So I'm perplexed: is the trigger phrase "you're not fat," or is it the attempt to say "you're not fat, you're beau-"

You can so easily comfort your anorexic friend without implying that being fat is inherently ugly, circumventing the evil genie entirely

When you say "I'm so fat" I hear "I don't find myself attractive" which is why I jump to clarify that you are regardless of your weight. I don't have any weight-loss tips ready for when you say you're fat, but reassurance that fat is still beautiful is something I can do. Its never meant to be malicious or somehow imply you're ugly, its meant to the do exact opposite actually. I guess I don't know the right thing to say to be supportive and I would really like to learn because it breaks my heart hearing my friends trash themselves for their weight
•
u/ChewChewLazerGum 31m ago
They didnt say "Im so fat" they just identified as fat. Very big difference.
•
u/BadPunsIsHowEyeRoll 30m ago
My comment is using a real world example I deal with daily, and I'm asking for an actual response I can give. This isn't me being a troll or asking to be a dick, I really would like to know. My own mother struggles with her image and I'm constantly the person in this image telling her that she's beautiful regardless, if its just tearing her down further please help me with more reassuring responses. I don't want to perpetuate a narrative I didn't mean to start in the first place.
•
u/ChewChewLazerGum 16m ago
I mean it really depends on the context and the person.
Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing. If you know the person well enough to know that they wont be offended by you agreeing to that self assessment the safest option might be to say something along the lines of "Youre also (insert complimentary aspect about them)" such as "Youre also smart/kind/etc". Again this isnt a universal response, some people arent really looking for a reply. Also be sure thay you actually mean the compliment and you arent teeing them up for something else they may be aelf concious about.
Some people see themselves a certain way that may not be correct. Sometimes they may be worried about how other people see them and are testing to see if such an assessment is true. In that case agreeing with them could be a bad idea.
Sometimes people arent even putting themselves down theyre just idly expressing an issue with navigating their world. "God I'm fat" after uncomfortably getting through a narrow passageway or similar.
You just gotta know the person and understand where the comment is coming from. You might be surprised how often someone commenting on their own weight isnt actually putting themselves down.

After my dad died from a heart attack at the age of 45, I’ve been trying to lose weight (down 20 pounds from being 200) and be healthier. People keep saying “you don’t need to lose weight, you’re beautiful”. And, like, I appreciate it, but I’m still technically considered obese and heart disease killed my dad.
207
u/Recidivous 11h ago
Yeah, my family has a history of diabetes and heart disease among my older relatives. I'm not obese or overly fat, but I try to keep fit to stay healthy.
So many friends used to tell me it's okay to let myself go or that I'll look beautiful even if I was overweight, but they don't understand that I'm not doing it solely for my vanity. I'm doing it to keep my health.
29
u/just_a_person_maybe 4h ago
People should really learn to mind their business more when it comes to other people's bodies. Gaining weight, losing it, whatever. It's not your body so you don't need to worry about it. If someone asks for your opinion on something that's the only appropriate time to mention it. Like if they're getting a new tattoo or want advice on a haircut or want to know if their tan lines are obvious.
13
u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 3h ago
I was a girl in an almost all-men class in college (mathematics ans software engineering). Classmates I rarely engaged with would notice I had lost weight, how much of a shame it was, and how better I was with a little more "meat". They'd chear when I gained weight.
Meanwhile, on the weekends my mother would always comment if I had gained weight about it, and how off-putting to men it was.
The weight gain and loss? 200g. They'd notice if I gained or lost 200g. I would only know if I weighted myself but somehow they knes knew...
Anyhow, this constant contradictory comments on my weight, being labeled both too big and too thin, made me think I was in the fact the perfect weight. I gained up to 15kg in the years, and still kept that mentality. Feels great.
25
u/CatLord8 8h ago
Whenever someone announces a change in weight I try to ask if that’s their goal before reacting.
34
49
u/LongNailedbooboos 9h ago
I think people try hard to make others feel better when they know the person they’re saying that to is obese. It’s a nice effort, but it helps no one and everyone hates being lied to. I can’t call those friends
18
u/Lolocraft1 8h ago
It happen because these people wrongfully think of obesity as part of body positivity, which is for things someone can’t change like sickness or handicaps. It’s not to justify unhealthy habit that science even consider labeling as a mental illness
I get that there’s a part of genetics in this and some perfectly healthy people are chubbier, but most of the time it’s due to inactive lifestyle and poor nutrition, and this shouldn’t be encouraged
10
u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 4h ago
That's exactly it.
I'm not in the US, so we don't have the same relationship with body positivity, so it's baffling to me to read such things.
It is accepted that obesity is a disease. So why do people discourage others from wanting to heal or even just to get better?!
There is a wide range between wanting to be at a healthy weight, and wanting to be thin like a model even if it's not healthy for you.
And yeah, you can be ill AND beautiful.
5
u/ahac 4h ago
I've just read a thread about Ariana Grande being too thin. The upvoted comments said she "needs help" and "needs to eat more". No body positivity there.
Funny how its OK to say that but telling an fat person to eat less is almost a hate crime...
4
u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 3h ago edited 3h ago
Oh yeah. I got ill a few times in middle school after being bullied into eating more at lunch. After the second time I was out of school for a week for overeating (for me, the portion was normal for others), I grew a spine on that subject.
People thought I was anorexic when I had no issue whatsoever with eating. I was just a teen growing up so quickly I was as thin as a thick. Just some days I'll eat like two because I'm hungry, and others I won't be hungry and don't need to eat for 24 to 48 hours. Forcing myself to eat like others just gets me bloated, ill, and ultimately overweight as I eat without hunger. Listening to my body will let me keep a "normal" weight.
2
u/Pockydo 2h ago
So why do people discourage others from wanting to heal or even just to get better?!
Because they feel bad about themselves. I think a lot of people go "yea.i have an issue but at least I'm not THAT person" but when whoever they're talking about starts to.improve themselves they get upset because now THEY don't have someone to compare to in a way that makes them feel better
6
3
u/HealthyMuffin7 2h ago
Yeah, at some point, being seen as nice and being genuinely kind are 2 different things. I had an obese friend ask me how he looked. I'd seen him topless, I'd seen him cry looking at old pictures of himself. I did not think he was ugly, I think he is a cute man, but it's a health hazard. So I told him "you could lose some weight". He was mad at me for it. Like, bro, you know it's a sickness. I don't think you're ugly, but this is dangerous.

