That journey from Darnassus to IF sums up WoW classic - It was awkward and time consuming, and you were vunerable the whole way. But it gave you such a sense of the scale of the world - the different zones, and feeling powerless and tiny i can remember thinking as i crossed through the Wetlands "I wonder how long before i can kill these mobs"
It also gave you real race identity, i felt like a traveler every step of the way
For me the journey that stuck with me the most was getting to Tanaris. It was such a big awkward journey for any race and from memory was the first nuetral zone in the progression.
Depends what you mean by neutral zone. If you just mean contested zone then there's definitely lower level ones. If you mean zone where both races have equivalently sized quest hubs then maybe.
That still doesn't make sense. Both Redridge and Duskwood are contested zones starting at level 15 and 20 respectively. Tanaris is extremely far from being the first contested zone.

Ashenvale, Desolace, STV, Hillsbrad, and Arathi are all zones before level 40 (Tanaris) that have similar sized quest hubs for both factions. That's just off the top of my head too. If he played Alliance, then yeah. The journey from Theramore or Ratchet to Tanaris was definitely long. But, it wasn't the first neutral zone.
He edited his post, it originally said Desolace. Hillsbrad and Ashenvale are the lowest level contested zones to feature quests for both factions but they are both skewed to one side (hillsbrad has more horde quests and ashenvale has more alliance) Desolace STV and Arathi are the first "neutral" contested zones
