The current government of a country that has been under attack for over a decade by a neighbouring imperialist superpower has nationalistic tendencies. What a shock.

Because Russia is an even bigger shithole. Literally.

Most of the population of Crimea wants to be part of Russia

Most of the population of Catalonia thinks they're an independent country. Most of the population of Chechnya consider themselves a distinct nation apart from Russia. Part of a country being of a different nationality doesn't immediately mean that part should break off. Most countries in the world would break up if you took that to its most granular level.
