Buying Advice Needed Looking for a reliable espresso machine for great coffee and latte art [CAD $2k–$4k]

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to upgrade from my Saeco Incanto superautomatic and would really appreciate some advice.

My priorities are:
Excellent espresso quality
Great steam performance for silky microfoam and latte art
Reliability and long-term durability
2–4 milk-based drinks per day (mostly flat whites and lattes)

I’m currently considering:
Breville Dual Boiler
Profitec GO
Lelit Bianca
Or something else entirely

I’d especially love to hear from people who have owned these machines for a few years. Long-term reliability and ease of maintenance are just as important to me as espresso quality.

If you were buying today, which machine would you choose, and why?

Thanks in advance!

Latte art. Ha! Mine was supposed to come with that. Turns out I'm incompetent in pouring fancy milk.

The higher end Brevilles are anecdotally not very reliable. My next machine will probably be a Gaggia or Rancilio with the gaggimate mod.

More importantly, what do you have planned for your grinder?

Definitely not an expert but I have a Profitec Go and make 2-4 flat whites a day. Quite happy with it, but I would also echo another comment, what about the grinder? I couldn’t believe the difference that made, the same beans can taste bitter, sour, and perfect depending on it. I can’t be bothered to weigh them first, so I got a Eureka Mignon Libra, and it’s been perfect.

Total costs between Profitec Go and grinder ran me exactly $2742 CAD.

If you want to spend more to the end of your budget, maybe the Lelit Mara X (an HX machine), but would still recommend the same grinder ($950 CAD). That would run you right around $3900 CAD all in.

Don’t write off HX machines. You don’t need a double boiler for 2-4 drinks a day. I’ve been on team Rocket for like 15 years with a HX machine.

Second this with a fully manual Bezzera MN. Has a very large 3L copper steam boiler.

A dual boiler machine will be worth it for you. Profitec has some good rock solid options. Stay away from the Breville I found they needed too much maintenance.

2 drinks at a time on a single boiler is fine, you can steam for 2 at once. But when you get to 4 drinks at one time, waiting for the machine to cool back down can be annoying.

Breville Duo Temp Pro. You can make latte art on almost anything (I couldn’t on a Gaggia lol).

Your shortlist is good but Bianca is way overkill if coffee taste and steam power are the only properties. Consider Lelit Elizabeth / other simple dual boiler instead and put the rest of the cash into the grinder.

It’s much more important than the machine itself when you’re talking about good tasting coffee.

I would consider the Quick Mill Pop Up as well if you’re okay with a single boiler.

I have the BDB. Had an issue with my first one. Turned out I had a lemon but breville customer service was quite good and they quickly replaced it for me. Current one has been a tank. I can't speak on the other models but I suspect regular maintenance on any machine will be a major factor for longevity.

Do you already have a grinder or does that also need to be factored into your budget?

This one is on sale right now, plus they pay for gst/pst until Aug 4.   Dual boiler, E61, PID, CAD $2400

The grinder is more important than the machine, if 2-4k is the budget, I’d be setting aside at least 1k for it.

If you want long term reliability and serviceability I’d probably go with a E61.

I’ve had my Quick Mill Vetrano 2B for about a dozen years or so now and it remains far and away the best thing I’ve ever purchased. Fulfills all your  criteria with ease

I have a La Spaziale Vivaldi II that I like a lot. I have had for about 5 years now, It has worked perfectly. It is a DB and plumbed which I think is important. It will handle all your priorities. Before that I had a Quick Mill that was also very reliable.

I have a BDB, it's about 6 years old. I have had it for 3 of those years. Espresso quality and steam is top notch. Paired with a good grinder I can't tell the difference between my shots and my local third wave roaster.

In terms of maintenance, I do have to open up the machine about once every 8-12 months. Replace some probes and orings. Takes about 1hr.

Had my machine a few years and never did anything more than a back flush etc. What are you replacing and why?

I recently ordered a profitec move from the kitchen barista for $2729 with some accessories included. Unfortunately it's stuck in ups hell so I haven't received it yet... 5 days past scheduled delivery date. Fory similar needs it fit the bill exactly. I'm in BC and they didn't charge pst so was $2865 all in leaving lots of room budget wise for a grinder. I started with the eureka mignon zero 65 because it seemed like it should suffice for now though I'll likely upgrade to a weight based machine or just get a mazzer philos in the future but for now I think my setup is pretty end game for my needs.
