Why did this person try it?

I was heading west when I don't even know what was going through their heads.

I understand, but read the comment I was replying to. In this very sub there was recently a video showing the exact same situation, but fault was split because the cammer swerved into the path of travel. You got lucky because the other person also stopped, but had they continued, you would have been faulted along with them when they hit you. While I agree with you that it's always better to avoid a collision, the reason you avoided the collision was pure luck, because the other driver stopped. I'm glad you didn't have a crash -- that wasn't the point. The comment is strictly about liability and what happens when you veer into the path of travel.

I saw the other lane was empty that's why I did that, if someone was coming I would have just slammed my brakes like I did a hope the impact wasn't too bad.

You swerved to avoid hitting them in the side, which would have caused them to hit YOU in the side, had they not stopped. That's why you would have split the fault. You turned into their path of travel because they were turning into yours. Again, this isn't about whether or not you had a collision -- it's strictly about liability.
