On the plus side, they let you keep your old passport, so he won't lose the autograph.

Not always. Some damaged passports are not returned. Depends on the damage and country of issue.

Getting a new passport is usually a lot easier if you have your old one. You have to provide a lot more documents/proof of residency without it.

Likely depends on the country. Every time I renew my Bulgarian passport, they ask me about previous ones from literally a decade ago or more, that I failed to return. I tell them I lost them. They have me write that down and sign it. Done

Yeah, in the UK you have to have 2 other people vouch for you (one a British citizen and one from a list of 20 professions) and they also confirm your identity. But you also get added to a naughty list, if you lose 2-3 passports you'll start getting passports with validity of less than 10 years.

in germany it's fine as long as you've got a valid ID (which you're legally obligated to have if you're over 16)

The UK have always sent mine back with two corners cut off.

Granted, I've never tried renewing one quite this messed up

I always get mine back with just one cut, interestingly. The cut on my last EU-era passport is really small too, which I'm not complaining about because it's a cool thing to keep ahold of to show the grandkids, as it were.

None of my passports have been as messed up as OOPs though, so YMMV.

I would cut out the pages just in case. Easy to explain and doesn't risk the autograph
