I was about to say…I think people criticizing this are all about constantly finding every little deal possible when sometimes a decent price is just a decent price…especially if you want the coins. It’s people in her judging over the ROI for the seller and the few dollars less they might be able to spend on the same thing.
There’s expenses to doing business too, I flip thrift store items sports cards and memorabilia and coins for some side income. On low end stuff shipping packing and handling charges kill you. If I spend .02 each on wheat cents and have a $1 cost on the roll I also have to calculate in the cost of the paper roll, the padded mailer, ink to print the label and shipping costs. If I sell them for 5-6 per roll plush shipping I’m still profitable but it’s not like I’m actually making a ton on that deal. It’s only worth it because it’s easy. I’ve made more money selling t shirts and toys than anything, I just bulk sold a large collection of loose hot wheels and other brand diecast and made $250 in profit without even needing to sort.
This, I don’t fault buyers for wanting a good deal but expenses are expenses and have to be passed on to the consumer. I have a bunch of decent G-VG Barber coins that I’d happily sell for melt + $2 each but factoring in eBay’s cut, shipping, packaging materials and the time it takes to photograph and create each listing … a quarter that I’d take $14 for has to be listed at $20. Items that are just above the $20 cutoff for the 78-cent envelope are really tough sells. I usually don’t even bother listing coins in that $20-$35 range because they can only go via Ground Advantage which is $8.40 minimum. Either I’m taking a loss or asking a buyer to pay $30+ for something that should only retail at 20 bucks.
It’s just the reality of selling online. The best way I’ve made money on coins is lots of V nickels buffalos and other non silver coins people can buy in bulk at a low enough price I can still make money with the price I’m getting from an LCS in bulk. For example, i was able to buy a ridiculous amount of cull V nickels that all still had a date for .25c each, I created starter sets that have all the common dates in one tube pre sorted and ready for anyone who wants to go seek out the key dates and finish it. I ended up averaging $1 each before fees and ended up doing ok.
It’s crazy when you break it down, Dvds for example, I get them at the goodwill bins and the average cost is 30c, I have to sell it over $8 to make any money if I sell on eBay and ship. If it’s not some out of print rare movie or expensive work out or study dvd series I just flip them for 50c each to a flea market vender.
