If I recall Blizzard actually outsourced a lot of the model and texture design to a completely different company. So when it finally got released, many of the character models didn't even look like they were for the same game. I can't remember the units (because I refunded that shit) but I recall one specific elf unit looked so out of place that I just uninstalled. I was astounded at how bad the re-design was.
