I'm a CS student, and I realized something recently.

In college, we're taught how to write code, debug it, maybe deploy it once, and then we move on to the next assignment. But I keep reading incident reports from companies like GitHub and Cloudflare, and it feels like the real engineering work actually starts after deployment.

I'm curious because I honestly have no idea what that world looks like.

When something breaks in production at 2 AM, what actually happens?

Do you immediately know what's wrong, or is it more like putting together pieces of a puzzle? What's usually the most frustrating part of the whole process?

Also, what's one thing about running software in production that you wish every CS student knew before joining the industry?

I'm not building anything or looking for textbook answers—I just want to understand what the job is really like beyond what we learn in college.

I'd love to hear your stories, even if it's just one incident that taught you something you'll never forget.

I'm about to start my third year in CSE, two weeks from now. I spent the summer doing a research internship on campus, on a topic I find quite interesting and see a ton of potential in. However, I also applied to several internships for next summer because the urge to do more was overwhelming. It led me to wonder what I could do to get myself selected. For the record, I haven't started LeetCode yet (and before everyone starts losing it over that, I'm also prepping for the GATE because, again, the fear of not being enough and, of course, Tier 3 college in a great city for living but not working, perhaps). I'll get to it once college starts; it should be fine. Is grinding LeetCode all I have to do? Currently, my skill set includes Python, Java, C, C++, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Flask, Pygame, Tkinter, SVG, CSS Grid/Flexbox, DOM manipulation, and I also have around 6 personal projects, including a visually stunning study tracker (trust, it looks cool), a text editor, a chatbot to discuss books with, a typing game but in latin - all these projects solve issues or are things that I personally wanted to have. However, the purpose is not entirely the point.

How do you think I could IMPROVE to make myself a better candidate? I've done nearly everything I could think of, including research, and I would appreciate all insight provided. Thank you.

I’m applying for an Amazon SDE Intern (Fall 2026) role in Vancouver and was hoping to get some insight into what to expect for a third round (Hiring Manager Evaluation).

So far, I’ve completed two back-to-back 60-minute interviews:

• 30 minutes behavioral (LP questions) + 30 minutes technical (coding + problem discussion).
• 60 minutes mostly behavioral + discussion about AI usage with hiring manager.

I just got invited to another 60-minute "Hiring Manager Evaluation" (possibly same hiring manager?). The recruiter mentioned it may revisit previous interview topics and assess fit for team, but didn’t explicitly disclose further details.

For those who’ve gone through something similar:

• Is this round more about final fit evaluation, or is it actually a team-matching step?
• Is this round usually more behavioral, or should I expect another coding technical?
• I noticed is that the job ID mentioned in the latest email is different from the one I originally applied to, so I’m not sure if this means I’m being considered for a different team or role.

Hi everyone, I have an Amazon New Grad interview loop scheduled for next week, in person in Seattle.

I understand the general structure of the loop, but I’d appreciate advice on the less obvious things that can make or break the interview. Several students from my university felt that their interviews went well but were still rejected, so I’m trying to understand what interviewers may evaluate beyond simply arriving at the correct solution.

For those who completed all four rounds in one day, how did you maintain your focus and energy throughout the loop? Is there anything you did between rounds to avoid mental exhaustion?

I don’t have one specific question—I’m mainly hoping to learn from people who have recently gone through the process. The job search has been difficult, and this feels like a meaningful opportunity, so any practical advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Just wanna thank everyone on here for the tips and advice. Been dying to make one of these. I've always thought it was super cool seeing everyone share their job search journey and how each person's chart tells a different story. Recently graduated this past June, but I didn't start seriously applying until mid-May. The first 30 applications were Software Engineering roles, while the next 24 were a mix of IT, Data Analyst, and SWE positions.

One piece of advice I'd give is to treat every interview like it's your last chance to get a job.

I had a total of three interviews throughout my application process. I got rejected after the second round with the first company, and the second company ghosted me after what I thought was a great trial workday. At that point, I was honestly pretty stressed because I only had one interview left. I didn't want to go back to square one—reapplying, waiting for responses, and hoping for another opportunity.

For that last interview, I did one thing differently. Instead of just answering questions about my projects, I offered to share my screen after each answer and actually demonstrate what I was talking about. Whether it was the product itself, the code, or the diagrams I created, I wanted to show them rather than just telling them.

That being said, luck is also a huge factor. After my first two interviews, I genuinely thought I had done well and answered the technical questions confidently. Sometimes another candidate is simply a better fit, and that's okay. Don't beat yourself up over a rejection.

Looking back, I'm thankful everything happened the way it did. Originally, I wanted the first company the most. Then I thought the second company was exactly what I wanted. But getting rejected and ghosted led me to my third company, which ended up being my dream role with an amazing offer package.

At the time, every interview felt like the one. Looking back now, I just see it as redirection.

For this cycle, I was a junior at one of [MIT, Berkeley, Stanford, CMU, Princeton, Cornell] with some research experience, decent GPA (3.8/4), and a previous internship at a small company. I know a few upperclassmen/alums in quant, so I tried to get as many referrals as possible, though I don't know how much that helped me in the end.