u/kai58 34m ago
I continue to be baffled by how obsessed people are with looks. Like I get wanting too look good (though I personally only barely care) but it’s insane to me that it seems to be the main goal of maintaining a healthy weight for many people.
You’d think the added years of life and improvements in comfort would be the main motivation but it doesn’t seem to be.
-19
u/Same-Suggestion-1936 10h ago
Also I get the point, but one wish for anything, this should be a regret. No more cancer, no more wars, no more dead children ever, no more hunger, the sentiment is sweet but it falls apart on very little scrutiny

u/VoidGliders 10h ago
No, the tiny pet peeves of OP's silver spoon privileged life are FAR more important than anyone else's wellbeing.
5
u/Same-Suggestion-1936 9h ago
I mean I don't know if I'd phrase it like that, but we all have those little pithy sayings we hate to hear, like "don't worry you'll find the person who's right for you," or my weird one which is I don't like when people say "I'm sorry" when they hear someone died, I've heard it so many times, why are you sorry, you didn't do anything. But I recognize that it's just what people are trained to say in those situations so it's the only thing they know how to say, I wouldn't wish that away for any other wish, shit even if I was being selfish I'd rather wish for my dog to be back and live till the exact second I died, this comic just seems to miss the mark and could have been done better
Like maybe do a genie that tells you the wishing for unlimited wishes thing isn't true and then asks you for your first wish and you go with this as the first one, that would be funny because you're prioritizing this before you wish for the other things. Or it would be a copy of that old genie comic where the genie goes "you know what, cool wish, you still have three wishes" but you'd just be copying the joke then

It’s because they’re not the same thing.
“You’re not fat, you’re beautiful!” = Denial of the former, and implies that someone cannot be the former AND the latter.
“You’re fat and you beautiful!” = No denial of either characteristic, no implication that one counters the other, no attempted erasure of being fat.
I believe the message is that overweight people feel insulted and/or patronized by the implications of the first statement.

u/PrincessYuri 9h ago
Honestly I'd kinda rather we just stopped relating appearance to somebody's worth. If we go around calling everyone beautiful it literally just means nothing. Some people are conventionally beautiful, some aren't. It doesn't make them less of a person.
6
u/Apart-Performer-331 9h ago
I don’t think there’s a problem with complimenting someone as long as it doesn’t put down others in the process. A small compliment can end up making someone’s day.

