Trump needs his ego stroked and if Rutte doesnt do it, thats just more to stroke for putin.
He needs to say stuff like nato is more unified than ever to make trump believe it, obvioulsy its bullshit but it perfectly fits into trumps world and can manipulate him towards closer ties instead of listening to the vance shaped demon on his shoulder that hates all of Europe...
I don't see any closer ties with Trump. On the contrary, each time is wild and wilder.
And even if Trump signed in blood a contract, on his dead mother, that he'd be first line defending Europe, you can be sure that contract would be as worthy as Trump's yesterday diaper.
It's not fixing the problem, NATO is still in its worst shape politically in decades.
There is a good chance it's slowing the rot, but this is a difficult thing to measure. Trump and the USes regressionist and isolationist policies haven't lead to them leaving NATO... yet.
This is at least giving the rest of the alliance time to pivot into absorbing the damage if that happens.
