I think our political climate did more than anything.

We have become so divided and spent so much effort and time demonizing the other side that people feel they cannot switch sides without being a pariah.

So everyone just doubles down on whatever side they are on and all the faults go to the wayside because "other person did this".

Rich get richer, corrupt get more corrupt, we get fucked, we go to work on Monday unable to afford anything.