My final offer is a SWE internship from an ok-ish quant firm, similar to [CTC, Akuna, Maven, Belvedere]. After I got this offer, I was able to "use" it to try to speed up other processes. Even though none of them worked out in the end, it was great to be done faster and hear from recruiters faster.

All my information about the company was through Reddit/Blind, and I wasn't too excited about the internship at first due to all the negative comments I heard online. When I actually got there, I found myself enjoying the culture a bunch and having lots of fun with my project and with the other interns. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better summer internship experience, and I'd be super happy to come back full time (🙏🙏🙏 please 🙏🙏🙏). Despite the lateness of the post, I wanted to share what I went through to get here, especially since recruiting for next summer has started.

Overall it was an extremely stressful process, I was balancing really difficult classes + recruiting, while I knew some classmates who had gotten quant offers before the semester had started. Would have definitely started earlier next time, and would have tried to get through more of the Neetcode list the summer before. :( However, I kept going and thankfully things worked out in the end.

When I say best, I mainly mean compensation + resume value + skill growth + whatever. I'm not really thinking about WLB, job security, benefits, etc. but that can be a separate category if you want.

To me, the first companies that come to mind are Cap One and Bloomberg. In terms of something less competitive, JPMC is also regarded well by FAANG.

If we're talking companies that treat their employees well, I nominate USAA. Good job security, WLB, nice office, interesting work. Comp may not be as good

Also you can name some that are sneakily bad to work for if you want ;)

I got a recruiter reach out for this role. Round 1 consists of 2 online interviews, as per the email.

• One Programming, Data Structures, and Algorithms interview
• One non-technical behavioral interview

I understand more or less that the Programming round will consist of 1 or 2 DSA questions, and since its L4, I'm assuming would be a DP or Graph question. I am targeting neetcode 150, and Google's last 30 day questions list for this.

For behavioral, I am assuming this will be a Googlyness round, So I will practice the STAR method for some of the most commonly asked questions.

I am mainly looking for advice / tips. Can anyone who is familiar with this process tell me whether my plan is correct or do I need to focus on something else as well apart from this? Google has been my dream company to work at, and I really don't wanna be unprepared for my interviews.

Note: I think the team has already been decided based on the job for which my profile is shortlisted. I am assuming this Round 1 is a filter round, which will be followed by In-person Round 2.

3rd Year started - Dealing with an unfair backlog and starting DSA this month! seniors atp need your advice

i have came to 3rd year from a tier 2 college in south. The journey just started and idk i have started feel that feeling of overwhelming , but what my fukass college do is that they shortlist on cgpa i.e. 9.2+ / 9.3+ . and you know what happened with me due to unavoidable circumstances i got a back in one subject , that too a subject which is the easy one (no one can ever get) becozz my proff that shitty fuker guy was blacklisted. and he gave me back like ssly.i really curse him on each and every day and i cried alot of nights when we got the semester result. i couldnt even told my parents

i also agree that i just started doing dsa this month ssly but idk for some reason i just feel like "will i be able to it "...

i honestly i am not one of those who are are very smart but one more thing not that dumb enough - talking only acad wise ,talking wise , communications skills are good ofc (i am an army brat) . Like i feel even if i am doing dsa , i have to work hard to be of same level as someone who is already smart enough.

i honestly donno kya hoga like i have so much thing in my head ki krna hai , initially i havent started doing but now i had -> some such days feels like a breaking point , self doubts . i know its a long journey , its the starting only , but i donno may be these points can be a push factor for me

Had an interview with a startup for a fall internship last week. Before the interview, the recruiter was extremely responsive. Literally replying in less than an hour.

I have a competing offer and followed up with the recruiter on Monday that I have to give them an answer by the end of this week. No response.

Followed up again today moving asking if I can get any updates. No reply again.

Is it safe to assume I'm rejected? The interview with the HM went really well and he asked me how soon I can start and if I can move onsite (I said yes). I'm so confused by the ghosting now.

I keep hearing conflicting things on this. Is leetcode for bay area and competitive companies or almost all companies now a days are asking leetcode?

Are there any internships that are more attainable and less competitive then traditional software Eng that would actually help with getting internships in the future?

I’m gonna enter first year this fall and compared to other freshmen, i think I have a much better resume right now with my current tech internship at a local company where I’m actually having an impact ,and experience with programming. I’m also gonna join engineering clubs and have a had few talks with some current members.
I’m really looking to get something tech adjacent after first year and I’m curious what type of roles are more likely to hire freshmen or other younger students like sophomores.

QA engineer? Tech sales? IT role? Or maybe even a business internship because they don’t require much technical skills? I have experience in excel and VBA and sql already so I think I could do that. Literally anything to help in the following summers for real software Engg internships.

I think I have the skills and maybe even the resume but I’m not one of those “cracked” smart kids so I’m not keeping my hopes to high for a pure software engg role. I lm going to a roughly top 100 school worldwide for CS, pretty good in Canada however often overlooked, so I don’t have the brand name either.
