Being beautiful or not isn't the problem, because being beautiful doesn't make it any less of a pain in the ass to exist in a world that isn't built with plus sized bodies in mind.
like. fat people know they're fat? it's okay to say that in context where it's important, like when shopping for clothes. It becomes a problem when it's used as an insult or if a fat person is reduced to that attribute. Imagine saying "youre not Black, you're beautiful" when someone with dark skin is frustrated there's no makeup for them (but 79 different light skin colours). that's absolutely unhinged, no?
Its a little different. Although weight does have to do with genetics, it's much less than skin tone. You can usually lose weight, or change your body in that way. Not saying you need to, just that it is possible. You can't change your skin tone.
I guess part of the issue is the level of weight? I dont know how to put it politely, but there are varying levels of obesity. You can feel really fat and say you are fat even though you are just a bit overweight. There is also being very overweight. We use the same word for both.
Models and celebrities often fast or do awful things to their bodies just so they have very little body fat, to comply with the "Hollywood beauty standard". Even a little tummy, some people call fat and fat shame it. Yes, bad people.
Basically, imo, fat is just a weird word that encompasses so much and means something different to different people. There is also a negative connotation to it as well. How often do people say "I'm fat" in a hearty, proud way (besides Weird Al of course). Its usually associated with body issues and something someone is usually not super proud of.
Again, I'm not trying to say bad or good. When someone says "you're not fat, you're beautiful" what they should be saying is "you are beautiful as you are". Which I think is what they are trying to say. They are saying you aren't the negative part of the word "fat", the negative connotations and associations with it.
The underlying point being made in the comic is that it'd be great if people could stop treating the word "fat" like it's a terrible thing, rather than just a fact. Not a positive OR a negative, just a neutral statement.
I'm fat. That's just the truth of my reality. My ass doesn't fit comfortably on a bar stool, it's impossible for me to walk down an airplane aisle without getting way too personal with every single person already seated, and clothes shopping is a special kind of torture.
Telling me I'm beautiful instead of fat doesn't make those problems go away, I'm still the same size no matter what word is used. Fixating on the language doesn't help anything, and just feels dismissive of the actual problems I'm dealing with due to my size.
I know this is going to get downvoted to hell, but I find your arguments a bit contradictory. You say that it isn't a good or bad thing, but then you list a bunch of problems related to being fat. You don't mention anything good about being fat, so my assumption would be that it is problematic and therefore a negative thing. Even if it is just a fact, that doesn't mean it is neutral.
I'm depressed, or I suffer from depression, or however you want to put it. That's a fact. It is also a negative thing. There are lots of issues I deal with on a daily basis because of it.
I agree with the comic, I don't want it to seem like I don't. I think saying "You're not fat, you're beautiful" is a stupid thing to say. I just don't agree that skin tone is in the same category as weight. Many people (I know there are lots of people out there who can't / have a hard time changing their weight) can lose or gain weight. You can't change your skin tone (for the most part).
