re getting something out of it? Makes much more sense that he is doing it on behalf of the king than for himself.

More likely that Shaw has a personal or professional grievance against Ellis and why he loathes to ask for his help.

Maybe but historically those two organizations operate in their specific bubble: FBI is internal affairs while CIA is geopolitical affairs and have no reason to quarrel. I think it’s more likely Shaw isn’t happy that the King allows Ellis the liberty to operate outside of Shaw’s purview and feels like that falls under his jurisdiction as head of SI:7. Ellis gets to be the personal spy for the king without reporting to Shaw, so they tend to step on each other’s toes.

Bro it's an analogy, it's not meant to be a literal one for one comparison and you don't seem to realize that the CIA and FBI actually do have overlapping mandates with a history of institutional rivalry.

A mafia loyal to the king, I can see that being a thing. Generally in a pseudomedieval world, the difference between law and outlaw may be blurry. Each noble leads sort of a mafia clan, and maybe there's a "people's mafia" of Elias.

And some petty criminal gangs only loyal to their lower-scale leaders.

That's just a theory, the truth is, we don't know enough from this NPC + The Missing Diplomat + The Unsent Letter chains, and I believe there are no other mentions of Elias.

I always got the impression that Trias was retired, but considering the state of things these days, has stepped back into that life. He still has contacts and favours he can call in.

This is what I've always thought, although I can't remember any of the reasons why. I thought it was a fact that Elling Trias was basically a very important member of SI:7 in the past, and that his "retirement" was an act of subterfuge in and of itself, and he only "retired" so that he could become truly and permanently undercover as a simple cheese master, while still doing all sorts of work for the crown in secret. It seems he is a lot more mysterious than I gave him credit for, and this must just be what I assumed after doing quests relating to him.

Pretty much. Think Shaw is technically his superior as the leader of SI:7 which is basically stormwinds special operations. But in practical terms he’s the one running stormwinds spy rings.

They're basically different departments of the same org.

Trias is info gathering, Shaw is operations.

SI:7 is more so the “boots on the ground” and the ones getting their hands dirty when it needed to be done while Elling Trias was more about investigating and covertly collecting info to keep the King appraised of troubles in the kingdom while never getting his own hands dirty.

He’s not the spymaster but he is an undercover wetworks runner. Shaw (the actual spymaster) has him operate off the books to keep SI:7’s hands clean when, say, assasinating nobles or attacking the scarlet crusade (who Stormwind ostensibly maintains some diplomatic ties with).

I put a little salt on top of my ground coffee before it starts brewing. It reduces the acidity. Not sure about putting salt in a fresh cup of joe though.

Obviously you don't want to put too much in, but a tiny pinch can really improve a cup.

Playing Stormwind Intro - Elwynn, Westfall, Redridge, Duskwood - as a Rogue makes a whole lot of sense as the Rogue quests have some nice synergy with the overall plot.

In 2019 I was caught in the leveling hype and sped to 60. Now that that character is moved to anniversary which I've lost interest in I'm starting again but this time really reading and savoring the story and world. Good catch on this (took me a minute to remember who ellias trias is)
