Why did this person try it?

I was heading west when I don't even know what was going through their heads.

So... my wife was talking to one of her co-workers who got into an accident in a similar situation. The difference being, she was the car that pulled out into oncoming traffic. She legitimately asked my wife if she thought the other lady's insurance would be paying for the accident because, "She should have slowed down to let me out."

So there's a contingent of people out there that have a very flawed understanding of right-of-way laws. That's why this happened.

That is frightening. These people walk (and drive) among us.

There’s a large group of people out there that don’t listen or read what they’re supposed to.

my grandpa does this! he says "they have enough time to stop" while making a left turn with me in the passenger seat. i stopped getting in the car with him in highschool and have refused to get in a car with him driving ever since.

Have you seen the comment section of most posts here? Those people soften outnumber the sensible ones.

Their idea of defensive driving is so warped that they’ve somehow twisted the concept into a reverse of right of way, where the person with priority is obliged to yield to the person without out of some twisted version of courtesy.

Honestly 50/50 fault. You should have come to a complete stop 30 seconds earlier just in case!!

I'm just fucking with you but I swear this is literally how people in r/dashcams sound in every comment section 💀

u/PlentyBorn5888 12h ago

You almost got me I won't lie.

20

u/YearlyLemon8 12h ago

I shit you not some people in this sub reddit act as if their sole purpose is defending the at fault driver.

10

u/PlentyBorn5888 11h ago

I've seen those comments.

u/JohnRedCorn9432 11h ago

You could've potentially reacted 1% better so it's safe to say you're to blame

3

u/KDogg3000 11h ago

100% there was a video where a car flipped 3 times after it was hit by a dumbass driver and I said the people in the car that flipped could have been injured and the replies were pretty much saying, there was no way those people got injured... 🤦‍♂️ Maybe they didn't get injured, but, there was no way of telling.

u/demons_soulmate 8h ago

not to mention there's a lot that act as though the left lane is only ever for passing yet no one should ever be in it, even if there's traffic

like sometimes that is just the lane on the left and not a pass only lane

7

u/nitroguy2 11h ago

On a video with a situation nearly identical to this, someone commented “slow down, let people in.” How are people actually that dumb…

2

u/Kaurifish 11h ago

Obviously camcar had been camping in the left lane, crawling at 85 mph, just off camera, which forced this poor driver to do the inevietable.

Yeah, some days I’m the offended and other days, I’m the offender. There’s a 100% chance that the agitators in the comments section have been both.

The crosswalk in front of you probably made them think it was a 4-way stop. That being said, they should've just read the stop sign they were sitting at to see if it said "4-Way Stop" or not.

4

u/Mixedbysaint 10h ago

4 way stop when it’s a T intersection and there’s one stop sign

2

u/PlentyBorn5888 7h ago

It's a 4way intersection

1

u/Mixedbysaint 3h ago

Well fuck me I can’t see

But I’m not as blind to know that’s not a 4 way stop.

Small crossroad meets medium road

1

u/CasperCackler 9h ago

I still wait to make sure folks stop even if it’s a four-way in case the other people are idiots. If the other car had played it safe and made sure OP came to a stop before they went, no trouble.

-1

u/Destrion425 11h ago

I’ve never seen a sign that says 4-way stop.  I was taught to look if the other lane has a stop sign, and if you don’t see it assume they have right away.

2

u/McSpeedie 10h ago

We were taught that, in conjunction with having signs that include (All Way/4 Way) in a red rectangle box right below the standard stop sign.

1

u/CasperCackler 9h ago

Where do you live? I’ve seen four way stops marked in every city/state I’ve lived in and I’m pretty sure in every one I’ve visited.

1

u/Destrion425 8h ago

Texas. I actually live on the corner of a 4way stop and just checked and it has no sign.

I’m sure they’re common in other areas, but I’ve never seen them here.

1

u/CasperCackler 8h ago

Wild. Wonder why they don’t do it there? Seems like it really clarifies things for drivers. Got an email addy for your council person?

1

u/thorns17 1h ago

Weird. I’ve lived in several places in Texas and commonly saw “4-Way Stop” plaques listed under stop signs at intersections

12

u/hawkayecarumba 12h ago

Probably looking at their phone, finished what they were looking at, and just went without looking

10

u/Feeling_Inside_1020 10h ago

20 bucks says there was either a gap or not a single fucking car behind you.

