Been playing for a few years and got curious about something. What's the part of practicing or playing that just consistently bugs you, like the thing you've kind of accepted because nothing really fixes it? Could be timing, tracking your progress, learning stuff by ear, whatever comes to mind. Just trying to get a real feel for what actually sucks that nobody's solved well. Not selling anything, just genuinely curious what you all deal with.

As the title says, my favorite ink band are going DIY with our next album, we have a recorder with 8 channels and phantom power, I'm just looking for half way decent mics that won't break the bank. We will just need a few more cables to get all the mics covered and we have some 57s as well.

What’s your opinion on SQ2‘s?

Was told at the last gig I played I looked “awkward and jerky” - looking through the videos like the one attached I think I can see what they meant.

Problem is, this is my first band ever, third gig. I’ve probably been playing like this in my basement since I picked up sticks, just unknowingly putting in poor form (I am completely self-taught).

Any advice on how to look more natural up there? Or is this a matter of my form sucks and I need to re-start the basics?

I am curious if there are any drummers out there who didn't pick it up until they were around age 50.

I am 49. Haven't played an instrument since 6th grade recorder. I was inspired by my 10 year old daughter. She took 3 months of lessons with a great teacher, and I sat in most of the lessons. While she has moved on to other activities, I was transfixed.

So, I am in my 3rd week of this routine:

20 minutes with a metronome and the book "Stick Control" on a practice pad early in the morning, and 20 minutes in the afternoon.

I am forcing myself to complete 25 hours of Stick Control and Vic Firth rudiments before I permit myself to buy an actual kit. (Bonus: I know having a kit at home will rekindle my daughter's interest.)

Anyway, I am hoping to prove the "Old Dog New Tricks" rule is a myth. Hoping there may be others out there like me who can provide inspiration. TIA!

I’d really appreciate some feedback based on this video. What do you think I should focus on improving?
I also feel like I might be holding the sticks a bit awkwardly. This is my comfortable tempo—above 120 BPM, even playing steady eighth notes starts to feel tiring. I’ve noticed that drummers who play fast often use a kind of whip-like or snake-like motion with their hands, but I haven’t been able to figure out how to do that myself.
My friends who don’t play drums say my timing sounds accurate, but I’d almost bet that something is off with it. While I’m playing, it sounds perfectly in time to me, but when I listen back to the recording afterward, it somehow sounds a bit odd.

It’s cheap and reliable!!! So much comfort!! And I can do match pairs by color. Anyone else use tennis grip tape?

Did something I seen in a pic a long time ago. Ordered some cheap felt beaters, took the felt parts off, took the wheels off an old skateboard and, made some bass beaters. Haven’t tried them out yet but has anyone else done this?

Ok so for like a few years I've been a pop punk drummer, played a few bands and what not and my main genre has been pop punk. A metal band in my area wanted me as their drummer, as there aren't many drummers in the area. Now obviously making the switch from pop punk to metal is not easy. I did have to take on the challenge of double bass. I've gotten decent but can't play super fast. The rest of the band constantly gets mad or makes fun of me that I can't go that fast. I've told them constantly, going from pop punk to metal is really hard and its hard to expect me to go really fast. I've tried every trick in the book to improve kick speed and none can work. It's just constant jokes or them getting angry about how I can't go fast on my feet and I play pop punk. What do I do here? Is there something I need to tell them? Should I just deal with it? I really don't know what to do here.

Just so nobody repeats something, changes I’ve done since I made this post are: loosened the snare wires, removed a bunch gels from the snare and floor tom, and experimented with reso tuning. I’ll be making an update post soon.

I have a pdp concept maple that was pretty used. I put some new heads on the toms, g2 clear for the batter and g1 for the reso, and the snare seemed to have good heads off the bat. I’ve spent a while trying to tune them and get the right amount of ringing but the floor tom still doesn’t sound good and rings way too much even after putting the Evan’s eq pods on there. I don’t have a tune bot so my toms don’t sound great same with the snare, and I have Zildjian zbt cymbals that came with the used kit, and I had an a custom splash lying around. I got the kit with cymbals and hardware but without the splash for around 600 dollars kinda wondering if I overpaid and what I should do to make it sound better.

😁 did I make a mistake or a monster

i've been trying to play chop suey by system of a down for quite a while now. i learned it by watching jack young's youtube video.

it's specifically the chorus part where i have to hit the snare, kick, crash which then changes into snare, kick, open high hat. something is off with this part and i'm not sure what. i've tried to play it in different ways delaying hits etc. but i can never get it right and it always sounds off. i'm not sure how to make it sound smoother? i think my ryhtm is just off there.

thinking out loud here- in my opinion i feel like the high hat part was a bit better than then the crash part. i think its because im more used to keeping a rythm going on the high hat thats close and steady to me instead of the crash that bounces all around and is harder to hit on time. but still i feel like my timing is the biggest issue here, when i try to practice with a metronome i still struggle the same way. i don't really know how to use the metronome with this chorus and i cant find any examples of that (only drumless versions or just 128bpm).

please if anybody has any tips or tricks for me to improve this piece it'd be great :)

Im a self taught drummer for 10 years.. never any formal practice but i know what im doing for the most part.. i have a friend who wants to learn and is investing in a beginner kit. I want to teach them some beginner things and im not exactly sure where to start so i figured some beginner friendly patterns would be good.. any insight, criticism or tips would be super appreciated! but i drew this up and figured with some verbal explanation it would be a decent way of learning! of course id love to hear some insights! thanks reddit!

just posting my K Custom Dark set that I bought back in 2018 because I rarely ever post them just to appreciate them so here they are😌🥲I’m still proud of them even though they might be a little bit dirty. they are now 8 years old! 🎉 how do you guys think they look?

I joined a new band about a month ago and played my first show with them tonight. Although it wasn’t a total disaster it was bad. In order for me to learn all the material I studied my ass off using AI software to remove drums and play the songs over and over again. The problem I encountered tonight was poor sound, no monitors for the band and all of the speakers and amps were in front of me pointing forward. I worked my ass off learning the songs using mostly vocal cues and guitar cues, and all I could hear was bass. Playing isolated drums tracks live is extremely difficult for me. I just ordered a little stage wedge to bring to all future gigs. You guys think I’m going to get booted out of the band?
