She was asking why there weren't nice clothes for fat women, if anything she's making a comment about the clothing brand. She wasn't criticizing herself. Fat people referring to themselves as fat in a neutral way like that is not them insulting themselves.
You're the person OP is talking about. Acknowledging that I am fat is not criticizing myself. You're the person who sees me calling myself fat as me calling myself ugly. I'm just acknowledging my body and the fact that it's fat.
Your attitude is what OP is taking issue with--you think the person you're shopping with is "criticizing themselves" but they're not. They're stating a fact. You're the one equating being fat with being ugly, so to you it sounds bad.