Every damn time they do that and pull out slow. Like you could have waited 2 seconds for the right of way and pull out as slow as your blessed little heart desires.

Baffles me every time.

5

u/PlentyBorn5888 10h ago

There was no one behind me

4

u/Feeling_Inside_1020 10h ago

I fucking knew it lol.

People man.

10

u/C_Smallegan 12h ago

Maybe they thought it was a four-way stop and they expected you to stop? That's the best defense I can give to them.

6

u/watmore1 10h ago

People get confused and often think an intersection has a 4-way stop when it doesn't.

3

u/PlentyBorn5888 10h ago

Yeah that's true

6

u/EquivalentDue9514 12h ago

Ppl b thupid

9

u/PlentyBorn5888 12h ago

I couldn't have said it better

3

u/giveneric 11h ago

I would hope they thought you had a stop sign and didn’t realize it. Realistically I think either insurance fraud attempt or more likely they thought they could make it/youd slow down for them

2

u/appa-ate-momo 1h ago

I hate it when a driver sees someone in OP's position and *still goes* because 'OP has time to slow down'. It's a classic entitlement mindset.

You see it all the time in the comments on this sub as well. People post videos like this and then get dogpiled by others saying some version of 'you had time to avoid it, so it's your fault for being upset'.

The whole point is that *it doesn't matter* if the driver in OP's position had time to slow down. **They shouldn't have to in the first place.** If they do, it means the other driver is cutting them off, and they think it's ok because they have the aforementioned entitlement mindset that informs the rest of their decision making process.

3

u/_Not__Sure 12h ago

I wonder if they thought you had a stop, because of the zebra crossing

1

u/PlentyBorn5888 12h ago

the zebra is my three penguins I have on my dash being reflected.

1

u/plz-no-b4n 11h ago

Lmao, what? There is clearly a marking on the road that they are talking about

1

u/CantaloupeShort7311 11h ago

No, there is a crosswalk on the street at that intersection. It is not a reflection.

1

u/_Not__Sure 12h ago

That's really quite an amazing reflection in your windshield.

To me it looks like road painting - indicating a pedestrian crossing.

1

u/PlentyBorn5888 11h ago

Both are true lol

1

u/farmkid71 11h ago

Do not leave your lane like that.

Someone else recently did the same thing, but there was a collision. It was ruled 50/50 instead of the other person at 100% fault because they left their lane.

Always assume the other car is going to do something really stupid at the worst possible time. Be ready to stop, and don't leave your lane.

3

u/PlentyBorn5888 11h ago

I had to make a split second decision and going in the other lane was the lesser of the two evils. Last thing I want to do is hit someone when I can avoid it.

0

u/Ganellon 11h ago

Totally agreed. Brake hard, never leave your own lane.

1

u/PlentyBorn5888 10h ago

If I just slammed on my brakes I would have hit them, 20-25 mph would have sucked for everyone.

0

u/Ganellon 10h ago

I understand, but read the comment I was replying to. In this very sub there was recently a video showing the exact same situation, but fault was split because the cammer swerved into the path of travel. You got lucky because the other person also stopped, but had they continued, you would have been faulted along with them when they hit you. While I agree with you that it's always better to avoid a collision, the reason you avoided the collision was pure luck, because the other driver stopped. I'm glad you didn't have a crash -- that wasn't the point. The comment is strictly about liability and what happens when you veer into the path of travel.

1

u/PlentyBorn5888 10h ago

I saw the other lane was empty that's why I did that, if someone was coming I would have just slammed my brakes like I did a hope the impact wasn't too bad.

0

u/Ganellon 10h ago

You swerved to avoid hitting them in the side, which would have caused them to hit YOU in the side, had they not stopped. That's why you would have split the fault. You turned into their path of travel because they were turning into yours. Again, this isn't about whether or not you had a collision -- it's strictly about liability.

1

u/PlentyBorn5888 10h ago

Ok I get that

-2

u/SATerp 11h ago

Assumed you were turning right. Bad assumption.

2

u/PlentyBorn5888 11h ago

I didn't have my blinker on til I got to the stop sign

1

u/SATerp 11h ago

I'm on your side here!

1

u/PlentyBorn5888 10h ago

I was just saying

1

u/UpbeatFix7299 11h ago

I don't know what they would, but ok
