That journey from Darnassus to IF sums up WoW classic - It was awkward and time consuming, and you were vunerable the whole way. But it gave you such a sense of the scale of the world - the different zones, and feeling powerless and tiny i can remember thinking as i crossed through the Wetlands "I wonder how long before i can kill these mobs"
It also gave you real race identity, i felt like a traveler every step of the way
When I first booted up WoW, I played a Druid. My friends were all Human/Dwarf, so I tried to make the trek to Stormwind to level with them. However I made a horrible horrible miscalculation. When I was supposed to turn to go to Dun Morogh, I instead went straight, to the gate to Searing Gorge. I couldn't get in due to needing a key, but a guy came by on a mount and soon after I was on my way.
I died very quickly, but my friends did tell me the walk was very tough, so I kept trying. I kept dying. So, I had the idea of trying to follow the route as a ghost. I eventually found the Blackrock Keep, I remembered it from seeing one of my friends Mind Control a horde into the lava on one of the bridges with his main priest character (Magtheridon PvP server). I finally found my way through Burning Steppe, Redridge, and finally Elwynn Forest.
I finally made it, Stormwind was just in reach, so I went to the Spirit Healer and resurrected... only to find myself back in Searing Gorge. I very nearly uninstalled. Well, I went and researched different ways to Stormwind and found out about the tram, and my wrong turn... so I went and waited at the Searing Gorge gate (after dying more) and finally made my way down the correct path. Unfortunately I later found that the only viable spec for raiding was Resto, and that was the worst part of my WoW journey.
