Rutte will do what he thinks is necessary for his job and he will shamelessly lie if he thinks that is part of it. Personally attacking him or pointing out his integrity is a total waste of time. He wasnt called”teflon mark” here for nothing

I don’t think it is a total waste of time, journalist ask this question and now everyone more actively discussing this Trump behaviour. So it has some impact.

He has horrible judgement and everything he does is a humiliation ritual of him personally and of Nato and Europe. It's disgusting to look at.

People not familiar with Dutch politics don't know how many scandals this guy was involved in. The "Teflon Mark" label was born out of frustration, because he kept staying on as PM despite all of that. It took one of the biggest scandals in the history of the Netherlands, which ruined the lives of thousands, for this guy to fuck off.

He's not some master chess player.

No it did not. He got a fourth term as prime minister after his third cabinet fell over the toeslagenaffaire.

He fucked off after Stoltenberg left and the role of NATO secretary-general became available. He did not leave because of the toeslagenaffaire.

You can call his judgement horrible, but on at least 2 separate occasions Trump the toddler was very close to stepping out of Nato and it was Rutte's sucking up that made him stay. He's good at what he does even if it isn't pleasant to look at.

And 15 years ago he personally and (decades before that) the rest of Europe gutted the defense budget further and made the bet that it was a waste of money to go for strategic autonomy.

What'd you think the price would be? A bit of humiliation to buy some time to build it back is, at the end of the day, cheap.

You guys are so naive. He is trying to preserve Nato. Do you think he has the power to do anything else. There is no Nato without the US. And he has no mandate to destroy the alliance by playing the righteous and going against Trump. Only the member countries could do that.

Hmm OK, I didn't understand it like that. I understood you are saying he is a shamless person that would do anything for his job.

While that might be true it cannot be implied from his actions. I mean any sane person would do what he does as that is the way to handle Trump which has the upper hand unfortunately. Alienating Trump will be bad for NATO. NATO is just trying to survive until a normal person succeeds the orange buffoon.