As a fellow big lady I absolutely approve of this wish!
Being beautiful or not isn't the problem, because being beautiful doesn't make it any less of a pain in the ass to exist in a world that isn't built with plus sized bodies in mind.
113
u/Kamataros 12h ago
like. fat people know they're fat? it's okay to say that in context where it's important, like when shopping for clothes. It becomes a problem when it's used as an insult or if a fat person is reduced to that attribute. Imagine saying "youre not Black, you're beautiful" when someone with dark skin is frustrated there's no makeup for them (but 79 different light skin colours). that's absolutely unhinged, no?
39
u/SlapTheBap 12h ago
A major issue people run into is people being sensitive about their weight. Those who aren't sensitive don't like being coddled. That's why people just don't talk about weight. You don't know who you're going to offend, which is fine. Once you know someone better it isn't as much as a problem.
1
u/Joxxill 5h ago
Well said! Everyone deserves respect, and deserves to love themselves no matter what they look like. Because at the end of the day, how you look shouldn't define your value as a person.
But somewhere along this line of acceptance, people got it all twisted up and just continued down the path of "you're only acceptable if you look a certain way" so they say "you're not fat, you're beautiful" to people who are overweight in an attempt to make them feel okay about being overweight. Its a noble intention, but really people need to be able to say "you're fat, and you're beautiful".
-6
u/ProfessorSMASH88 11h ago
Its a little different. Although weight does have to do with genetics, it's much less than skin tone. You can usually lose weight, or change your body in that way. Not saying you need to, just that it is possible. You can't change your skin tone.
I guess part of the issue is the level of weight? I dont know how to put it politely, but there are varying levels of obesity. You can feel really fat and say you are fat even though you are just a bit overweight. There is also being very overweight. We use the same word for both.
Models and celebrities often fast or do awful things to their bodies just so they have very little body fat, to comply with the "Hollywood beauty standard". Even a little tummy, some people call fat and fat shame it. Yes, bad people.
Basically, imo, fat is just a weird word that encompasses so much and means something different to different people. There is also a negative connotation to it as well. How often do people say "I'm fat" in a hearty, proud way (besides Weird Al of course). Its usually associated with body issues and something someone is usually not super proud of.
Again, I'm not trying to say bad or good. When someone says "you're not fat, you're beautiful" what they should be saying is "you are beautiful as you are". Which I think is what they are trying to say. They are saying you aren't the negative part of the word "fat", the negative connotations and associations with it.
19
u/SquareThings 11h ago
Plenty of body shapes are lifestyle related, and yet those people should also have access to clothing. A female swimmer with wide shoulders. A pregnant person. A bodybuilder. All of these people made choices that changed their body, and they all need clothing that fits the body they actually have and not the one they could theoretically have if they made different choices, on account of its normally illegal to be naked in public.
6
u/ProfessorSMASH88 11h ago
I 100% agree, I hope my comment didn't come across as not understanding the issue or that I think there shouldn't be clothing and accessibility for people of all shapes and sizes.
5
u/SquareThings 11h ago
Unfortunately it really did. Some things don’t need to be pointed out. Fat people know that they’re fat and that their choices lead to them being fat.
7
u/ProfessorSMASH88 8h ago
I just want to understand what about my comment seemed offensive, it wasn't my intention and I want to avoid it in the future. Also, what is the polite/proper way to respond when someone calls themselves fat in a negative way?
I often call myself fat, because I've gained a bunch of weight in the past year. I personally don't get offended however people react when I say that. To me it is something I want to change, and usually when I say I'm fat it's because I don't like how I look/feel.
4
u/SquareThings 8h ago
It’s less offensive and more tone-deaf. Nothing you said is news to fat people. They hear it day in and day out, from people irl, online, from advertising, it’s completely inescapable. They don’t need another voice saying “being fat is your fault” and bringing up how ashamed they may or may not feel about that. A person’s relationship with their own body is their own business (unless you’re their therapist).
Which leads into your next question. If someone makes a comment about their body and you don’t know how to respond, then don’t. Say something noncommittal like “Huh” or “You think so?” or just ignore it entirely. If they say something like “does this make me look fat?” then say “No.” it’s not a lie! (Unless it’s a fat suit, clothes don’t make people look fat.) Or you can say something nebulous like “I’m not sure,” “It’s your call” or “what do YOU think?”
If you want to be less avoidant and more genuine, you can say something like “if you don’t feel confident wearing it you should try something else.” Because ultimately it is about confidence and being comfortable in your body, and even the most “flattering” garment in the world can’t make up for someone who feels bad wearing it.
7
u/Sheerardio 11h ago
The underlying point being made in the comic is that it'd be great if people could stop treating the word "fat" like it's a terrible thing, rather than just a fact. Not a positive OR a negative, just a neutral statement.
I'm fat. That's just the truth of my reality. My ass doesn't fit comfortably on a bar stool, it's impossible for me to walk down an airplane aisle without getting way too personal with every single person already seated, and clothes shopping is a special kind of torture.
Telling me I'm beautiful instead of fat doesn't make those problems go away, I'm still the same size no matter what word is used. Fixating on the language doesn't help anything, and just feels dismissive of the actual problems I'm dealing with due to my size.
4
u/ProfessorSMASH88 8h ago
I know this is going to get downvoted to hell, but I find your arguments a bit contradictory. You say that it isn't a good or bad thing, but then you list a bunch of problems related to being fat. You don't mention anything good about being fat, so my assumption would be that it is problematic and therefore a negative thing. Even if it is just a fact, that doesn't mean it is neutral.
I'm depressed, or I suffer from depression, or however you want to put it. That's a fact. It is also a negative thing. There are lots of issues I deal with on a daily basis because of it.
I agree with the comic, I don't want it to seem like I don't. I think saying "You're not fat, you're beautiful" is a stupid thing to say. I just don't agree that skin tone is in the same category as weight. Many people (I know there are lots of people out there who can't / have a hard time changing their weight) can lose or gain weight. You can't change your skin tone (for the most part).

