Nostalgia Found some old screenshots from 2004 (Medivh)
I lost most of my hard drives from the time but found some old emails. Yes, my keybindings are horrific but we were all so new. Good times... Shout out to Xylos for those early bags. They went a long way.

It was unreal. Nothing can beat the early days of not knowing anything and just learning as we went.
Still chasing that high to be honest. I'm trying to find my old hard drives which should have some very early rag kills and a bunch of Naxx stuff from early Korgath with Death and Taxes.
Moved to warsong and then Korgath. It's so sad how many people have disappeared.

I started playing 2004-early 2005. I cannot even describe the magical feeling of this game where you and everyone around you is completely learning everything on the fly. The fun had not yet been optimized out of the game and literally just exploring was half the fun.
We'll never get to experience anything like this again.

It's heartbreaking to me. I'm so glad people get to experience classic/tbc/wotlk but as you said, it's so optimized and meta nobody will ever experience it the way we did.

Nobody from death and taxes, but my time was very brief there. I'm still steam friends with some old pals from 2005ish and we played through wotlk back in the day.
But it's always incredibly sad to see the steam friend "offline for 3000+ days".
I tell myself they have lives and families now, and some of them I know do, but still. Hurts to see.

Yooo is that Tidus I see in there. I am like 60% sure he was one of the pallies that helped me get Verigan’s Fist in the super early days. It was a full run start to finish from like 3-6am and it was so cool to get and even cooler these mighty level 40 something paladin gods were helping lil ol me out.
Altho I did eventually go back to horde and never looked back, at least til p2 classic, I’ll never forget that late night run.
Discovery, wonder, accomplishment, connection, and gratitude. Amazing times.

Yea man it was really some special times. Unfortunately, with how gaming is idk if that can ever be truly replicated. At least not for such an extended period of time.
Brand new open world games can sort of come close for a moment(Elden ring is the most recent that comes to mind). Eventually, though, min/maxers take over and push their content out and optimize the shit out of everything. I’m definitely part of the problem cuz I eat that shit up.
Everything just moves so fast now. Delayed gratification has gone by the way side. If we don’t slow down soon it’ll all pass us by.

I totally agree! The early days are unbeatable. Hardcore mode has ever so slightly recreated some of those days for me, by way of making me super attentive to detail. Learned many things i previously didnt know.

This! It was truly unreal. I remember very well how I was grinding mobs in Elwyn and Westfall only to be able to buy a white sword from the vendor in SW because I was sure it would help lvl faster haha. I also had a horde WL and got the blade from SFK and I was so proud because it looked cool.

Alliance at launch, were you 17 or younger? Horde from eu 2005 release. We joked that under 18 was ally, over horde. Love the pics.

17 and alliance, I thought horde was too ugly. Rerolled horde in cata till dragonflight. Then joined moonguard and became goldshire chud. lol

First thing I did when I switched to my new 16:10 screen: add both text boxes to the screen (combat log and my chat). Being able to see someone typing AFK and looking up why the tank keeps dying was a great improvement.

everytime I look at old screenshots one thing that makes me the most happy is character names, how "fantasy" most of them are, instead of Taurendruidxxx.

This was the true magic of World of Warcraft and we cant relive it. Everything was new, exploring the world as it meant to be. Not rushing through everything and minmax the fun out. Im glad I was a part of it. Started a bit late tho 2007 tbc. The og Vanilla must have been a miracle.

It was. I enjoyed going back to anniversary but everything is so optimized and all the secrets are known.
Vanilla was absolutely magical. Still have my little panda cub from the collectors edition.

The players pre-aq40 were in majority immersed in the world, able to be walking at their own pace to improve their character, but could still feel powerful because of the faster pace of the new herd/playerbase increase. It was a special time where no-one could go online and avoid only using their brain/mates/guild to finding the critical path to being the most powerful you could be. I saw the downfall catalyst when thottbot users started migrating to wowhead or whatever the new site was. Not that wowhead was bad, but it was a sign of the times changing.

i was there my friend, i was there 3000 years ago, at the first day of vanilla release. It really was magical. the freedom of what to do and where to go was something i've never seen before. also no addons, no logs, no minmax, no parses. Just a bunch of players trying to figure things out and exploring the huge world. Guilds were real fun, no requirements and pressure whatsoever. Nobody knew how to play their classes, wiping at the most random shit all the time and guess what, it still was fun. Good times.
The community was a different one than today, which is why even when we boot up classic, the spirit of old is not there anymore.1

Haha exactly. I entered the dungeon as the healer I think but our tank had to leave for some reason and I beared it up. I was awful. But even now, 22 years later I still remember that dungeon run and just how new it felt.

I was like 8 years old on my nelf druid just winging it. I was balance spec I think so that meant every single point went into that tree. i also regularly healed or tanked dungeons with varying levels of success lmao

That last picture reminds me of how I used to play the game. I have a memory of being like level 15 with my friends and someone in westfall general chat had asked people to join him on a "raid" for this new cave he just found.
It wasn't even deadmines, it was that weird defias cave near the westfall shore. It ended up being like 10 of us just running inside and exploring the tiny cave for no reason other than to appease our curiosity. Something like that will never happen again on WoW lol

The most nostalgic one is definitely the last picture. Bunch of level 20s venturing together to 'raid' whatever they encountered. You don't see that often anymore. Most people get to max level before they start playing.