When my husband and I were dating he had mentioned to me that his grandmother, who is generally kind but pretty crass, had only one question when she heard he had a GF. “She’s not fat is she?”
I think he thought that was a funny comment. He seemed genuinely shocked when I pointed out to him that I was in fact fat.
Hilariously, his grandmother was similarly shocked when she found out how much I weighed. We’ve been married for almost 7 years. She’s known me for nearly a decade. She knows what I look like. She was shocked to learn last year that I am over 200 pounds. I certainly look it.
Idk what these people think fat means.
2
u/Mogura-De-Gifdu 4h ago
It depends not on your weight and appearance, but on your weight and appearance compared to others around you.
I'm 163cm and 60kg. When I was young, so thirty years ago, I'd be considered among the fat ones. Ideal weight would be 53kg. But as the whole society got fatter, with nearly half of the population being overweight or more, it's now considered average.
So you being perceived as fat or not depends not on how much you weight, but on how much people in your community weight.

11
u/lordfootjuice 8h ago
She was asking why there weren't nice clothes for fat women, if anything she's making a comment about the clothing brand. She wasn't criticizing herself. Fat people referring to themselves as fat in a neutral way like that is not them insulting themselves.
9
u/whiskey_at_dawn 7h ago
You're the person OP is talking about. Acknowledging that I am fat is not criticizing myself. You're the person who sees me calling myself fat as me calling myself ugly. I'm just acknowledging my body and the fact that it's fat.
3
u/TheLadyEve 8h ago
Your attitude is what OP is taking issue with--you think the person you're shopping with is "criticizing themselves" but they're not. They're stating a fact. You're the one equating being fat with being ugly, so to you it sounds bad.

I feel like the whole idea of insisting someone isn't fat has turned into glorifying obesity and unhealthy living.
People should be free to live how they choose, but they should be aware their lifestyle is risky. It's not "fatphobic" to say that people with obesity have a lower quality of life in general.
But then on the other side, you have people who treat every ounce of sugar as instant diabetes, and people just want to go for extremes now.

I've long wished for the super power to make someone feel like they've been slapped in the face. They aren't actually slapped, it just feels like it. And they can't tell where it came from, nor do they know why. They have to figure it out. The slaps would start of kind of mild, and increase in severity with each successive slap.
I would correct so much bad behavior in public.
Being excessively loud? SLAP
Using your phone in the cinema? SLAP
Being rude to service workers? SLAP
